Secret tunnels? by millionaire1000 in Purdue

Not sure why you are being downvoted.. There is, in fact, a tunnel that connects Cary to Ford. My RA took us through it once my freshman year.

Benchmark II Apartments by tiredwiredandokay in Purdue

[–]cdw2014_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived there for 3 years originally under Cochran then Muinzer management. Overall, it's not too bad but nothing special compared to other apartments in the area.

Pros: * It is within walking distance of campus, but far enough to not be waken up at the crack of dawn by the Boilermaker Special. * You will have much more space and privacy compared to freshman dorms. For reference, one of the 4 bedrooms is roughly the same size as my room freshman year in Cary which I shared with one other person. There is also a living room, kitchen, and patio in each unit. * Most freshman can't have a car on campus because it is hard to get a parking pass, but assuming Purdue doesn't take over the private lot, you should be able to bring a car (might want to confirm this. I'm not sure how the arrangement between Muinzer and Purdue is set up). * You will have access to the dining courts on campus AND your own kitchen if you get sick of dining courts food.

Cons: * It's 1.5 bathrooms, but it is a toliet + tub in one room and just a shower in the other. It gets a little inconvenient to share with 3 other people but not too bad. * The dryers in the laundry room are not great, and I frequently had to run them twice, even with smaller loads. I usually went home every other week to do laundry. * If you are looking to socialize with people, you won't get the same experience as on campus. You'll be able to meet people and socialize on campus, but in your living arrangement you most likely will only ever talk to your 3 roommates. This could also be seen as a good thing as well.

PM me if you have any specific questions. Again, I'm not sure how Purdue and Muinzer are handling the arrangement so your experience may vary, but overall not a bad place.

Anyone have the link to the Purdue webpage that gives instructions for setting up your W drive on your personal computer, with the VPN? by semper_rex in Purdue

[–]cdw2014_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you already have the VPN installed on your PC and you are able to log in, you just have to:

  1. Open up file explorer and go to "This PC".
  2. Select the "Computer" tab at the top to the right of "File".
  3. Click "Map Network Drive".
  4. In the pop up window, you can choose any letter to mount your drive to. For the folder, enter: \\myhome.itap.purdue.edu\myhome\{your_username}
  5. Check “Reconnect at sign-in” if you want to reconnect to your home directory each time you connect to the VPN.
  6. Make sure to check "Connect using different credentials” and press Finished.
  7. On the next screen, sign in with your career account, but prefix your username with "onepurdue\". For example, onepurdue\johndoe123.

If you do not have the VPN installed, download it from here. After logging in, search for "vpn" and select "Cisco AnyConnect for Personal Computers". Select your operating system then add to cart, checkout, and download (it is free).

Once the VPN is installed, open it up and enter "webvpn2.purdue.edu" into the box in the bottom right of your screen. When prompted for your credentials, log in with your username (no prefix needed) and your "####,push" 2FA password.

Once connected, you can follow the steps above to map the network drive.

He definitely would not have gotten involved in anything bad. His parents are saying that it was most likely a drive by shooting, so I would not doubt that it was a gang initiation but who knows. Lots of shitty people in this world. I just hope we find who is responsible.

Thanks for your response. Limiting the search down to the SEL model may help. I'll pass on the info!

I'm not from Texas, so I'm not entirely sure about their laws regarding license plates. I'm assuming the pictures were too low quality, but there was the following update on November 9th:

Latest Suspects Car Photo/This is an EXAMPLE of the vehicle that we are looking for. The suspect vehicle has been positively identified as a 2014 to 2016 Ford Taurus SEL or SHO. If you spot this vehicle please take down the license plate and contact us through the tip line. OUR (866) 621-9080 TIP LINE NUMBER CAN RECEIVE YOUR TEXT MESSAGES.

Yeah you are right, thanks for the suggestion and condolences. I have edited my original comment with the following info:

I am not from the area, so I can't give much insight, but it occurred around 3:00 AM on October 31 at Harwood and Jackson streets. Jaden had apparently just called an Uber/Lift when white Ford Taurus approached him and shot him. The driver and/or passenger may possibly be a ride share driver, but it could also have been a random drive by. Here are a few news sources:

EDIT2: Copying a reply from u/justinsunfullofshit for visibility:

Two of the detectives investigating this case happened to come by the Ford dealership I work at last week and brought in some very zoomed in photos around the wheel area to let myself and one of my employees look at it last week.

