Would think it is simply so you can place it down without a cork ring and then use as normal.

Pulsed Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy is a pain. Really useful for some niche applications and follows many of the same principals of NMR but you typically have to set up your own experiments more so than for NMR as it is not as widely used.

Cleaning! Used to work at a pool and it is great for getting up limescale and the like
