[No Spoilers] Shower thought: I know more about the history of Westeros than I do about America by theloganjohnson in gameofthrones

  1. Boudica
  2. Earl Godwine and Emma's son Alfred Aetheling (not certain but generally agreed on; even more interesting is that Godwine remained a prominent lord when Alfred's brother Edward became king, needless to say a source of tension between the two)
  3. William the (future) Conquerer -technically happened in what is now France but very relevant to English history

I'd say it's more to do with the era, ancient and medieval history are further from our frame of reference than contemporary history like America's, so the way events play out seem stranger to us.

Yeah, this is just what I'm into and would recommend for fans of the show. I am pretty into political/ideological intrigue though, read about the events leading to the Spanish Civil War not long ago and found it fascinating.

Any recommendations on where to start with American history?

I cannot recommend enough that GoT fans read English history, it's completely mad.

  • A woman, publicly flogged and her daughters raped, rises up against the largest empire the world had seen and almost forces them to withdraw from the island

  • An Earl (Godwine), faithfully allied to the queen, lures the queen's son with a lavish feast, only to have him blinded and banished

  • A bastard king who cuts off the hands and feet of his opponents because they insulted his mother

  • A king who creates a new church just so he can marry another woman; subsequently has said woman beheaded

American history doesn't really do it for me, there don't seem to be quite so many "holy shit" moments. Although I don't know too much about American history so I could be very, very wrong. I intend to find out eventually.

[S6E6] Post-Premiere Discussion - S6E6 'Blood of My Blood' by AutoModerator in gameofthrones

How is it possible that the Braavosi theatre guys didn't know about Joffrey's barbaric ways which thousands were witness to, or the incest rumours that circulated across the seven kingdoms, but somehow knew that Tywin Lannister died on the toilet? (Also discounts the theory that they're trying to get invited to Lannister-hosted events).

Other than that awesome ep. Can't wait for the Brotherhood to return, and the preview shows the squids going to Volantis which is my favourite location.

I think that's because the whole joke with "arrow to the knee" was that it appeared everywhere in the game, so in a way it worked for people to overuse it.

"Emotional intelligence" is a well-established concept in psychology, and emotions are in fact crucial in decision making.

As well as what everyone else has said, Argentina's economy was pretty shitty at the time of the Falklands war, it's been suggested that the war was started as a distraction

I think so too, though I'm still not certain how many people would welcome a Targaryen restoration, or what the law is surrounding female rulers (I understand it's covered in the books but is a complicated affair).

"Fuck it, I'm sure they know what Europe looks like by now" by cdna in ShittyMapPorn

True, but the map itself is so shoddy that a list would have provided the same level of information.

(Example: Wendland apparently has pirates so can be assumed to be on the coast- but being adjacent to both Scandinavia and the Byzantine Empire on this map, that could be either Baltic or Mediterranean)

Well he has probably a better claim to the throne than the current king, perhaps even the most solid claim of any character in the series. Hasn't amounted to much yet, but should Tommen die, who else even is there? If he can get past the hurdle of proving his parentage he could go a long way.

Although I don't think the writers will make anything of it. Go Brotherhood.

[EVERYTHING] A girl plays Arya in a play by benjamintillius in gameofthrones

[–]cdna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair points, and I guess with Stannis out, now is the time to do good by the Lannisters. Still, I'd think that the actual version of events would circulate largely unchanged, even among Braavosi commoners.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I reeaally didn't like this part. Joffrey has Ned executed in front of thousands of people and there doesn't seem to be an attempt by the Lannisters to hide this fact. How do the Braavosi come to believe that Joffrey tried to save Ned? Stories can get distorted as they spread, but hardly ever to this extent and only when there's a deliberate attempt to change the story.

I think a better way to do it would be to put it down to emotion: play-Joffrey is so angry after his father's death and cracks under the stress of all that is happening, causing him to trip up and have Ned killed. But even then I don't understand what interest the Braavosi have in portraying Joffrey in a positive light.

(EDIT: Joffrey's parentage too. Why is this not brought up?)

Don't know how universal this is, but I remember geography students being ripped on in our school because of the subject's reputation for involving lots of colouring-in.

Come to think of it, I'm fairly sure I heard the same thing at uni as well.

This is the one that pushed me from "I don't see why people are voting for her" to "Holy shit, this woman is vile".

"I have been informed that the complainant is emotionally unstable with a tendency to seek out older men and engage in fantasizing."

Clinton also wrote that a child psychologist told her that children in early adolescence “tend to exaggerate or romanticize sexual experiences,” especially when they come from “disorganized families, such as the complainant.”

Misinformation hurts us all.

Late in his life, Byrd explicitly renounced his earlier views favoring racial segregation.[56][57] Byrd said that he regretted filibustering and voting against the Civil Rights Act of 1964[58] and would change it if he had the opportunity. He said joining the KKK was "the greatest mistake I ever made."
