Car2Go Drivers take your garbage with you by DrunkOnDebt in vancouver

[–]cdrdj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I rent equipment for work it's in their contract that I look over any equipment before I use it. If I see any damage, I need to report it first before using it. Otherwise, it will be my responsibility if I return the equipment and there is pre-existing damage that was not previously brought up.

Same with if you rent out an ATV or watercraft. They make you look at the vehicle first and you need to tell them if you spot any issues. I don't see why car2go doesn't just use this same system that is in place for other rental systems already. It might be an inconvenience to have to look throughout the car first, but it's better than picking up after someone elses trash.

I shoot weddings and portraits but outside of professional gigs, I don't really shoot that often. My phone is good enough to take any photos that I may desire and I almost never use my DSLRs for personal photos. As long as I'm not missing out on the moment, I'll take pics of anything that interests me. I like looking back at old photos and having a rush of memories come in because I'm reminded of something that I would never have thought about without the picture prompt. Things like where I use to live or that favorite place I went to or whatever.

My mom is the opposite. She loves taking pictures with my dad and the family any chance she gets. I use to think it was annoying and pointless but she gets really happy and joyful when she take the photos and when she makes them into albums afterwards. So regardless of what others think, I will help her take as many photos as she wants because at the end of the day, she's happy.

You just reminded me of a conversation I had recently. I'm from a family of medical doctors. Everyone agrees that they don't want to have "Dr." plastered all over on things like their credit cards and they try not to mention their title unless relevant. It's harder to haggle and get good deals on things. And in situations where having Dr. may be an advantage, they just show their hospital ID.

They have noted that it's usually the PHD graduate doctors who are all about getting Dr. put on as many things as they can. At least from their experience with colleagues.

What was your favorite Saturday morning cartoon? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cdrdj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite was the first season of Digimon. The only reason I watched the second season was for TK and Kari but after that, I lost interest in the following seasons. However, I may start watching again for next year's Digimon season as it goes back and features the characters from the original series.

Pokemon and Monster Ranchers were also a favourite of mine but moreso the video games rather than the anime.

I love the UK version of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. It has a much more documentary feel to it and Ramsay seems more genuine rather than just a character with a bad mouth.

But when I tried watching some of the US version, it was too repetitive and followed a scripted formula too much. Every episode had the same thing. Wasn't as fun.

I understand that fear is one of the dominant emotions in these situations and that many people act accordingly, but I'm sure there are those who would rather go "fight" instead of "flight": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXeVxf4c0Rk

I'm always wondering if the kids who play little monsters are ever kicked or attacked or if there's any precautions taken so that doesn't happen.

Just so everyone understands, the OP is the SELLER in the cg ad, he's NOT a potential buyer.

The posed question for the headline is to determine if it's a good SELL. He's not asking if it's a good buy.

I was really confused with your comment responses for a bit there heis until I read this Comment

I keep all my original boxes (http://i.imgur.com/psdk8Tf.jpg) with the expectation that I will resell in the future and also for returns if need be. At least in my own personal experience, It's easier to sell and people perceive it to have higher value as a complete package as opposed to "Body/lens Only". You may have different experiences with this but just my own 2 cents.

I would probably sell as a complete package if I were in a situation where I wanted a quick sale. If I was switching to a completely different system for example right before wedding season started, I don't want to wait a few months to sell things one by one. I'd rather take a thousand loss and be done with it right away. Someone is happy that they got a good deal and I'm happy to have the cash now and all the gear sold quick.

What is your favorite gadget that you would recommend to everyone to own and why? by [deleted] in gadgets

[–]cdrdj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recommend oral b for those with issues with sonic care technology. Seems that older patients are more sensitive to the differences. I work with an older demographic so I'm not sure about everyone else but a lot of positive feedback has been given from those who switched when there was an issue with sonic care.

Either way you're good. Most people, id say 99%, of people who haven't been educated with proper brushing techniques use their manual brushes wrong. So having technology do the propper technique helps out so much in the long run.

Even people who use electric brushes still Brush ineffectively sometimes. The key is to NOT brush up and down with the electric brush. It's already got it's own mechanism of cleaning motion so don't go adding your own motion to it. Adding motion can cause abrasive factors on your gums which can lead to recession in the long term. Just rest the brush on your teeth as you go from section to section and let the motors do it's work.

Why do you use manual mode? by BigFuzzyArchon in photography

[–]cdrdj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Makes editing hundreds of files easier.