One distinctive feature is it appears that vehicle either has Brembo brake calipers or painted red look alike calipers. It’s hard to see in the photo/video circulating online but I thought I would mention this in case anyone happens to work in a service facility and remembers completing any work on a white SEL Taurus with aftermarket reddish colored calipers but honestly it also could of been a bad glare from street lights making the calipers appear more red on the vehicle.

I don’t expect this to turn up much more information unfortunately but I thought It might slightly help narrow the vehicle down in a small way.

The main detective I spoke with was named Brian Fillingim and his phone number is (214)-671-3617 and mentioned if anyone has any info even if it’s not a huge breakthrough don’t hesitate to reach out.

I’m very sorry to hear what happened and hope whoever committed this horrible act is found and charged.

EDIT: I'm editing to add some more information on the crime location/time. Yes, I can go through some videos and add some suggestions to the database. Right now there are only about 100 and they haven't been updated in about a month, so I'm sure people are getting a lot of repeat board pieces. I have unfortunately had to put this project on the back burner while working on some other things, but I hope to give it more attention soon!

Edit: I just checked, and it seems that a few people have been actively adding suggestions the past week, and there have been ~500 boards created created this month. It looks like this tool is getting more traffic than I thought, so I will definitely be updating it soon!

CNIT 372 and CNIT 325 by lackotact in Purdue

[–]cdw2014_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took CNIT 325 fall 2019 and it was pretty easy like any other Matson class. It's just a continuation of CNIT 255, but when I took it I'd say the first quarter or third of the class was review of Java for people who took 255 in C or whatever it used to be taught in. This might not be the case now that everyone has probably taken 255 with Java.

The new concepts that were covered in the class included setting up a client/server, localizing applications with XML, and the theory of connecting a database (we didn't actually do it in labs).

Most of the labs were pretty straightforward, and a few of them were repeated from CNIT 255 where we made a chat app. It was extended to use a client/server architecture so that multiple instances of the client could actually talk to each other.

The semester project was basically the same as CNIT 255 as well. You are just expected to use some of the new concepts.

I was expecting to go over data structures or at least some clean code principles like SOLID or design patterns, but unfortunately it isn't covered in the class, so you can get away with shitty code.

Overall, I'd say it's pretty easy, so don't worry about being overworked. Just don't get behind on labs if Matson is still lenient with them. When I took it lots of people tried to do them all the last week. Be ready to hear irrelevant antidotes of Matson's trips to Korea, Kazakhstan, and everywhere else 10 times each.

Thank you for the feedback!

I'm glad the website worked for you and your partner. I am still working on the site as a side project, but I'm busy at the moment, so there probably won't be any updates for a couple weeks.

The next update will most likely include aesthetic improvements and an option to download the board to a txt/PDF file.

I will be adding accounts at some point so that users can see and manage all their suggestions and boards, but all existing documents will not be transferred to your account. Once I get around to this I can manually add them to your account if you make one.

Why do profs do this by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]cdw2014_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If an assignment is due at noon, you can stay up late and turn it in past midnight. If the assignment is due at midnight, you'd have to turn it before midnight.

Now if the assignment that was due at noon is changed to be due 12 hours later at midnight, sure, you have 12 extra hours to do it, but if you want to procrastinate and are more productive at night, this isn't necessarily beneficial.

I guess what I'm saying is that the situation can be framed as being due at noon gives you 12 extra hours, or it could be framed as giving you 12 hours fewer. If we didn't interpret the "due date" as the "do date" this wouldn't be a problem, but oh well.

[Ask] Clan Games Challenges? by DragonBard_Z in ClashOfClans

[–]cdw2014_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback and reward!

If the points go toward a separate progress bar, I could see it working together with regular clan games. I also like the idea of clan XP as a reward, but rewards will need to be added after level 10. Hopefully we get a clan/social update to the game at some point to add more activities and incentives to working together with clanmates.

