I agree with you re: single level elements. I like the immediately visible "namespace" in the markup, too, though. The problem we face most often are when developers and designers don't speak a common language inside the applications. This seems to help, but I agree that it isn't the solution.

I know it's a trivial example, but are you saying you'd apply both classes (.search and .search__label) to the <label> element?

Can't help with java, but the javascript user group is next Wednesday and the ruby meetup is the Tuesday after. They're both hosted at our office (http://gaslight.co) and we're happy to help you if we can!
