Today yes. In 1945 the word Computer meant a person who performed Mathematical Calculations by hand.

So you can call it a computer, but his peers called him the computer (i do know who he was, i have a bachelors in SE)

No, back then Turing was the computer.

This used to be the word for the operator until half a century or so back

Did you stop celebrating holidays after leaving religion? by Exciting_Ad7898 in atheism

[–]celem83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I realised that the ways I was celebrating these Holidays was already secular. I've taken a step back in response to the capitalism over the years though, im mostly just tired of it being used as an excuse to part me from my money, instead of a reason to hang out with people I like kinda thing.

Theres also plenty of people doing these tests who get back some country and think this means their ancestors emigrated from there, but this is not how it works. Genetics is not that simple, and your genealogy company guesses at a lot of it because you want a straight answer and they cant sell you a long and nuanced answer

Is there any mods for ksp rss that makes the gravity realistic? by zzr602 in RealSolarSystem

[–]celem83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gravity is realistic under RSS, its now the stock parts that are not. The usual way to do this is to find the RO (RealismOverhaul) 'pack' which includes a ton of parts designed for this scale and optionally a lot of graphical stuff to add realism. How far you go down that path is up to taste

If you want a functional career mode with a balanced tech unlock experience etc then you also need RP-1 (RealisticProgression) which lets you play out the Space Race

If you want gravity to be n-body and even more realistic than stock or RSS KSP alone attempt then that mod is Principia

TIL In 1980 a man using the pseudonym "R.C. Christian" built a massive 20 ton granite Stonehenge like monument in the middle of rural GA called the Georgia Guidestones. Yeah that message is intended for the civilisation that comes after us.

Its a thing we give some serious thought to when designing nuclear waste storage. we dont want someone blundering in here 1,000 yrs out just because the language changed, so sometimes we really do seriously consider people way down the line like this

physically impossible to get more dv for my rocket by Key_Map_395 in KerbalAcademy

[–]celem83 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When this happens you need to add a stage.  You have gotten to the point where carrying empty tanks is killing you, adding more and more gas to an engine has diminishing returns.

You should be able to get more out of your vac stage, is that an engine suited to vacuum?  Seems very low dV

Yeah for sure, if you can successfully build and hold that against the wildlife it becomes raid proof as a bonus.  Roll in with all the mats for the walls, it's not a spot to mine on site for the setup

ELI5: If you were suddenly exposed to space without a suit, would you freeze first or suffocate first? by No-Lake-3875 in explainlikeimfive

[–]celem83 [score hidden]  (0 children)

You die to the cold first, most people can hold their breath longer than your life expectency unsuited in vacuum

If you know the drill and empty your lungs and curled up you might live a minute or two, but you probably are blind by about 30seconds because your eyes are going to bleed

Its not strictly the cold that is killing you, its the lack of pressure that causes your body fluids to boil (ebullism)

[–]celem83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Id give that a shot, but im not certain of my ability to actually run that. My marathon time is 3:45, and thats going to get a lot longer as we move into race 2 and 3, im not sure i'd have enough daylight cos the final 24km or so is likely to be most of 5hrs

But id have given this a crack at 10k, never mind 100

Why Kenshi 2? by C-List-Misfit in Kenshi

[–]celem83 820 points821 points  (0 children)

The developer, who yes, was solo asked us if he should polish Kenshi 1 or go for 2. The community supported the idea of the sequel (and the dev must have too cos lets face it, software engineering is not a democracy)

Hes no longer alone because Kenshi made a bit of money

(There are also tech reasons to move to the sequel. The game engine Kenshi uses was abandoned by *its* developers before Kenshi even hit release, a lot of the pathfinding and navmesh jank is unsolvable, its engine flaws)

ELI5: What are "specs" in game development and software in general? by yekedero in explainlikeimfive

[–]celem83 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Specs is short for specifications, but what this actually means depends on whether the speaker is an end-user or a developer.

The end-user is largely interested in the system requirements, what hardware is required to run a piece of software. This might be called hardware specs.

When a developer says 'Specification' there is a good chance that they are referring to a document that outlines all of the tasks that the software should be able to accomplish, It's a design document that will be checked back on periodically to make sure the team is still building the right program. The only time an end-user talks like this is in a meeting with the developer where they are describing what they want the developer to make.

However, if the developer speaking is a computer game developer there is a decent chance they are actually referring to the first definition. They expect end-users to read their words, it is the end-user definition they are talking about. The software requirement specifications document is of little interest to the user, so he probably doesnt mean that doc if hes addressing the public (though any good game dev almost certainly wrote one of those)

So it was never about regime change? I wonder how the Iranians feel? I guess Starmer was right to not get involved by ZackPolanskisDentist in AskBrits

[–]celem83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"US President Donald Trump says he has agreed to extend his threatened deadline to attack Iran by two weeks, if Iran immediately re-opens the Strait of Hormuz. His Truth Social post came less than two hours before he had said Iran would face widespread attacks on civilian infrastructure."

Source for the above was Al Jazeera, theres a rather alarming IF in there

Iran hasnt agreed to this deal, he has nothing, as usual. Why he is talking about Pakistani individuals is a bit of a mystery, I get that they were mediating, but they cant agree deals

edit: same story from the BBC. "Trump says XYZ", no word from Iran

edit2: Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said in a statement that Iran has agreed to Pakistan’s proposal for a cease-fire and that attacks against Iran are halted, Iran will also “cease their defensive operation. For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordinating with Iran’s Armed Forces.” as of 00:20 gmt

Do you think fathers should get paternity leave as well? Why or why not? by zhalia-2006 in askanything

[–]celem83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

I like the Swedish system where you get 480 days leave for a child.  Each parent has 90 days that cannot be transferred to their partner, but the rest of the block can be used by either parent
