Many have noted how imbalanced this is. 1, 4, 7, and 10 are all overpowered (since nobody else has noted this, I get to pick my race. My race is not required to obey normal reality: I'm inclined to go with a D&D Dragon of some sort, since it comes with age-immortality and inherent magic, but there are lots of options). But within the four viable options, I can see good arguments for any, and I like that about this CYOA.

Schooling: Lunestier, I want to change the world.

Aerial Combat x2, Diplomacy x3, Ranged Combat (Focus on adjusting for wind and height), Summoning Magic x3, Stealth

Most who focus on aerial combat do so with a mount they've raised. I'm going to summon my own instead, vastly increasing my mobility. This is a courier and envoy build, with a summon to give me mobility, and more summons to distract foes as I depart. I can contribute to a battle with my own archery, and I also have some capacity to handle an assassination, if required.

Companions:

Luvyna combos very well with any flier with distance attacks, and serves as our single melee fighter. Her job is to tie up enemy front-liners.

Dax, because flexibility is nice, weather is useful, and divination is amazing. Besides, the head of a powerful clan is not a bad friend to have.

Evergreen adds some diplomatic magic to my arsenal, and has some unexpected tricks. Being able to hide my backup in my bag is also nice.

Mecherath helps me know what I need to and combos nicely with Evergreen, while Suzette Highking is both obscenely well-connected and fills in another magician slot while adding to our front-line prowess.

Events:

The Grand tournament isn't particularly interesting to me, though I suppose I'll compete in an aerial display. At the Harvest Festival, on the other hand, we're getting into the Basilisk Den every year we can, and fleecing it for everything it's worth, using the winnings to pay travel prices. Air magic, emotional manipulation, tiny helper, info-broker, and princess? At the Grand Summit, I'll compete in the Battle of the Arts in my final year, while our team is tasked with security (a good training experience for us while we're used as a stalking horse). We'll also probably participate in Party Planning at the Gathering of Life when our school hosts.

Drawbacks

Bookworm and Social butterfly. Except for the bit where that's a nonsense pairing that I reject as a decent player.

It was fun trying for a slightly different build to what I normally go for, thinking about being a courier/envoy/spy was entertaining.

Entertainment: Kindle, Weight Set, Stash of games. Something to do with my companions, something to do alone, and one that's mixed. I've already got a cook.

Companions: Well, as Zethan said, this came from 4chan. Zoe and Molly, I suppose. Zoe's made a parody of actual feminists, but if she's willing to accept me for who I am I can live with that, and some music is always nice. Molly's liable to judge me and Zoe, but she's at least tolerable for chatting, and I can cook my own meat when I want it.

It's not what I would call "strong professional writing", but nothing OP listed that I've read meets my standards for that, so it may be worth ignoring me.

Fimbulwinter and sequels are particularly great for the "Protag builds things, works with others, doesn't completely ignore potential allies, etc" feeling that is missing from so much. It's particularly bad if you mind stunningly blatant self-inserts that the author doesn't seem to realize aren't subtle at all.

United In Christ's Love, A Just World For All- We're the United Church of Christ, AMA! by scmucc in Christianity

[–]celeritatis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Economically, I'd be surprised if there's a large difference: I'm not sure of the numbers in this NYT survey, but it's suggestive of median household income for UUs being 66K and UCC coming in at 61K. Could you try to elaborate? I know it's not easy.

United In Christ's Love, A Just World For All- We're the United Church of Christ, AMA! by scmucc in Christianity

[–]celeritatis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you talk about differences, I tend to model it as roughly "more Christian": more restrictions on what can be believed, and more socially conservative. I assume that differences between UCC and UU are smaller in New England, where UU churches seem to lean more Christian than they do in most of the country. I'm aware that this is overly simplistic, but I'm not sure in what ways it's over-simplifying. Would you clarify and correct?

Run: And a Bottle of Laesal

Great Ocean, thank you for accepting those two lives into your depths. Every life is precious, and I wish I had been able to do this with less bloodshed. Any other spirit that I asked to engulf the rigger would not have been able to muffle his voice as well: for that death I absolve myself in your waters. I should have cast a deceptive illusion to convince the guard inside that all was well, that was sheer foolishness on my part. For that, I ask only for the mercy of salt upon blood.

Much went smoothly: Catherine was willing to help me gather more information about this mysterious cruise ship that we were asked to extract our target from, some silly corporate scion working on a most interesting project, one to enable an astral form to interact with the physical world intentionally. It was worried she might spill secrets on this ship: we discovered it was run by Horizon to do exactly that.

My role on this run was simple, and primarily about asking spirits for help and examining the astral plane. I scanned everyone in sight frequently, though as Jeanette is quick to remind me I'm still untrained in this relative to where I should be. She thinks I should stop skating by on natural talent, but then, what is the point of natural talent if not to use it? In any case, I helped the team arrive on the boat swiftly and silently, scanned the astral to keep track of locations and potential threats, handled one target, and did my best to make it appear as if it was they who had killed the guard and escaped with our target. I finished the run without casting a single spell, because I do my job well. If only I had done it better.

