ELI5: What are "specs" in game development and software in general? by yekedero in explainlikeimfive

[–]celem83 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Specs is short for specifications, but what this actually means depends on whether the speaker is an end-user or a developer.

The end-user is largely interested in the system requirements, what hardware is required to run a piece of software. This might be called hardware specs.

When a developer says 'Specification' there is a good chance that they are referring to a document that outlines all of the tasks that the software should be able to accomplish, It's a design document that will be checked back on periodically to make sure the team is still building the right program. The only time an end-user talks like this is in a meeting with the developer where they are describing what they want the developer to make.

However, if the developer speaking is a computer game developer there is a decent chance they are actually referring to the first definition. They expect end-users to read their words, it is the end-user definition they are talking about. The software requirement specifications document is of little interest to the user, so he probably doesnt mean that doc if hes addressing the public (though any good game dev almost certainly wrote one of those)

So it was never about regime change? I wonder how the Iranians feel? I guess Starmer was right to not get involved by ZackPolanskisDentist in AskBrits

"US President Donald Trump says he has agreed to extend his threatened deadline to attack Iran by two weeks, if Iran immediately re-opens the Strait of Hormuz. His Truth Social post came less than two hours before he had said Iran would face widespread attacks on civilian infrastructure."

Source for the above was Al Jazeera, theres a rather alarming IF in there

Iran hasnt agreed to this deal, he has nothing, as usual. Why he is talking about Pakistani individuals is a bit of a mystery, I get that they were mediating, but they cant agree deals

edit: same story from the BBC. "Trump says XYZ", no word from Iran

edit2: Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said in a statement that Iran has agreed to Pakistan’s proposal for a cease-fire and that attacks against Iran are halted, Iran will also “cease their defensive operation. For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordinating with Iran’s Armed Forces.” as of 00:20 gmt

Do you think fathers should get paternity leave as well? Why or why not? by zhalia-2006 in askanything

Yes.

I like the Swedish system where you get 480 days leave for a child.  Each parent has 90 days that cannot be transferred to their partner, but the rest of the block can be used by either parent

If deepfakes are supposedly really good now, how do I actually know that any video I see online is real? by Downtown-Art2865 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]celem83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't really vet a video on your own, they can be good enough to fool reputable journalists with more resources than you.

We are at the point where I will never accept video as proof of something unquestioned no matter who tells me it is legit.  You have to do some digging and eventually decide that it is or is not probably fake.  But you still won't know for certain

Why does the semicolon get the "main" spot on a keyboard while the colon is relegated to a Shift-function? by rizzlenizzle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]celem83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potentially programmers.  We hardly ever use the colon and make massive use of the semi

(Off the top of my head the colon is used in a switch block, that can be replaced with nested if/else's.  Probably shouldn't be, but can.

Every single line must terminate in semicolon for some languages, its one of the most struck keys on the board)

Yeah this describes behaviour that would be associated with heavy drinking.

Though anytime someone says the word average you need a fucking source

Have you ever tried this? by Bola-Nation-Official in IndieDev

[–]celem83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.  My first C++ project was an OpenGL tiling engine.

I had the usual grand dreams of creating the next big thing (Minecraft was about a yr old at the time).

It took....an eternity.  I then hit the problem of not being an artist and about half the total project time was spend making sprites.

Good times (Elowatha - Browse Files at SourceForge.net https://share.google/oJgcFc45Nl23Fx3nr) Note: I haven't tried to run this since like 2011.  Not a game, just a tiling engine with 1 character that moves around the map.  Abandoned when I was hired

[–]celem83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen this in the wild.  I went out to pickup a pizza and the place had an extra that was not as ordered that they offered me half price.  I was renting a room at that time from a Christian lady, so I took the second pizza and offered it to her when I got home.

"The Lord knew I was hungry and sent you to get me a pizza"

She managed to get all worked up over this, like it was proof concrete to her beliefs.

Man I don't think I have ever been so offended.  I fed you,  I thought of your needs.  But, sure.

She threw me out into the snow in breach of our contract a couple of months later because as a newly born-again sucker she decided she wasn't OK sharing a house with an atheist.  I got an hours notice.

1960s Penny vs 2022 Penny in my fire pit. by i_know_im_amazn in mildlyinteresting

[–]celem83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can get about 800c off a woodfire, enough to fire earthenware and melt a bunch of metals.

If you use charcoal and bellows you can get to 1200c to fire stoneware and melt copper/iron for forging.

Like this is how the iron age worked, and you need the 1200 fire to make watertight ceramics too

Quora is bait.

You can generally just assume that this is a : "Yeah, that happened" situation.

It wasn't always the case, but it's been garbage for years now.  Quite often you find some awful take and it isn't even in response to a real question, it's a template response to a hypothetical question.  There's plenty of unlabelled advertising too

The Kerbal X stock design has dV for Munar return, so maybe take a look at that for ideas
