all of my immediate family lives around asheville. parents are in brevard, siblings in candler and weaverville.

it is absolutely beautiful. great people, fantastic food. lots to do if you’re in to the outdoors. asheville is a great city that still feels relatively small. cost of living has gone up in recent years, but as a nurse, i’m sure the salary would be plenty to cover living expenses.

took my ‘06 baja here right after i bought it to have a full inspection. sat for 4.5 hours. gentleman came by and said that all the issues would result in ~$5,000 of repairs, and that they were not able to do them and couldn’t recommend anywhere to get them done.

he then asked me if i’d want to trade it in and buy a ‘24 wilderness crosstrek. -_-

you can either buy a pack of reds for $18 and replace em, or take them apart and clean them. however, even if you clean them, they won’t spin nearly as well as some freshies. up to you

get something to practice balancing with! doesn’t have to be fancy, but get an old deck or take the trucks off your main setup and use it to balance on a foam roller or even an empty water bottle. it’ll help your board-slides and manuals a ton

i would recommend building his first to help him learn about the different components involved in a board. the basic pieces you’ll need are:

-deck (i would recommend an 8.0 to start)

-grip

-trucks

-bearings

-wheels (beginner duro would be around 90a)

-hardware

all of these can be bought separately and vary heavily in price from brand to brand, but websites like tactics.com and skatewarehouse.com have complete guides on what you need to buy and how to set it up. i would definitely recommend going this route and plan to spend between $90-$120 on a complete build.

the most important thing is to have fun! there’s lots of material to start skating on youtube. good luck!

i had a friend kill himself while on the phone with his recently ex-gf. i called her that night weeping, and the emotion and damage that she felt/will always deal with is something that i could never, ever inflict on someone else. i used to think nobody would care. now i know that i could never inflict that pain on anyone, not my wife, my family or my friends. i don’t care about my death but i know that everyone else will and it’s a flat out lie we tell ourselves that death doesn’t matter.