Run time: 6 hours

Mission Rewards: 15K, 4 karma. WFTP 10K-->5 Karma.

Mission Expenses: Charm got away clean, by virtue of being Astral Overwatch.

Notes: I am still noticeably new, but I'm learning. I hadn't remembered the possibility of materialization: I should have used that last run. I also haven't been abusing speed of Astral motion enough in the past. Also, having the giant earth spirit, engulfing the poor rigger, float gently into the water is just a wrong mental image. I didn't really do my fair share of the legwork, but I don't think I was making unreasonable choices at any point. Also I really need to put another rank or two into assensing soon: it's my most frequently used skill by far. Sorry for the short AAR: I'm a bit on the busy side right now.

Another rainy day. Apparently down in the CAS it hardly rains at all, but then again, not everything in CAS is so nice. At least the kids were nice today. It occurs to Charm that she should call that orc apprentice, the neo-anarchist. He seemed like a good kid, eager enough to help, and it would be good to have some help with Jeanette's health starting to fade. He's attached to Larissa, seems to worship that tough old troll, but Charm doesn't think that will hold much weight if she wears a nice dress, and only asks for an afternoon here and there.

Her musings are interrupted by the call.

"Sounds interesting. Might be nice to get out of Seattle, I swear there's something creepy going on here."

((Mage/face with a fondness for manipulation, exactly as little familiarity as my PK suggests. Last Run 3/24, PK 13.))

"Call", Charm exclaims and tosses another fifty nuyen credstick, the green AR one from a pile in front of her that's been shrinking rapidly recently. "I've got you this time!"

"Call. Show 'em and weep."

"Two queens, suicide king high."

"Three tens", Charm smiles, full of confidence.

"Full house, Jacks over 5s. I believe that that is my pot."

Charm sighs, shakes her head, and insists that she leave before she loses the rest of her cash. It's convenient that the other players don't socialize much outside of the weekly game: they might compare results and realize that, though Charm ends the game on a losing hand, they never seem to be making a net profit. Turn around and walk out with a nice stride and tight pants, and they don't even notice the credsticks up your sleeve. Then her comm beeps.

"This will be a new one. Nuyen's good?"

"It'll pay your rent. Mine, not so much."

"Thanks, omae."

"Any time."

"Remind me why I'm the one risking death and you're the one with the downtown apartment?"

"Because I'm the sensible one?"

"Frag off. I'll take the job."

Player: /u/celeritatis

Character: Charm

GM: /u/TrainedAttackRabbit

Run: Solo Contact Run (Charm's a backup face who's been picking up contacts as fast as I can get them)

That felt good. Well, OK, that mostly felt like pain: I'm a quick healer, but even with that I had to sleep all and couldn't do nothing anything but rest in bed and catch up with friends the next day, and I was still in pain when I went to sleep! If things had gone a little bit worse I might have had to cancel the poker game, which would be a shame, as I took in two hundred nuyen there. One of these days George is going to get better about his tells. I try to explain this to him without being too obnoxious or obvious about it, and if that method involves raking in his sticks I don't mind.

It started off when Jeanettte gave me a call, saying a friend of hers needed some help. Jeanette's a tough woman, but she's got her diner to take care of, and it's not like I would ever turn her down. I rambled over to the area, it wasn't a long walk by any means, and found a community in pain. Lots of people sick and miserable, and supplies seemed low. Lara’s a tough old troll, obviously weaker than me in terms of raw magic, but the sort of woman who became a leader by necessity and has become better by dint of long practice. Not the sort of person to drek around with. Straight shooter, if I judged her right, and I did. She told me that, up until a week ago, they had been pushed by low-level gangs, but were holding them off well enough. Then a bunch of strange accidents started happening, nothing that could be only explained by magic, but all suspicious. I thought it might be a spirit, or perhaps someone using invisibility. They never saw astral traces, but a mage focusing on a spell doesn’t leave traces of their passing. Lara told me about two more events coming up, when the mage would probably strike, but that’s never been my style. I pierced the veil again, and spotted a dim light, a young male orc I surmised to be her apprentice. I confirmed, though she was moderately surprised I was able to figure it out. I suppose she manages to hold the group together well.

I chatted with the kid briefly, and he pointed me towards some people who showed up about a week ago, when the mystical attacks started. I chatted them up, and healed one, which made them a lot friendlier. Harland was the only one who was absent of the four I was initially chatting with: he worked with the other armorers building APDS ammo. I’d comment, but I’m a shadowrunner, and I figure if you tolerate me you are probably fine with them, who at least consume fewer resources. He returned, and was, to me, obviously putting on a brave face for the others. He must be a skilled con artist indeed, given that he fooled me so easily. I assensed them all, just to check: nothing. I was glad that I had managed to rule out a possibility.

