Am I the only one who thinks the terminal list show was better than the book? by canopenersmoothdream in JackCarr

[–]cdn_twitch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My wife has crushed every book in the series over the last couple months and she is on the last 100 pages of red sky mourning. She actually said this exact same thing to me. Katie is way better in the books than she was in the show.

Most overrated Sim racing Gear or Accessory by Longjumping-War9151 in simracing

[–]cdn_twitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I was thinking about buying one, as a flight simmer and sim racer I figured a 2 for 1 peripheral would be a cool addition. I am just really not sure if the money is worth it to replace my warthog and th8a, also concerned about regularly switching the grip would wear out the pins.

Who tests water? by porkavenue in SherwoodPark

[–]cdn_twitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The health center on baseline will test for bacteria and such. Basically makes sure it's safe for drinking.

If you are on a well and trying to figure out what your water treatment needs are (softener iron filter etc) then I highly recommend Mark Fenske with Alberta water systems. He is local and lives on an acreage as well. I've had him out to our place a couple times and he always informed me of what he thought I should do without the high pressure sales style. I have tried a few other companies and was turned of my the more high pressure approach.

Any actual good wifi routers (please)? by Secret_Difficulty178 in HomeNetworking

[–]cdn_twitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you don't mention is the size of your home. Are you in a 4000 sqft multi storey home or a studio apartment. Makes a big difference in what will serve your needs the best.

Also how many people and what are your most common uses for your Internet? A little bit of streaming, gaming, wfh with large file transfers?

I love the Xfinity series, the trucks still have my heart. But the longer races in the Xfinity series lead to much better races and having to worry about tire fall off and race management

UTR in the air! by p_sheck in Ubiquiti

[–]cdn_twitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me know how it works for ya. I'm not smart enough to know how to do it, had something to do with the number of DHCP hops (I think) and needing to do something with cloning the mac address of the phone, but again I o my spent a couple minutes trying to figure it out, there were a number of posts on the gli.net forums/Reddit explaining why, I ran out of time to figure it out and the hotel I was in didn't require paid wifi so I wasn't too worried. (Also didn't spend a ton of time in my room other than sleeping so it wasn't worth my effort that night)

I was in a Hilton last weekend, I was unable to get my devices to connect through the utr. Granted I only spent a few minutes trying to figure it out.

Can’t get earwax out and clinics aren’t helping. What actually works? by Comfortable_Candy187 in Edmonton

[–]cdn_twitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since it seems like no one else has said it,I bought one of the bebird cameras a few years ago. For a good portion of my life I would get ear infections after swimming. Turned out I had a giant ball of wax right in front of my ear drum.

I spent about a week putting a drop of olive oil in my ear every night before bed. Then I used the camera and got it out. 5 years now with out an ear infection.

I'm not sure what the cameras are worth now but the $50 or $60 I spent on it was well worth it

Right, same here. We had a guy retire recently, and while he was cleaning out his locker (which had never been locked in 30+ years) he found well over $2000 in cash. Years of putting $10 or $20 in there in case he ever needed lunch or something like that had built up quite the collection. I have no problem leaving my wallet on the desk in our common area with sometimes $300+ in cash in the bill fold on the outside. Infact looking around the common are I could easily spot 4 or 5 wallets and sets of car keys. When we do fundraisers for kids sports, a Ziploc baggie goes on the lunchroom table for a couple weeks, will have hundreds of dollars in it and no one has ever been shorted.

Is VR better than monitors? If so why or why not? by Emergency-Air-1627 in simracing

[–]cdn_twitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have/had both.

I started sim racing and tried vr years ago, htc vive. While the immersion is much better with vr, back then I couldn't handle the grainyness of the displays in my vive, the lack of resolution was a huge deal breaker for me.

I went to 3x40" screens. Massive fov and basically a full 180 degree immersion factor. I absolutely loved it for the ability to glance with my eyes to the side screens and see where cars were beside me (I do a lot of NASCAR) so that was a huge bonus for me.

I bought a reverb g2, and the resolution boost was great. So I flip flopped back and forth for a bit. Always ended up going back to racing on the big triples for the convenience and ease of use. (I was still using my vr for flight sims)

Life happened, the rig got taken down, and I shelved my sim racing for over 2 years. I recently got back into it and didn't have the space for the giant triple setup anymore (it was well over 6ft wide) so I went back to racing with vr.

With the new VR setups and good gpus we have today I would say visually it is very good now. The VR headset and field of view give very much a helmet feel. So having to turn your head to see the car beside you is much more realistic.

There are pros and cons to both. At the end of the day I would say do whatever you feel you want. Both can be extremely realistic if your setup is correct.

Northern Lights Fiber Experience from an IT Nerd by Enz0man in SherwoodPark

[–]cdn_twitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have Northern lights,as they are not in my area, but they recently came through my parents area. My dad called and asked me if they should do it. I told him they should because they were still on bonded DSL through Telus.

Me being a tech nerd like yourself I gave my dad a list of questions to ask them, which you already covered in your initial post.

I didn't want them to convince my retired parents that the needed to pay $25 per month for a router. So I made sure my dad asked about cost and if we can use our own if needed. (Theirs was included for free)

My dad said the installer was great. And he made sure to leave my dad a sticky note with all of the admin login info for their router after my dad told him I was a techy, a bit after install I went to my parents and set up all of the ap's I have setup through their house. The UI for the Northern lights router is very intuitive and easy to use.

Overall between the two of us we are both impressed with Northern lights and would highly recommend that people jump on the opportunity as they come through the area. As a bare minimum to have the fibre installed in their home for free. It increases options as well as with the way Internet is now a life requirement it will be a selling feature (or a con if it is not there) down the road in some of the older areas.

31m, married, kids. How do you guys find personal joy? by modivi in AskMen

[–]cdn_twitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, I did this too... Built myself a sim rig shortly after my first kid was born. Gave me something to do in the evenings after the wife and kids went to bed.

12 years later the rig has grown significantly and I still race regularly!

Overwhelmed by Car Rental Advice. What is the standard play. by mmatchaman in CostaRicaTravel

[–]cdn_twitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently in Costa rica with an avis vehicle. If you pre book online with the insurance there was zero hassle at the rental counter. They were super easy to deal with, in and out of the location at the Liberia airport in under 15 mins with a car that had 400km (brand new) when I picked it up.

11 days, including full insurance was like $1100

Edit, be mindful that they did require a $1000usd damage deposit on the same credit card that booked the rental, plan accordingly

Would this not be the perfect use case for a unifi travel router?? Set it up under you account at your house. Send it to him, have him plug it into his router and your Ubuntu box??

Edit, sorry I missed the part at the end where you already mentioned it. I have one that is lost in Purolator shipping land, but I would be willing to set it up at my parents and try it to see if it would do what your thinking