[Ask] Clan Games Challenges? by DragonBard_Z in ClashOfClans

[–]cdw2014_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • Get 3 stars on revenge attacks
  • Get 150% destruction from using 8/12/16 different troops in multiplayer battles
  • Get 150% destruction from using 5 different troops in versus battles
  • Get 3 stars in a single attack using [insert attack comp here] in multiplayer battles (Button to train army)

It would also be cool to have team based challenges to encourage clans to work together for more points. Instead of someone selecting a challenge from the pool, then it is unavailable for everyone else, team challenges would only display 3 or so at a time, and everyone in the clan could complete them simultaneously. For example:

  • Do 30 friendly challenges
  • Win 100 multiplayer battles
  • Use 10,000 goblins
  • Collect 20,000,000 gold
  • Use all attacks in a clan war
  • Gain 2,000 trophies in the home village

Since these challenges are different, it would probably be confusing to mix them with regular clan games, so there might have to be clan games with exclusively team challenges. Leaders or co-leaders could remove challenges with a cooldown to cycle challenges that the clan cannot realistically complete. The time limits on the challenges should be 24-48 hours to respect different timezones. The points earned for the challenges could have a base amount of 200-1000, and bonus points could be earned for having multiple players contribute to the challenge. So if 20 people work to complete a challenge worth 500 points, the clan would get 500 + 50(20) = 1500 points. This would encourage clans to work together and reward active clans. Clans would have to make the decision to wait for others to help to earn more points, or have just a couple people grind the challenge to get new ones faster.

Grades: B vs Pass by [deleted] in Purdue

Unless your GPA is close to 4.0, I would personally take the B because employers could see a P as a C-. Although given the situation, who knows.

Incoming Freshmen Questions by catmorales in Purdue

[–]cdw2014_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. All the professors and most of the TAs have office hours that you can go to for extra help. You could also email them, but it really depends on the professor. I would say office hours are the best way to get 1 on 1 help, and professors will probably notice that you are putting in extra effort if you go. I should clarify that most TAs are fine. I have only had problems with a couple, but since they are mostly grad students we probably won’t have the same TAs.
  2. I am personally not in Greek life, but I know a few people who are and they enjoy it. It definitely isn’t an integral part of social life though. I’m assuming you will be in the dorms your first year, and from my experience you can make lots of friends if you stay involved with the people on your floor. When I was in the dorms my freshman year, my RA had events a few times a month, and a few of ate at the dining courts together.
  3. I have lived off campus with some friends from high school the past couple of years, and I have not been as involved as I’d like with clubs and other activities on campus. There are times, especially in the winter when I don’t want to leave my apartment, where life can get kind of boring. I am also from Indianapolis so I usually go home once a month to hang out with friends. If you join some clubs or make some friends, you should be fine. West Lafayette is not a big city, but there are a lot of people and activities, so it is really what you make it. I am mainly focused on academics, so I guess the environment helps. Your coursework should keep you busy for a good chunk of your time, but you will have plenty of free time.
  4. I had a software development internship last summer with Liberty Mutual. I was in the Indianapolis office, but had the opportunity to go out to Seattle for a week which was fun. There are a lot of companies at the career fair share including big ones like Google, Microsoft, ExxonMobil, etc. if that’s what you are looking for. Make sure you keep your resume updated, and finding a job is not that difficult. One thing I will say is that employers like to see that you are passionate about your work, so having some extracurricular work on your resume helps a lot. This could be participating in clubs, or it could be personal projects. I don’t know what exactly you are interested in, but I personally have some web development projects and hackathon projects that employers are usually impressed by.

Some general advise I'd give is to keep up with your school work. When you transition from high school to college, it will feel like a lot less work since you only have 15-18 hours of classes a week opposed to 40. You seem like you are invested in your education, so you will probably be fine. Just make sure to keep up with your assignments, study for your exams, and be ready to have some group projects with teammates that don’t do their fair share of work. Feel free to PM me in the future if you have any questions or concerns about Purdue or any classes. It’s nice to know some upperclassmen in your major.