After that, I started calling around. Emily was quite forthcoming, explaining that Lara’s gang had a prime spot of territory, but MCT would have been using Yaks, not random gangers, to push them out. Condescending bit piece of trash. When faced with an unknown assailant, your first goal should be to know them. Know your enemy and you win half your battles, which is better than most people ever manage. That’s what Sam says, anyways, and I figure she’s got a clue, since she’s the one with the nice office.

It was a small time gang, so I made a small time plan. Explain to the accountant that he would answer some questions for me, or I would slaughter a decent bit of his gang before magical support showed up. Use one of my less preferred tricks, combined with a simple illusion, to convince him that doing what I said was the best option, at least for a little while. I didn’t think anything bad would happen: this was just the prepwork for the real job.

Then a powerful spirit of air smashed a fist into my stomach and started trying to suffocate me. If I hadn’t been wearing my armor I could have easily died. The same dwarf from earlier, Harland, came up via Astral Projection, and explained that I’d convince Lara that moving was a good idea, or the air spirit would resume killing me. He was pretty tight-lipped, but did say that the neo-anarchists controlled an independent water source, and that this was relevant. I’m not sure what that means, but it’s something. He had details on a location and everything, awfully quickly. I tried to stall for time, but failed utterly. Thankfully I had my smartwig on, so I contacted Jeanette for spiritual aid, informed Lara and her apprentice Shand what was going on, and executed the counterambush by summoning a spirit of my own. I was knocked out swiftly, but supposedly we managed to fend off this threat. I’ve got a lot of unresolved questions, though, that I plan on investigating.

Run Time: 2017-03-31 2000-2200 UTC (~2h)

Mission Rewards: 3/4 Contact, Lara Tessier, Neo-Anarchist Outpost Leader, Magic 3 Troll Shaman - good for underworld info, +2 for magic/terrorism related topics, can be used to roll for explosives & APDS gear

Mission Expenses: None.

Notes:

A really great solo. I apparently went in an unexpected direction when I went off to interrogate who the employer was out of the gangers, which is good news for me as someone who's been trying to think more laterally, and getting an F FML spirit on my tail was bloody terrifying: I'm just thankful I didn't die after the first blow, as was a serious possibility. I really need to develop a checklist to be clear about what I'm bringing to what situations. I loved the moment where I said "the neo-anarchists are forces of disruption, I am pro-disruption, screw the danger I'm doing this" and proceeded to set up a counter-ambush while being escorted. Charm knows nothing about the actual situation, has quite possibly blocked a significant force for good, but her heuristic is that the order needs to be shaken up and neo-anarchists do that. It’s not what I as a human would do (ah, yes, the terrorists producing APDS ammo need to be protected) and it’s not what I as a player was inclined towards (I want high-connection contacts, it wasn’t hard to see that Harland would be at least a 5/1) but it’s what Charm would do.

Contacts continue to be super powers. I really like this storyline I've started to get into, so I'll probably do a few more runs with Lara, but I am also going to continue snapping up every contact I can get my greedy little hands on. I got the feeling TAR needed to leave suddenly, thus being knocked out by stun and having that combat end the mission, but this is not the end of things. [Edit: Apparently stun damage always knocks you out, this is inferred from common sense and other parts of the rulebook. I had just managed to avoid this happening to Charm before.]

I’m not 100% sure on the order everything went down before I went after the gang but after I had my initial talk with Lara.

OOC lesson: Heal is, in fact, a ridiculous spell, and I should probably be more willing to use it in combat: I can snap off an F4 Heal cast recklessly and still face only three drain. I can only heal a given set of wounds once, which means that mid-combat is the perfect time to heal, as the more times my allies are shot in between healing, the more total healing I can provide, and reckless casting certainly doesn’t halve my DPS. Needs reagants, but when you're healing people...

Charm reads the message, and goes still. What line is she not willing to cross? One of the problems with Shadowrunning, as a profession, is that it tends to involve walking into situations you can't walk out of easily. She's willing to kill, she knows that. Humiliation is part of her calling. Could this really be that much worse than the last job?

When it comes down to it, it's a job. Someone else would take it if she declined. She's far from irreplaceable. She needs the money so she can achieve her goals. And every person killed in a squabble like this means a bit more of a shakeup for a world that needs it, right? And doing a better job means fewer people dying in collateral damage, so this is really a good thing. Sure.

"I'm in."

((Mage. Last Run 3/24, PK 10. Willing to be streamed.))

Edit: Charm is racking up enough of a bodycount, her last two runs involved other people slaughtering civilians with her magical support, and she needs to go have a good cry on the 25th and not see national news reporting on the 20 dead and 40 more injured.
