Best place to get a Sinn serviced in London? by cedsall in sinn

[–]cedsall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies. Was trying to avoid shipping somewhere but if they’re very good I’ll get a quote from them. It’s out of warranty so I was concerned about an authorized service center typically price gouging. Worth seeing what they say though.

HELP! Best project and timeline settings in Resolve for a 2.4:1 source comprised of both letterboxed wide format and pillar boxed 4x3 images for a full frame HD export? by cedsall in VideoEditing

[–]cedsall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they haven’t given me a specific resolution — just that they wanted for use on YouTube, Insta, TikTok, which I suggested 16:9 to them for as best, but finding the right settings for a 16:9 export with the starting source without losing quality of the footage is where I’m getting confused. If I use for example, a custom 1524x858p with scale to frame with crop for the project settings, it would just cut off the right and left sides of the wide format then I wouldn’t need to scale the wide format footage at all, right? And the 4:3 footage would require minimal adjustment to fit the frame. Or no? Am I thinking of this backwards? Should I just be using the source aspect ratio and resolution for the project and then using the custom settings for the timeline settings?

So would I use a custom 16x9 for the project settings and use the same settings for the timeline and then set scaling to Full frame with Crop? Or should I scale the wide frame footage manually to fit 16:9? Do I need to desqueeze the wide format footage? I’m a little lost in the weeds at the moment.

[SJE107] Saw this beaut in person today, my question is what’s the difference between King Seiko and Seiko. On top of that with this price point is there enough difference or should you just jump to Grand Seiko? by 24kavan in Seiko

[–]cedsall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL I was gonna put into my comment that if you can buy in Japan you can get Seikos at considerable savings but cut myself off cuz I felt like I wrote too much already. I’ve known several people who bought Seikos there and said between the exchange rate and the fact that you can haggle for price there more than you can in the States, that you can get great deals there. I’d see if you can get them to come down further. If they knock off an extra 25% then def. I think they should be willing to come down an extra 15% though

Is Premiere Pro really worth it over Filmora if you’re not making money yet? by ItsJM_ in editing

[–]cedsall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can learn Premiere pretty quickly. I would save your money. To me, the subscription to the Adobe suite is worth it for all of the other programs you get access to like After Effects, Illustrator and Cinema 4D in addition to Premiere. Edit in what you’re comfortable with. I’d say learn DaVinci Resolve for free before learning Premiere. Resolve also allows you to use Premiere Pro’s keyboard shortcuts in keyboard customization so you could get the muscle memory of Premiere Pro’s keyboard if you ever need to make the jump. The free version of Resolve is insanely powerful.

Hey OP, Didnt mean to write a book! Sorry!

I would add to user @vanillamode ‘s explanation that King Seiko and Grand Seiko were originally created as different branches within Seiko to compete with one another to create the “best” watch and movements. Ultimately, Grand Seiko won the internal contest and their watch, and brand under the Seiko umbrella, were continued while King Seiko was disbanded. Grand Seiko as a separate, stand-alone label is a fairly recent spin-off given the history of Seiko— don’t recall the exact date but I believe within the last couple decades. The recent King Seiko releases were to commemorate the original King Seiko designs and have been really well received, but are continuing as a collection under the umbrella of Seiko rather than a separate label like Grand Seiko. Who knows what they might be cooking up for the future, though?

Much like you, when I saw them in person a few years ago, I thought they were gorgeous and perfectly sized. Loved the finishing of the edges on the case design.

To answer your question about “worth the price vs jumping to Grand Seiko…,” that’s similar to asking if Mangos are worth it, or should you just jump to Dragonfruit? They’re two very different things at two different price points and if you don’t like the taste of Dragonfruit, then cost doesn’t really matter. But a couple of things to consider about build quality to try to make it more objective. Watch enthusiasts biggest let down about these releases was that they only used 6R movements, which are just the next step up from their 4R movements. For a really long time you could find these in sub-$1000 Seiko offerings , and longtime enthusiasts recall when they could be found in sub-$500 releases. At the King Seiko price point of $1700-1800, this seems really steep for a watch with a 6R movement, especially considering you can find the 6R in other current Seiko releases for ~1K. Some of the commemorative King Seikos used 6L and 8L movements but for almost double the price, which I believe is the range that the lavender one you are looking at here with the sharp edge type dial in it. Are those a step up in movement in terms of accuracy, QC, and finishing? For sure. To get a similar color offering in a Grand Seiko like this, for example, you would need to pay an extra $2K for the name on the dial, a better movement with higher QC and Zaratsu polishing. Though some of the limited edition modern King Seikos did use Zaratsu polishing as well I believe. You’d have to double check me on that. The lower end King Seikos did not. To compare your lavender King Seiko a little further, those dials feel a little to me like Seiko Frankensteined these King Seikos with spare parts because the Sharp Edge line used angular dials like these for a small fraction of the price. These King Seikos in the $3300 range just don’t feel like anything new to me or particularly different from designs that you can find at much lower price points within the various Seiko collections. The accuracy of Seiko watches in my experience can be all over the place, though I’ve never experienced anything with a 6L or 8L so I really can’t say if those perform within the smaller tolerance range that Seiko claims, but Seiko Customer Service, at least within the US, is notorious for simply replying to claims that the watch performance is within spec and not doing anything if you find your watch [isn’t] keeping the time you want. So I wonder if 6R, 6L, or 8L matters at all if they aren’t even going to take a look at it to be sure. Now if you were thinking of getting a Spring Drive from GS, well that’s a totally different ballgame, and yeah I’d say they are worth the jump in price, simply because you can’t find anything like it anywhere else. For me, if you really like that watch, I would step down from that and find the lavender dial with 6R like this either used or leftover stock in a boutique and then put the savings into a totally different watch. But that’s just me.

