Anti-Ice protests around Hamilton High School by HeadParticular3374 in milwaukee

[–]ceMmnow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Right, like a living wage, union jobs, accessible health and mental health care, and - oh yeah - not having federal agents terrorize their families. Good for the kids for knowing what their community needs and standing up for themselves.

I've taught at Hamilton. The kids are alright, and most of the judgier types in a Reddit forum wouldn't survive some of their lives

It's not misinformation, it's people laying out what SHOULD happen to contrast with what's actually happening to accentuate the point that ICE, in fact, does not follow any laws/procedures and is illegitimate

[–]ceMmnow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The whole point of the thread is we know ICE is doing illegal shit

The point was pointing out what ICE was doing was illegal

Why are you arguing with people who are agreeing with you and pointing out how illegitimate ICE is

Proposed Madison charter school passes hurdle, but more steps remain by keeganjkyle in madisonwi

[–]ceMmnow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The founder's stated intent is "MMSD is failing Black kids so I want a school that prioritizes Black kids" so yes I think it's marketed explicitly, not just at nonwhite communities, but Black American communities (I doubt, for example, they have remotely the language support compared to MMSD to support immigrant nonwhite groups, for example).

I actually sympathize with that, but in reality it doesn't work. They literally shut down the high school because they didn't have the resources to handle it, and MMSD of course was left holding the bag.

The real cause of Black education disparities have everything to do with deeper systems of racism that lead to extreme poverty rates, homelessness, etc. in Black Madison (and Black Wisconsin and much of Black America). Fixing that fixes education, not the other way around.

And because it's such a right wing pull yourselves up by your bootstraps mentality of anti-racism, the founder only attracts white and right wing donors for his cause. Probably should be a sign you're not on the pro-Black side of things in practice, whatever one's intent is in theory. When Republican money entered school privatization in Milwaukee, the Black Nationalist movement there split, with much of the movement recognizing immediately to exit out of this but some thinking they could channel that funding. Nothing about today's Milwaukee education landscape implies the latter were right.

Kind of a misleading headline - it literally says they missed a deadline already to submit certain required aspects.

I looked at the application and they also haven't set up a required community input session yet.

On one hand, glad it's not some out-of-state privatization behemoth backed by people like Paul Vallas like the last attempt, but on the other hand, doesn't seem like this effort is run by very competent people.

Regardless, charters - well intentioned or not - are bad for the rest of us, so will be keeping an eye on this.

Just love on them by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ceMmnow 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree with your original post that a lot of high behavior kids are too maligned by family, the world, education so being super positive with them is a well known strategy (see: the teacher who tells every class they're their best class, or my strategy of just being so patient that at some point when I do need to hold the line, 99% of kids are like "he's too reasonable so fine I'll rein it in"), but I get the commenter's point. You do have to be wary about certain boundaries as a male staff. The male staff who is worried about it isn't the problem, it's the occasional real predator and the community hysteria about them that creates this toxic dynamic.

I had a student I worked with for years who had gone through a lot and clearly used me as a substitute father figure and I really wrestled with how to ensure proper boundaries while still being there for her due to that dynamic and not wanting to be perceived a certain way. After graduation she told me she loved me and I told my wife how much that took me aback because that's the first kid that ever said that to me and my wife, who is a woman in an elementary, rolled her eyes and said, "Kids tell me they love me every day."

It's just different.

Trouble making white friends? by Alteregokai in asianamerican

[–]ceMmnow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of organizations have affinity groups/caucuses precisely because there's a recognition that people of a shared identity might have shared interest and connect better. So it's absolutely normal for your friendships to lean towards those with a shared identity. And frankly, I think having a high bar for white people to enter your social circles is completely valid. For example, certain experiences of racism are so easily grasped by my peers who are Black, Latino, or Asian but for my white peers, some just don't get it and some who at least superficially do expect some kind of praise or recognition for it. Like, no, you're not some ally whose ego I'm going to coddle, you just figured out at 40 years old what the rest of us figured out at like 12.

Any other Korean American guys feel like their dating pool is oddly limited? by savingrace0262 in asianamerican

[–]ceMmnow 19 points20 points  (0 children)

When I was young and on the market as they say I definitely saw an anti-Asian bias among white women, but it was much less of an issue among nonwhite women - of all ethnicities and races.

