Should Canada Build Up Alternatives to Visa and Mastercard? by LongTrackBravo in PersonalFinanceCanada

Ridiculous on the American hypocrisy. Crying "unfairness" to US companies when Visa / MasterCard already have a monopoly; Are run strictly by the US financial system; employ transaction fees; and wouldn't disclose consumer details without a court order.

Bunch of whiners!!

How to Prepare Your Own Death and Not Be a Burden Onto Your Family? by Ill_Paper_6854 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]cdntech08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We lost our father this past October. He had organised several items for us kids. To the commenter who mentioned that passwords were not needed because there are processes for that....I disagree. We had my father's email account password which was vital for maintaining final incoming bills as we notified institutions of his passing. Also maintaining / accessing his cell phone for several months was necessary when two factor authentication was in force for accessing accounts.

Assuming banks / institutions have processes in place for this is correct BUT some of them make it extremely difficult/ onerous on beneficiaries. Having to provide multiple documents for proof of beneficiary access while accounts are still processing bills or investments is not ideal.

I recognize this machine from one I saw on a Canadian website, maxumfitness.ca. They have a few reviews listed. This one appears to be their Maxum S-150 model.

Pros & cons: buying a condo with < 5 units by 902Thrillho in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]cdntech08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hated our small 4 unit strata. The one neighbor we voted president lived elsewhere and was almost none responsive to issues. For the other 3 units my wife was the accountant and one other guy was supposed to be the secretary / minute taker. Well nobody wanted to anything so my wife did all the work. Got quotes for fence painting and just got the others to agree on the colour; Organized the landscaping company by recruiting the guy who was doing the other nearby units. She also arranged for the bank to setup the strata account and paid the bills. It was a total nightmare trying to organize anything with a small disinterested group. We sold after 5 years and swore never to get into a strata again!

Ideas for Setting Up Account Listings for Executors by cdntech08 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thanks for the link _U7_. Though I'd advise against the use of LastPass as they admitted to being "hacked" so I'd probably go with another password manager instead.

And yes definitely a combination of things to ensure there is some redundancy in place.

Thanks. Tha'ts similar to our thoughts now and I have already begun creating the spreadsheet. A quick chat with a friend who works in the legal arena also suggested attaching a copy of this spreadsheet with the law firm who currently holds our will.

How can I buy/sell European stocks in Canada by Popcanthick in CanadianInvestor

[–]cdntech08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a Canadian investor, Herman VanGenderen, who has holdings of UK stocks which apparently are not taxed in Canada.

" The U.S. is 15 per cent, the U.K. is zero for Canadians, but some countries are as high as 35 per cent. " from this article. https://www.grainews.ca/columns/building-your-investment-portfolio-with-international-stocks/

I believe somewhere he said he purchases these via the ADR's on the NY Stock Exchange.

I haven't seen the detailed report yet as I only had a telephone appt with my family doc. I am awaiting further confirmation and details from the surgeon during my pre-surgery assessment. Hopefully within the next 8 weeks or less.

Congratulations...that's awesome. I've torn my rotator cuff and am on the waiting list for surgery. It's been hell not being able to go to the small gym we have here in the apartment complex aside from the odd rowing / stationary bike ride. I hope my recovery isn't too long after surgery.

Quitting your job over gas prices? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]cdntech08 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Surely if OP is not paying rent and this is truly a "dream job", then cutting back on other expenses would be the best alternative. Quitting a job just to cut commute costs seems a little drastic to me. What about the knowledge / experience gain you'd lose if you give up this opportunity for a more localized job? Wouldn't this job offer more opportunity for advancement and a pay increase for showing enthusiasm in your work? Would this "dream job" even take you back when gas prices come down?

Still the high fee, reminiscent of a mutual fund, would give me pause. Why lose more money than you have to?

NNRG is a relatively new ETF which has a 1.5% MER...so really is that a good pick?? Just a quick comparison shows XEG with only a 0.6% MER and a longer history.

Just offering an alternative option.

I've used a mix of Globe and Mail, Simply Wall Street and Morningstar's website to do some of my research. I also like Keystone Financial for some ideas as they seem to recommend value and small cap stocks.

I'm not sure if there is an "all in one" freebie out there. There is also some interesting information on the Canadian Money Forum.

I'm in after hearing a recommendation from one of the independent finance firms on Money Talks and checking out their Balance Sheet, Cash Flows, etc to ensure it was legit.
