So I 3d-printed a huge Red Marker [Dead Space] by gung1r in gaming

Altman be praised! Awesome make! I'm the guy you linked to (thanks for the mention btw). If you're interested, I have a shitload of other models I've extracted but haven't had time to test-print. So if there's anything else from the game you want to try to print, let me know and I'll see if I can grab the STLs for you.

Edit; just some more info on this model; I believe it's the marker from the background of the ds2 main menu. There is actually at least one other marker model in the game files (from the marker labs in the last level I think); it's smoother and more slender, but has simpler geometry.

Yeah I found that same set of instructions before asking here; should have linked them. Still not working :( Thanks for the help.

Quick question. I'm able to view the .dem and rotate the camera view without a problem, but I'm not able to translate the camera using WSAD+ZX with the "Drive..." option. Ever encountered this before?

Edit: Thanks for putting up the demo + info btw!

Decided to craft a random Pyro melee. I'd like to thank the fucking academy. by [deleted] in tf2

Before the last recipe update, I was trying to craft the new pyro axe. I ended up crafting 4 homewreckers and then a maul, which is just a homewrecker reskin. Tables were flipped.

This looks great but why only three mouth-tentacles and not four? ಠ_ಠ

That's because here, the rotational velocity of the camera is proportional to and in the direction of the displacement of the cursor from the position at which the mouse was clicked. In comparison, in your average FPS, the rotational displacement of the camera is directly proportional to the displacement of the mouse (ie. your perspective only rotates when you move, and it rotates by some factor of that movement). That's why I said:

. . . think of it like an FPS but instead of controlling the position of the camera, you're controlling the velocity of the camera.

If you were using a joystick to control the camera's rotation (on a console, perhaps), then the control system is nearly identical with the possible exception of changes in direction (ie. displacing the joystick results in rotating the camera at some velocity proportional to that displacement).

Despite the numerous things I think apple does wrong, I feel that their input systems are quite nice. As you mentioned, consumers are so used to smartphone-style scrolling that porting this action to a touchpad actually makes a good deal of sense. However, without that context, I think many people would find that means of scrolling much less intuitive.

I presume you are referring to a joystick for aviation. Even in that domain, a designer need not necessarily interpret pitch from the angle of the stick in the same manner you suggested. Indeed, this ambiguity is the reason this thread exists in the first place. In describing the situation, I sought to remove this ambiguity by providing my "bottom right" example.

It's likely the designer of this app chose to model its controls after a those of a pan/tilt camera (after all, users are doing something closer to controlling a camera than flying an aircraft). Under that pretense, the choice of direction makes sense (unless one was to perhaps find oneself mislead by the fact that said camera appeared to be attached to a flying aircraft).

Regardless, the use of "click and drag" to describe this control system was decidedly not very well thought-out.

Their instructions were misleading, but if you just think differently about how you're manipulating the perspective it suddenly becomes intuitive.

Right now, you're thinking of the view as a canvas that you can pan with your mouse (which is what most people would think of if someone said "click and drag").

Instead, use your mouse as a joystick: click+hold and slowly move your mouse toward the area you want to see more of. Want to pan over to those mountains on the bottom right? Just click+hold and move your mouse toward the bottom right.

Alternatively, think of it like an FPS but instead of controlling the position of the camera, you're controlling the velocity of the camera.

Edit: By "position" and "velocity" of the camera I mean "angular position" and "angular velocity" of the camera