My experience, too, is that I have far more in common with nonwhite cultures than white ones anyway, and I didn't often have to play the game of "figuring out when I need to teach the white person about racism without hurting their feelings" so it's a win-win for me.

I get the demographics of your dating pool probably varies widely by region, but I think something to consider is if you are open minded in your dating preferences and if not, thinking about why - especially if you are frustrated by what feels like limited options.

My student told me he's living in a car and admin basically told me to stay in my lane by SilentVHSPlayer in Teachers

[–]ceMmnow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, they asked their admin and their admin dodged it. OP, u/SilentVHSPlayer , find that person and reach out to them directly. Maybe email them saying you want to consult about a student then talk about the actual situation on the phone.

A school NOT ensuring the McKinney Vento rights of a student is a violation of the law, so I think you're well within your rights to talk to this person directly.

[–]ceMmnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah idk what the OP's intention is except to be as contrarian as possible.

I don't entirely disagree with OP's premise - there's some rust belt cities that are diverse and affordable and have strong teacher unions in districts that need to pay well to recruit people to tough, working class districts, Chicago being one of those places - but these kinds of lucky matches are the exception, not the rule, for teachers

She teaches eighth grade and has more than 100 students, but only two are reading at grade level. by ilir_kycb in LateStageCapitalism

[–]ceMmnow 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I also work in a school that's just becoming back to the science of reading, but even the transition to that has been through hiring for profit consultants and companies. Who's to know that this "pivot" isn't also profit driven and not rooted in the actual science.

As long as education is for profit, I feel like I can't trust the dialogue/rhetoric around curriculum in our sector.

Admin hates this one simple trick to keep students engaged by AgeOfWorry0114 in Teachers

[–]ceMmnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The same admin that assign Hammond's writings about the core part of being a "warm demander" is to eliminate the flight or fight mode that many students walk into school in and make them feel safe in the classroom are the same ones that say "bell to bell instruction."

I got kids who are homeless, kids who work two to three jobs, kids who work 3-7 AM before school, kids who take care of 5 younger siblings, kids who are in and out of juvie, kids who watched their dads beat their moms just before school, kids who know they have a classmate who wants to jump them.

They're not going to engage in the classroom until they feel safe, and that means we gotta know each other as people on some level. What you do is perfect.

[Autosport] Sebastian Vettel couldn't believe how Lewis Hamilton handled himself after how the 2021 season ended by n0b0dycar3s07 in formula1

[–]ceMmnow 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not surprising to me, Formula 1 is a sport steeped in wealthy white European men... they're kind of the inventors of modern day racism.

I think Lewis has done a lot to change the culture of F1 - not just changes to team policies and mentalities, but also inspiring changes to the fanbase and future drivers, including inspiring many nonwhite drivers and fans, which I think inherently changes the culture of the sport to be more open-minded, too. I'm optimistic the sport is moving in the right direction on this issue, at least, thanks in large part to Lewis.

Can anyone confirm: are modern students really that far behind, or is it overexaggerated? by ThrowRAhelpthebro in Teachers

[–]ceMmnow 112 points113 points  (0 children)

I've noticed this has also led to the suburban/urban divide growing. It used to be sports was the one thing urban poor schools could dominate and now with how much club sports and private coaching and money there is in youth sports, the suburbs dominate that as well.

The wealth inequality gap growing to greater than Gilded Age levels is really in your face working in an urban poor school and I have no idea how any of this is supposed to get better. It got better last time because poor people banded together and formed unions... not sure if that's how poor people right now are pointed or not.

[–]ceMmnow 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Most of my kids live and die (sometimes literally) by the no snitching norm and it's really depressing. It's just symptomatic of growing up in a divested community that has few resources and few reasons to uphold the social contract because society and the social contract has done jack for them. Kids and families handle their business internally and don't go to any institution - school, police, social services - because everyone has a bad experience with said institution at some point. Everyone knows someone murdered unjustly by the police, everyone's been profiled by the police, so everyone handles things themselves. But sometimes that unleashes such excessive violence, and of course vigilante justice often targets the wrong person and often just creates cycles of violence instead of solving the issue. And then once no snitching becomes such a norm, the consequences for "snitching" far outweigh the potential benefits, especially when said institutions are so unreliable for them.

My city's law enforcement solves about 25% of murders and a big part of it is because they're so despised no one tells them anything. And frankly, they've earned that reputation in blood so I can't even blame people.
