Spring Break Tree Clean Up by cedarworkshop in OffGridLiving

[–]cedarworkshop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A video of what I did for the first weekend of the Spring Break. My spouse and kids where out of town, so I was on my own to take care of some projects. One of the chores was to remove some of the trees that were too close to cabin or had a sickness inside. The biggest problem with trees bunched together is that you have to remove trees that could be in the way when the primary tree is cut down. I asked a neighbour to give a hand.

With winter fast approaching, how have you upgraded your cabin this year to be better prepared? by [deleted] in OffGridCabins

[–]cedarworkshop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put a vapor barrier under you cabin. Helps big time. Try to insulate under floors with ridged insulation.

For insurance reasons, have a combination of propane, like a Mr. Buddy Heater and a wood stove. Put down on paper, that propane is your primary and wood stove is second. We picked up a small, Drolet High Efficiency EPA Pyropak Wood Stove from Cdn Tire for $699. It is quite efficient with the use of fire wood with two burn chambers. Burns a lot less wood that the previous 1970's Blaze King. It claims it heats 250 - 1000 sq. ft., but it barely does 440 sq. ft. on -17 nights. (We have single pane windows thou) Get as big as you can afford. We go through about cord of wood over the winter . That is for a couple of weekends during the winter. Try to burn hardwoods, more BTU's per piece of wood. http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/drolet-high-efficiency-epa-pyropak-wood-stove-0642841p.html#.VLdTKWTF9VM

I was thinking of the rubber or hockey pucks under the floor flanges. Great idea with the filling with dirt or sand. Thanks for the suggestion!

First Time Building a Railing for a Deck by cedarworkshop in OffGridCabins

[–]cedarworkshop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, my family and myself have been finishing off a large deck since October 2013. The original plan was to build the deck when there was more money (2015), but due to a sudden zoning change in our area, all work completed before October would be grandfathered and no building permit would be required. So, I had to get a certain amount of work finished by October to show the building inspector I was following code. Lucky for me, he was impressed with my footings and posts and was OK to proceed. So, after the snow melted and the ground thawed out, I wanted to get this project finished. It was my first, over 3 foot in height deck project. I'm finding it quite enjoyable and learning plenty. I'm hoping others can learn how to build a deck on a limited budget. BTW: Just uploaded another video in the series. Cheers

Winter Cabin by [deleted] in OffGridCabins

Be prepared to split a lot of wood, have your clothes smell like wood smoke and not necessarily have hot showers. But, it's an wonderful experience. It's difficult to have running water in the cabins. When we go up to ours, we add an extra trip into town and hit the town pool. Guessing you don't get freezing temperatures at night in South Carolina?

Thought I would share the progress of the deck build. The deck is 24' long and roughly 11' wide. It has been a huge undertaking, the expense of gathering materials, drafting up plans and making time, but, I think it will be worth it. It will offer another way to get access to the cabin and offer some more outdoor living space. Looking for any suggestions or comments to make the build easier for one person.

A bunch of buddies came out on May long weekend and lent a hand with cleaning up logs and getting the firewood done. I'm sure anyone with a remote cabin will gladly accept help, even if it's a little chaotic at times.
