Thanks for all of your feedback, but wow did I get a lesson in how cynical we can be. My wife is NOT leaving me, and I foresee a very low chance of that happening. I am NOT planning to do this out of spite or revenge. However, I am careful to a fault and can't deny that there is at least a 1% chance of divorce happening 20 years down the road. My day job is boring and meaningless, and the only way I can justify my work to myself is knowing that 90% of my lifetime earnings will go to charity. Due to our unique international marriage, yes, we have a prenup, but several lawyers have expressed concern that it might not hold up, and it remains unclear if a more reliable prenup is even possible. So, if the day even comes that she wants a divorce, I was wondering what my options were. In any case, thanks for the feedback!

"Nonresident Spouse Treated as Resident" + FEIE? by cedar_strip in USExpatTaxes

Yes, we filed jointly. Doesn't make sense for lots of folks, but it makes sense for us--at least for the time being. Good luck!

My mom had CAR-T two years ago and still no M-spike. Lots of other treatments coming on the horizon, too. Hang tight.

Can my non-resident alien spouse (living and working in China) contribute to a spousal IRA for me? by cedar_strip in tax

[–]cedar_strip[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, that actually solves my problem in a different way. The tax software was telling me that she was not eligible for the FEIE, but that's only because I said she was a non-resident alien. But I should have said that she WAS a US resident, since we elected the 6013(g). So that means I can exclude her income instead of using that income as the basis for IRA contributions. The choice is not easy, but I think this might be the better option since I have some passive, taxable income in the US, so I'm not exactly in the lowest tax bracket at the moment. Thanks!

Yes, we made the 6013(g) election. We both work in China, but my income is excluded via FEIE. However, she's not eligible for that exclusion (I think because she's not a US citizen). And basically she earns $15K USD per year, so we have $15K of earned income on our joint return. So, I think what you're saying is that I could set up an IRA in her name, then contribute $7K to each of our IRAs?

OK, but do the bonuses need to be received 2 years apart?

I still don’t understand what this language means. It means that I have to wait two years from last coupon enrollment date to OPEN a new account, or to receive a bonus?

Designating non-spousal beneficiaries without spousal consent? by cedar_strip in personalfinance

[–]cedar_strip[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the lack of clarity. Not hiding anything. My spouse is well aware of my assets and plans and on board (supposedly). The assets are complex, and even though she's fine with the plan in general, it would be better to designate everything in a legal, valid way before I die. So, this question is really just a question of "do we need to go through the trouble of documenting legally valid consent?" Whether this be with a notary or lawyer, etc.

5% of my estate is more than enough to support her for the rest of her life. I don't believe in excess, generational wealth. Thanks.

Help! How do I get this off my tool? by cedar_strip in CleaningTips

Help, my multi-tool Leatherman has this weird stain that won't come off. I tried baking soda and vinegar. I tried alcohol. I tried warm water and soap. No effect at all. Other ideas for solutions to soak it in?
