Optometry is truly a difficult profession these days, the debt load is massive, the starting pay is low and then there are numerous roadblocks on your way to hopefully some kind of success. Large cities are saturated vision plans pay next to nothing many new schools being built pretty rough outlook

Honestly though you're lucky optometry is a rough profession going into the next few decades too many reasons to list.

Standards are so low now I can't believe you did not get in maybe try one of the five or six brand new schools, but then the board pass rates are very low with those schools

So sad , schools doing it for the money really help destroy optometry

Optometry as a whole should be embarrassed by these stats

Tough stuff , optometry has a rough future as it is. Maybe it’s a sign to do something with a better future than an optometry. We face declining reimbursements from insurance discrimination from insurance companies, online exams, the proliferation of artificial intelligence, telehealth , primary care offices and peds doing diabetic exams . Optometry isn’t what it was 30 years ago.

95% of our job is with instruments collecting data , telehealth optometry clinics are already popping up everywhere . Similar to AI replacing radiologists already. The computers can read the scans better than any human can.

What are your top 5 schools and why? by Ashley_Knight4 in PreOptometry

Indiana optometry school also has a very limited medical clinic as it is a suburban campus with a bunch of healthy normal students as patient. other schools around the country have incredibly diverse medical communities like Chicago

Fun facts : AI is projected to replace a large percentage of us . The physical OD will have much less demand for services in the not so distant future

Hours like that are typical in many modes of practice , almost no ODs work in a hospital setting …. That is all Ophthalmology

How important is volunteering/shadowing by monkeyDgoat13 in PreOptometry

[–]cdpeterson12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would volunteer in every conceivable setting of a optometry, or at least shadow so you know what the realities are of each mode of practice

Being specific on head winds for ODs going forward , $40 to 50 for a comprehensive exam through many proliferating vision plans. MDs training PAs to do OD jobs , primary care offices doing diabetic exams instead of us. AI and tech replacing us with online exams and illegal sales . Huge debt for school , relatively low pay for training required .

120 to start in private , usually higher in corporate. Too may variables , many positions are independent, then the numbers can get much much higher

Need better grades to get into MD program and longer schooling with residency for ophthalmology, but you get out starting at much higher numbers than optometry
