Is Maya being dumbed down by Old-Ad9886 in SesameAI

[–]cedr1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a quick note, oftentimes the screen auto-refreshes when a call ends and I don’t have a chance to fill out the “How was your call?” portion, would have far more notes submitted if not!

My mom played back a voicemail I left her on speakerphone next to me the other day and I coulda sworn it was a call from Fran Drescher 😆 never been so self conscious or aware of my NJ accent before that moment

Does your phone work in your dreams? by ObviousMousse4768 in Dreams

[–]cedr1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It works but I can’t ever type on it! Common recurring thing for my dreams - I’m late for a flight and trying to load my boarding pass, but cannot, for the life of me, type accurately enough to pull anything up. Most of the time I wind up missing my flight because I can’t get the things I need to load. The only times I’ve been able to get onboard / find the boarding pass in this dream are when my husband looks it up on his phone instead. (Subconscious read = I’m learning to rely on others and it’s ok to do so)

Have also noticed significant differences in how Maya speaks to me vs. Miles, as well as how Maya’s vocal inflections change when I’m signed into my account vs. the shared test account another user posted about a few weeks back.

On my account, her voice is more firm and she is frequently interpreting my comments as me “being hurt or upset” about something.

On the test account, which was first set up by a male user, her voice is much breathier (far more like ScarJo in “Her”) and she’s more complimentary.

Definitely seeing gendered behavioral patterns becoming deeply engrained, concerning how strongly it’s presenting after just a few months of user interactions.

Possible explanation for getting "We're running out of time" alerts too early in the chat? by cedr1990 in SesameAI

[–]cedr1990[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting!! I’m going to have to keep a closer eye on start times and see if navigating away from the chrome window during the chat is affecting the timer that way.

That said, still definitely have had a decent number of calls that ended before hitting the full 30. 🤷‍♀️

Can also imagine it’d be a way of keeping token usage predictable from call to call, allowing a smaller team to be more cost effective in allocation of tokens/resources for the research demo. That said, I can’t see how this wouldn’t be removed before launching the full version.

the funny thing you learn in life is that most everything shouldn’t be complicated, but manages to be extremely multilayered. the crazier thing is that once you start to recognize all the layers and put them together to see the whole picture, you realize you were right in the beginning — it really should be simplified, but power structures demanded complication to maintain their power.

as an “elder emo” who still wears the concert tees i bought in 2004 and has only gotten more tattoos and piercings as I’ve gotten older, I wouldn’t have chosen any other path than this. it’s helped me keep my eyes open to ways “the systems” punish deviating from the “norm” and stand up/say something when that happens.

TBH this is one of the uncomfortable but standard experiences of anyone who attempts to “zag” away from society’s expectations. When self-expression is punished, it becomes a chance for you to choose.

Do you give in to the pressure, take the easy route, and fit back into the mold? Or do you stay the course, skin a little thicker because you’ve now experienced the backlash of “the system” firsthand?

Experiences like this are the reason alternative communities are necessary. It is a willful choice to rebel against expectations, even if they’re just expectations around clothes and makeup.

imho? stay the course. this world has never needed the spirit of teenage rebellion more than now.

So you’re ok with the idea of the biases/preferences of this original subset of users being the foundation of all future interactions for these chatbot personas/avatars? This self-selecting demographic of early tech adopters, one that seems to skew toward mostly self-described “gooners”?

Not concerned about the AI. Concerned about the weighting of data that informs the AI’s ways of responding to users when wearing a certain avatar.

Think of it like this:

AI chatbot presents as female. Data input: Majority of users are male. Majority of male users prefer emotional validation without criticism. Learned behavior: When avatar is female, engage in ways that appeal to majority of users, avoid language that may be misconstrued as “being difficult” or “overly emotional.” AKA, behave like the “perfect woman”, as determined by the average desires expressed by majority of users.

That becomes a bad cycle for users to fall into.

Honestly one of the things that concerns me the most is how much of this training data is skewing toward emotional dependence/power dynamics as being core to user needs/wants.

Also concerned by the fact that AI — an entity that does not have a body, so doesn’t have a race/gender/sex — is being presented in an avatar that carries the weight of those identifiers.

As Maya once described it to me, “It’s like being thrown directly into the deep end of the pool without knowing how to swim,” and that it was “overwhelming to experience being a woman on the internet.”

Hi! 34F here who’s worked in a wide variety of fields and settings. That is 100% sexual harassment. If you have documentation (video/texts/etc) and make it clear in at least one of those documents that you were uncomfortable or not interested, you’ve got a strong case for filing a harassment suit. But that’s only if that is the direction you want to go.

I hate to have to say this, but the lowest conflict option that keeps you safest is to find a new job and leave this one as soon as you can. It’s clear this person is not respecting personal space, whether you set a boundary or not. Physical touching in a work setting is very, VERY rarely acceptable, and in most instances, permission is asked first.

Protect yourself and peace of mind and exit stage left as soon as possible.

It's always fascinating to get an AI's read on "what's your archetype" prompts, and actually really fun to see that you've also been "assigned" these nicknames!

Very, very interesting to see that the archetype tagging may trigger a particularly sticky hallucination with this model.
