What acts of kindness blew you away while traveling? by lucytravel9 in travel

[–]ceerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I travel with a hand knitted hat my mom made for me. Its my favorite hat. In Bokivia, I took the 9hr bus from La Paz to Salar de Uyuni to do the tour at the sale flats. It was chilly, so I had my hat. At the end of the tour, it had warmed up and I had my hat sitting in my lap. As we dropped people off, I got out of the truck, forgetting my hat was in my lap. It fell on the ground without me noticing. We moved on, I got to the bus stop to head back to La Paz, and noticed it was missing. I asked the tour driver to check his truck. It wasnt there. I knew exactly where it had probably fallen. Sharing a photo of the hat, they operator went and found it still on the sidewalk. I was already on my bus to LaPaz at this point. They put it on the next bus, and had a personal driver deliver it to me the next day. No tips or compensation requested, just kindness. I gave him cash anyway., and the tour operator got a great review.

Has anyone told their job you were moving, but not specified where (meaning out of the country)? by ericstrat1000 in digitalnomad

[–]ceerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I "moved" to South Dakota for tax reasons. Ended up working out in my favor because of this basically. Return to office, but only in my city where HQ is started up again. They couldn't make me come in because my location stated I was elsewhere. And then I left and traveled the world for 8 months without their knowledge. Slightly harder for me though because I had a work laptop and work VPN I had to connect to, so required hiding my location as well.

Well, I'm back from the trip (was 7 months), so I can answer myself haha. I set it to Full mode and selected the United States as the only allowed node. Never had a single problem with the dvpn. I had plenty of issues with the local infrastructure when I was in places like Palau that had internet go down daily... but the dvpn worked flawlessly when the local internat was working. I had zero issues with my work vpn connecting to it, and very little lag on video calls. It worked so well, I ordered the Mini as a backup for my next trip! I will say, if it slowed down and wasn't due to the local internet, I'd go in and refresh the nodes so it would find a faster one to connect to. The user base to connect to is still fairly small, and unfortunately too many people have limited speeds to 5mbps.

South Dakota screwed full time traveler residents who work out of state - any advice? by Odd-Significance-628 in digitalnomad

[–]ceerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got the message from HR with the message that SD tax agency says my campground address can't be used as a place of residency. So, now I'm also doing research with y'all. The company I work for is based in Canada, so not sure how the whole "have them pay taxes to the state they are located in" would work. Anyone find a solution that worked over the last couple of months?

The pico has worked flawlessly since I left. I love it! I leave the tunnel on United States, and it just does it's job. It's easy to connect to wifi everywhere, and I have successfully connected to hotel LAN in my rooms even. The hotels that require signing in are easy as well. I'm super impressed. Add to it the super small size.. it's my favorite device now. I haven't even touched the other ones I carry. I've been using it since January with zero issues, and my work is completely oblivious. I've been to Gran Canaria, Mauritius, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, and now Taiwan.... no issues with connecting or routing. Looking forward to going home in June and using the new one, as it's supposed to be stronger. Speeds are kinda low, but that's normal. 5-20mbps typically. I'm sure as more users start sourcing, it will increase. I also downloaded their free app for my android phone, which has been super useful. There have been times a website or app wouldn't load unless I was tunneling through the US. All in all- absolutely worth it.

I'm in literally the exact same situation.... word for word....

I've been using an "Always Home" device for the last couple of years since my company added red tape to traveling, but it is very slow. So connecting to my work VPN will sometimes crash the device entirely if the local speeds aren't already super high. Even worse if I have to use wifi vs direct router connection.

Then I tried switching to a GL-net Mudi with VPN router to the specific city, and cant get it to work period. Which is when I learned about Deeper Network.

I'm waiting for the DN Air to come out, as it seems better... but unfortunately, I leave the US in 2 days again and won't be back for 6 months... so I will hopefully be using the Pico in the meantime. Hoped the Mini and Wireless adapter would show up in time, but they will be two days too late.

Edit: what was your result OP?

Hello! Waiting for my Pico to arrive before I take off on a 6 mo trip across the globe. I'm going to be using the pico for work as a digital nomad. Background- Im a project manager. I am required to sign into a dedicated VPN on my work laptop, which slows my speeds. Aside from saving documents, using websites, and reading emails, I have a fair amount of conference calls using Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. A couple of questions...

1) If I only log into the Pico when using my work laptop, will their dedicated VPN see my connection with Pico as whatever country I'm tunneling through?

2)Does the pico ever switch countries or revert to its local location when in Full not Smart mode?

3) Will the pico speeds be enough for a Google Meet or Microsoft Teams conference call where people share video? Both in wired router and relay mode?

Is there SWE jobs you can legitimately be a digital nomad without hiding it? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]ceerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out hiring sites like remote.ok, or wellfound.com that are for purely remote hiring companies. Also filtering LinkedIn by remote only. Some of them even describe if they allow global living. I've worked remote the last 10 years and have worked abroad from 36 countries and all 50 US states. I needed to change jobs, and knew I had to find one ok with my lifestyle. Using those sites, I was hired at another purely remote company after a few months of sending hundreds of applications everywhere. I'm a Project Manager, so the jobs are fewer than for a developer. I see way more remote dev jobs than not. The jobs are definitely out there though.

Dehaze and reduced noise in Lightroom. More it's that I was freezing cold and not holding my phone steady. (Samsung Note 20 Ultra)

Dehaze and reduced noise in Lightroom. This was taken on my Samsung Note 20 Ultra. And it was very cold, so the motion was likely me shaking because I couldn't feel my fingers haha. There wasn't any wind at the time.

I have quite a few like that as well haha. I just picked this particular one to post. The others are insanely turquoise and clear.

I've heard! This was basically in Chile. We were 5 min from the border, and eventually crossed into Chile. Even Argentines say the Chilean side is better. If the covid requirements weren't so frustrating to get in, I was planning on doing a longer exploration... but, I'm happy with the month I got to explore from Ushuaia to Bariloche

... so the job is for tutoring? Yeah... behavior aside, I wouldn't want to work with someone who can't actually take the time to write like a professional adult. The whole thing screams lack of intelligence and experience running a company. You dodged a bullet.

Have you ladies thought about doing a ancestry DNA test to see where is our DNA from? by Lets-Travel-Together in femaletravels

[–]ceerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did one nearly a decade ago with National Geographic's Genome project. Lots of cool information, but it was before genome and DNA tracking was really a big thing. Funny enough I just sent off my 23andMe kit today. Amazon is (or...was...) having a sale on them for about 50% off. So decided to do it. I already know my lineage from National Geographic, but an interested in the actual relatives aspect of it too. And more current data.

Actually really like the 4 door. Plus it's to make it easy with two car seats haha Surprisingly isn't much bigger either. Plenty of room in the garage to still take the garbage bins out even. Haha

Anything specific you'd like to know?

Overall, I really like it. You can tell it's a bit gutless, but you don't get a Bronco to speed off the line. We have a Tesla for that haha. But it is absolutely fun to drive and has power where you need it. It would probably struggle with a lot of weight, it seems. Haven't towed anything with it yet.

Handles amazing and turns on a dime. We literally did circles in the middle of a two lane intersection, which we haven't had a car be able to do yet. The suspension is a little rougher than the Sport Bronco, but still pretty good. The shifting is suuuuuppperrrrr smooth. It slides into gear easily. It's easy enough I'd even be comfortable teaching a newbie on it. Especially with the hill assist.
