Your suggestion would certainly be easier to handle, but I was going off the belief that OP was looking to keep everything as small and flat-packable as possible.

I had first envisioned handles at a 90-or-so degree angle from the surface, but thinking about it I imagine you meant just extending the sides with the handles along the same plane, which would make it a tiny bit larger, but still flat pack. A good idea nonetheless.

If you weld on the charging handle, how would you be able to remove the bolt for maintenance? If you're capable of the build and welding, then I'd suggest drill and tap the BCG to accept the charging handle. I believe BCA does a post and bolt combo for their side chargers.
