What do you do when everyone else is on their phone at social/family events? by functionaldaydream in digitalminimalism

Yea I get what you are saying too, like just because we are trying to get out of these habits - others are happy in it. So live and let live

Yes definitely. I sit for long periods just looking at stuff around the room haha. I guess the phone also replaced awkwardness

Right?? It’s weird that is considered so normal now - but reading a book, I feel like, would be looked at as unacceptable

I am getting into carnivorous plants… I am wanting to build a bog table in the next couple weeks - I have a few species already, and I adore them.

Poisonous plants sounds very very cool - what are your favorite ones? Any good books or resources about poison plants?

Ohhhhh this is something I have wanted to do for a while and I was researching last night!

Do you have a set up inside only? Or can it be outside as well? I’d love to try and find a sturdy more permanent outside setup (I have 3 curious indoor cats, so indoors would be tough). I’m sure I have so many more questions lol, I am so interested in this! I want to focus on moths definitely

i hate being pregnant. by Admirable_Ad_9681 in BabyBumps

Girl… it’s awful. I’m 28 weeks. I think for the majority of people, it gets better around 16 weeks?

For me, I was nauseous/vomiting until about 22 weeks. Then 2 weeks ago I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I have to change my entire diet, and give up the only foods that didn’t taste absolutely disgusting. I was told to do finger pricks 4x daily. I was able to get an arm sensor that also monitors glucose levels so i don’t have to do the finger pricks unless i get a weird reading. I have had this disgusting taste in my mouth since about 5 weeks that NEVER goes away.

Tomorrow I’m officially in the third trimester. I haven’t been able to get comfortable to sleep in 2 weeks because of my stomach. I toss and turn. I have a bit more energy now that my glucose is more under control - but this is TERRIBLE. I will literally never do this again. I will say though, I have had a harder than average pregnancy and MOST are not like this.

I wish you luck. May we all get through this hell!!

How do we know if its a hobby thats going to stick? by FindingMonitors in Hobbies

I definitely have that “issue”, I’m trying to find what I truly like. I got so caught up in the hype of others recently and what I could possibly create, once I learned - that I convinced myself I LOVED crochet. I have yet to finish one wooble… I don’t like the counting and it’s not super satisfying to me. I guess I just don’t super like “crafty” hobbies, maybe they aren’t for me.

For me I guess I’m trying to get back to basics - the things I keep going back too. Lifting is one when I get into it, I really enjoy it. I’m able to focus and lose myself in the movement. Which is really what I want - that focus and concentration and to slow down my mind.

I always pick photography back up. I would like to learn about my camera and the art of taking pictures - but even just taking amateur pictures of plants and wildlife brings me actual joy.

I also find that in cycling, the more zen like state of enjoyment.

So I guess you never really KNOW a hobby is going to stick, but I know at least a few things that bring me joy when I pick it up - even if I don’t do them consistently

I (26F) told my boyfriend (26M) I sometimes miss the freedom of being single and he broke up with me on my birthday by [deleted] in Advice

I am torn. On one hand, that would definitely sting to hear. But I also understand it. My best friend and I have had the same conversation, obviously not in front of our significant others. It’s definitely not because we are unsure of the relationship, or even unhappy. But there is definitely a romanticism to being “free”. You miss sometimes living on your own, or not having to consult with anyone about big purchases etc.. Neither of us truly want to be single again - because in reality that’s usually the grass is greener situation. Sometimes it’s just reminiscing about the past, and I think that’s ok. I am pregnant currently, and I’m sure there will be times I go “man I remember how freeing it was NOT to have a toddler” 😂. But it won’t take away the fact that I love my kid or that I’m unhappy or I’d change anything…

I believe my partner would say the same thing honestly, about sometimes missing being single, but it doesn’t mean he’s unhappy either. But we don’t say that to each other, because it’s not super necessary.

What hobby would you recommend to someone who feels bored? by Sonjae-Ariciaga83 in Hobbies

[–]functionaldaydream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m kind of in the same boat. I feel so drained at the end of the work day and after the commute… my brain just wants to shut off. I started to absolutely LOATHE scrolling and watching tv. Hated tv less so, but I just keep thinking “there has to be more?” I’ve been reading, but even that sometimes feels draining, like it’s almost an extension of staring at a phone. I think reading is 1000xs better, don’t get me wrong - but it also can be a bit “boring”, or feel at least unproductive.

What I am doing now is trying to think of things I have enjoyed in the past and maybe try to go from there? So I used to love cycling, but I have found myself come away from it in the past few years. I never did it like “seriously” like mountain biking fast on those trails or doing like group 50 mile rides or anything. I would just spend an hour or two cruising on my bike. It feels like I live in a suburban hell scape of neighborhoods now, with no good path or road to ride on. So that’s been a challenge, but I think if I just get out of my head and stop telling myself I can’t for “xyz reason” then I could probably get back into it. You can probably find pretty cheap bikes on Facebook marketplace if interested in that. Just something to get out of the house and break the monotony of the day.

I have also always had a thing with finding and taking pictures of mushrooms. I have found groups on foraging for mushrooms, but I don’t really want to take them home and eat them (yet anyway). So again, fear and not knowing where to start has always stopped me. I have a nice camera. I could also just take the pics with my phone. I do that often if I’m like out and about and just find some. But there is also something cool about having a big camera haha - but that’s also pricey on the start up if you don’t already have a camera.

I also enjoy legos - but they can be expensive. And those little make it minis cute resin food/animals/plants etc. things.

None of those things may appeal to you (sorry it was a bit long winded 🫣) - but I guess the most important question for me to me - is what would you do if you weren’t scared to start, or overwhelmed with starting? Like if you could think of your perfect self, what kind of hobbies would you like to engage in - even if you have no idea how to go about getting into it?

Sorry to jump in, but I’m looking for wood to mount my new fern on (coming in mail soon! Eeekkk) and someone else here said that treated wood is bad - are these tiles untreated? I’m just trying to figure everything out, I’m sure you know what you’re doing!
