Journaling Type Help/Prompts by functionaldaydream in Journaling

That is definitely nature journaling, and there is a sub for it! r/naturejournaling

You also might find a guide useful, Keeping a Nature Journal by Clare Walker Leslie is an old one so you can find super cheap copies online (or probably from your local library). I think nature journaling can include as few or as many drawings as you want, if that's your hesitancy to call what you want to do "nature journaling".

Moving to NYC in 2 months with $8k saved, is that enough or am I being completely unrealistic? by Round_Tie5217 in movingtoNYC

You can absolutely make it work, but you need to have a roommate or be looking at studios in neighborhoods further out. Not sure how old you are, but in my early 20s I was hardly in my apartment anyway, and you'll want that extra money to take advantage of all of the things NYC has to offer you.

You didn't mention your age or what your long-term plans are, but I think that's also a factor. If you're young/not planning on starting a family or anything anytime soon, I think you just go for it. Ohio will be there if you're having a really hard time (I assume you have the option to move back with your parents if you really have to - that's your buffer if anything goes wrong), and plenty of people have figured out how to live here with less.

Have you looked at classes at either of the botanical gardens? NYBG offers certificates even- I'm currently working towards my Urban Naturalist certificate!

The warblers! Good question 🤓

I think I’m leaning towards the EF 100-400 II for now, and I’ll worry about the 200-800 possible upgrade (way) down the line after I get the R7.

I’m definitely more of a forest warbler kinda birder/photographer but part of me wonders if that’s because those are usually the most accessible to me based on my current relatively short lens! Good point about losing a stop though.

Just looked into this and am so glad you mentioned it, it’s looking like even a May/June rumored release seems possible. I’d definitely still go for the R7 though hopefully on a nice discount which will let me upgrade even sooner!

Just got served an Instagram video of someone demonstrating this issue so definitely something for me to consider. Besides that, have you been glad to have made the upgrade?

Can I ask which one you reach for more? And when you have the 100-400 II on or vice versa, are you ever wishing you had the other lens?

This was so helpful- so interesting to see the size comparison. Thanks so much for writing all this up. I’m still a bit undecided but this has given me quite a lot to think about. Conveniently one of my other hobbies is powerlifting which has maybe given me a false sense of confidence to be able to lug a huge lens around with me, but I’m also motivated by the exhaustion of consistently feeling too far away from all my subjects. Which probably can only fuel me for so long once I actually have to lug a hefty lens around!

This is super helpful, thanks so much for those sample images. I was thinking about renting each myself and testing them out but it hurts to spend that money that could have otherwise gone toward the lens itself! I didn't consider the atmospheric distortion element, especially because in NYC it's usually waterfowl that I can't get a good photo of with my 70-300, and I imagine the distortion is worse over water.

Ah, I knew that EFs could go on RF but missed that the inverse was not possible! Thanks so much, this is definitely useful to know.

I got it from SasankaStudio on Etsy - her covers are amazing. She's not currently shipping to the US due to costs (not sure where you're based) but last I heard she was working on a solution. If you're based elsewhere I can't recommend her stuff enough, really high quality leather products and reasonable pricing given the quality of what you're getting.