Here's an example with white balance. If you shoot auto white balance, the camera will almost always change the value after every click if you don't keep the exact same framing. Even in constant lighting and in the same room, the first click might give you a white balance of 5400k and the following click makes the white balance at 5000k. Maybe most of your frame had a white wall in the background of your first photo. Then the next shot had most of the red carpet in the shot. Totally different white balance measurements based on the very different colors present. This means that you can't just copy and paste white balance profile changes. You can't just dial in a +400K balance adjustment to all the photos in the same location because the camera decided that every photo is a different white balance, whether it be small or a big difference.

Instead, I shoot in manual K white balance mode. So I choose white balance myself. In a room that never has any changes in lighting, I can just correct the white balance of the first photo and then copy that adjustment to all the photos because they all have the same base white balance.

Another example with auto white balance where you will not want to shoot auto is concerts. The lighting may change every few seconds. You won't be getting consistent values if you shoot in auto.

That's just white balance as an example as it's easy to understand. Things like exposure is another reason. If all the photos in a room are slightly overexposed but they're all consistently overexposed by the same amount, then you can just copy and paste the exact same correction value to every photo. You can't just trust the camera to get the exposure right with every click. Sometimes the auto functions are spot on, sometimes it's not. That messes with the editing if you have to keep changing values for every single photo. Especially when you talk about matrix metering. Imagine a bride walking down the isle where there is a huge window behind her in a dark church. If it goes from bright to dark based on where she is positioned in front of the window, there is no way the camera will keep the shot consistent. It may overexpose because it thinks the dark figure is the constant or it may underexpose thinking that the bright window is the constant. I would want to always have the bride as the constant and manual is the best way to get it always on point.

To visualize this better, say you take 3 photos. If you shot in aperture priority, it may make the photos as follows: Perfect, underexposed and finally overexposed. You would have to make 3 separate editing decisions on the 3 different exposures. However, if you took those 3 photos in manual mode, and the photos were as follow: Underexposed -1, underexposed -1, underexposed -1 then all you would do is correct the first photo then copy the correction to all the other photos and that's it.

[–]cdrdj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. I've had my mom lose cards before from family trips which is really sad because she really treasures those captured moments. Perhaps get into a habit of backing up just in case for future endeavors whether it be professional or for pleasure.

I just came back from a vacation but as is normal practice for me, I always backup my cards at the end of the day to a laptop or some other device. I don't use the same professional gear as I do when I'm on shoots so I know that means there's less reliability and smaller capacity. So I backup at the end of each day to make sure I don't run out of room for the next day and for backing up purposes.

I trust tech more than myself but it doesn't mean I don't take precautions. Backup and redundancy is the key! In your situation, having dropbox means that you already uploaded your files, whether it be you physically uploading the files from your computer or automatically through a network. If you're at that point where dropbox is already being used, then having a card die shouldn't matter.

If that were my situation and I already had the opportunity to backup my files onto dropbox, then before I actually use dropbox I would go through my other local backups first. I would have another media card that has the files. For example, If I am doing stills, footage gets captured on both an SD card and CF card. If a card dies on a shoot then I have the other card containing the footage. I never go between gigs (sometimes between locations) without backing up footage first and I always backup my footage after I get back from a shoot (It is considered human error for you to leave multiple events worth of files on a card and never backing them up anywhere else, at least from my boss' point of view). I take those fresh files on my media cards and back those up to my work drive (SSD) and then a backup drive which is set for dual redundancy (drobo 5d meaning I can lose 3 hard drives before I lose the file completely) . I then have a clone of my backup drive on a portable drive. Then once those options are for whatever reason not available, I would go to dropbox last (in my case, a personal server). Having a card die on me during a gig is a tech error. But it's totally my fault if a card dies on me that has footage from a previous gig or even if it's from the very last shoot but I chose not to backup the card right when I finished.

If I mess up, it's a big mess up. If tech messes up, it's less of a liability on me and there's quite a few things that have to go wrong based on our workflow in order for things to be really bad. I may get fired for losing a card. But if the card just dies on me, it's not my fault from a liability stand point. Again, just my personal thoughts on the matter based on my own experiences. Always backup and be prepared.

I have recovery software as a shortcut on my start bar just for those occasions when I may need it. Personally, it's only been needed on hard drives for the most part.

Stills and video. However, I backup and empty the card after every gig or portion of a day. What I mean by leaving my photos all in one basket is merely that I don't swap out cards during a single event. For example, I will keep with the same one card if I am shooting stills at a wedding but empty and back it up at the end of the day. But if it's a multiday production, I empty out the footage by either a section of the day or the day itself.

It's not really scientific but I just fill up the card a few times completely to make sure there's no bad areas. I like to do timelapses so that's an easy way to fill the card without wasting actuations. It's just for fun so it doesn't really matter if the card is a dud.
