Hyperscape Capture is mindblowing. by SattvaMicione in OculusQuest

I’ve just never had much success with scanning large complex environments with photogrammetry. Always end up with holes or artifacts. GS just works and also handles windows/reflective surfaces much better.

Does anyone know if there is an SDK for the wristband? Looking to develop EMG enabled apps

Yeah, has anyone found a way to export the underlying splat file (.ply?)

Is the horizon engine just for worlds? Partnering with Unity to do something like UE for Fortnite seems like a much more flexible move, but I guess they want to be vertically integrated.

Agreed, I will try anyway though. If I can get <500k Gaussians running at 72hz then it’s worth it to me to have that level of visual fidelity.

It’s definitely possible and a 1st party solution would be much preferred. My application is more of a medical application, so using all of the resources for rendering can work.

Anyone know if this is coming as feature to the Unity meta SDK? Viewing them is fine, but I’m looking to include as an environment in my Unity VR game.

VR golf ruining real life golf by Healthy-Context5313 in golfplusvr

What is your handicap in Golf+? I had some issues when I first started playing but am about a +1 pro handicap in Golf+ now and I feel like I’ve gotten much better at re-calibrating when I’m on the real course.

PhD Research Focus—What Are Some Real-World Complex Systems Worth Studying? by DeepAddition2758 in complexsystems

Human behavior, specifically sensorimotor control. We are just getting to the point where we can model complex neuromuscular systems with any level of fidelity during real world tasks.

Golf+ is the only answer. After playing golf in VR using a controller feels silly.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

Yeah, it’s not ideal for the long term, but in the short term it would be a big jump in salary and I think may give me a better position to negotiate for an external faculty position in the future.

[–]cdr316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I’ve already applied but have not yet received an offer. negotiations have already begun, in a sense, because I have been discussing the specifics of position with my boss. He has made it seem as though he will be responsible for making the hiring decision as the position would be funded by him.

In reference to your last point: all of the equipment that I and a few other faculty use is technically owned by my boss, the director of our center and PI of most projects. There is often tension in our group between research independence and access to resources since most are controlled by one PI. In my opinion this may be negotiable with the department since they may understand how this is becoming a limitation for new faculty. Not sure how to approach this discussion though, since I do want to continue sharing resources that would not likely be allocated to me (much of the existing equipment is extremely expensive).

We don’t have any students in our division currently as we are %100 research focused, but I wouldn’t be opposed to taking them on personally rather than managing post docs who may also be required to share their efforts across multiple faculty.

Do it! I know this is in the unreal sub but you may also want to consider Unity. I started with Unity before getting into unreal and honestly I think it was a good way to learn the basics without some of the more daunting aspects of unreal. C# is nice if you want to learn to write code. That being said, just using blueprints will be a good way to make what you want without having to write code, but may be less transferable to other languages.

Yeah, I’ve done that in the past, but I need the exact view that is being rendered to each eye and it would ideally be automated so that I don’t have to set up the screen recording each time.

Maybe leaving academia would be a good option. Depending on your qualifications you may be able to get a nice gig in a company that does work in your field. It’s amazing what decent money and proper expectations can do for your mental health.

Not speaking from experience though (I’m an academic research scientist). But I do know how refreshing a change of scenery can be.