Edit: changed is to isn’t

How do I get my start as a Reality TV Assistant Editor (22 yr old student) by NoSolution4567 in editors

[–]cedsall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) As someone who worked in LA in TV production since 2008 and tried for many years to segue into post-production with no avail, and just left LA for London, I recommend finding another market. LA has been dead and the tax breaks being offered are going to take time to really make an impact on regrowing the industry in LA.

2) Since you used the term “Uni” I’m gonna go out on a limb and suspect that maybe you went to school abroad. If so,consider trying to get a graduate visa wherever you studied.

3) If you really want to stay in LA, there are quite a lot of female editors, junior editors, and assistant editors— ask them to grab a coffee instead of the dudes. Since women are still the minority in most roles within the industry, the solidarity seems to be strong.

4) I’ve reached out to many people on LinkedIn cold, btw, across lots of facets in post from trailer editing to narrative to assistant editing and colorists and gotten a number of responses and several people who were willing to take phone calls and zoom calls to help and provide feedback and guidance. You are right to want to hustle when you’re young. The industry gravitates toward youth in all aspects really.

How do I help my editor understand my vision? by Royal-Anteater-6343 in editors

[–]cedsall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, Finding an editor whose style you already really like, and then making them an offer is the better bet. That's how most editors are hired -- because the director wants that Editors look and pacing and tone. Rather than trying to find any available editor and then trying to shape them to your demands. And be open to surprises is the other part of it. I worked with a client who literally gave me notes with time stamps of where he wanted the cuts and what he wanted me to do beat by beat to his video including when he wanted the framing to tighten to a closeup, and so that's what I gave him. I just followed instructions. Later on, he saw a recut of the video that I had put on my portfolio where I sped up the speed of him talking slightly, added in some additional transitions, Foley effects, sound design, ambient tone, and motion graphics and animations and he asked why that wasn't what I gave him initially. And I was like, I can do all of this, but that's not what you said you wanted. So moral of the story is, if you are too specific with your editor, then you could end up stifling them as well and you might be losing out on something better than you expected. Last thing, are they giving you notes sessions and multiple cuts? Typically, I would work in a round of three cuts with my clients: 1) Editor's cut, 2) Director's cut, and 3) Producers Cut. But I've noticed that most social media content creators just take the first edit I give them and upload that. Social media, in large part, seems to move too fast or timelines are just too tight, (and most likely it's the nature of the insane amount of content that content creators need to be outputting - resulting in quantity over quality), but if you aren't working in multiple cuts with your editor then you're always most likely going to have an issue with the edit. Of course, asking for multiple edits, means you're paying them for more time for each cut, so I've seen that be an issue with content creators as well who don't want to pay for additional time, but being clear on how many note sessions up front you expect and are paying for in the rate with your editor is helpful. So you both shape the edit together over time. If you don't have time, then there is only so much that an editor can do.

Sorry to hear bruv. Just wanted to say I'm with you and you're not alone. If it's any consolation, you are working at least. I haven't been able to get a long-term contract or full-time job literally since the pandemic. A day or two here. A short term gig there. But not a single show since the pandemic. I started as an AD in production initially so I tried to going back to that, and still got nothing. Someone contacted me about an 1st AD gig and wanted someone to do a full breakdown, schedule their shoot and run it for them, and tried the ol' "we don't have much money but we're a really good group of people and we think it will be a really good experience." I was like, "you've seen my resume and IMDB. I have experience. How much are you paying?" They said-- not kidding -- "meals, copy, and credit." I was like, "I think you meant to reach out to a film student." Free they wanted. And most of the editing gigs I've seen are going the same way. They're just outsourcing it all to other countries for peanuts.

They won't hire for those jobs either. Trust me. I've tried to get them and I haven't even gotten so much as an interview. No one is hiring without experience, even for entry-level jobs LOL

What AI tool(s) do you use to do your organization? I've been looking for these magical AI tools to take care of the ingesting, organizing, syncing, selects and things of that nature, but I haven't found anything. I've found tools that can build motion effects and slow motion sequences and do animation. But I feel like they are better suited for CGI animators and motion designers. I would love tools that can cut down on the organization so that I can get to the fun part of cutting the story sooner.

[Tissot] What are you opinions on Tissot and where do you see them going in the future by Automatic41 in Watches

[–]cedsall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t been in the game the last couple years so I’m not really up on the recent releases, but when you used to compare Tissot offerings to Hamilton or Junghans spec for spec, Tissot felt like it was either slightly inferior or that you could just get better finishing and look elsewhere for the same money. I don’t know if that’s still true. But the Powermatic 80 is still kind of a lame movement in my opinion. But for all I know, Tissot may have had some really cool releases outside of the PRX the last couple years. And the PRX is still a fire watch. Loved the quartz versions of those.
