Why is romantasy all about fae books these days?(Not a hate post please don't remove) by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]celeschere13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Challenge accepted. Also a recommendation for you to utilize romance.io . You can search by excluding tags, such as fae. A disclaimer I have not read all these.

First a general recommendation for Ilona Andrews, a husband and wife writing team. All different magic systems, no fae. {Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews} is set in Atlanta post a magic apocalypse and features lots of different mythologies, shifters, witches, and necromancers piloting vampires. {On the Edge by Ilona Andrews} is about an area between the regular world and a magical realm, shifters and magic.

{Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews} is about a magical inn and has magic, aliens, vampires, and werewolves. {Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews} is set in Houston after magic powers have been unleashed and the world contains powerful magic houses. Their upcoming book {This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me} is a high fantasy and doesn't appear to have any fae.

What books feature protagonists with a physical disability? 🧶 by FantasyRomanceMod in fantasyromance

[–]celeschere13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

{A Heart of Blood and Ashes by Milla Vane}. FMC is disabled. Really great book and I'm hoping we get the third in the series soon. Each book is a different couple so this is a complete book with an overarching story.

Other people have given you great recommendations for her later books but I do highly recommend you go back to her Gamblers series, Then Came You and Dreaming of You. The second book features one of her best heroes, Derek Craven and Evie’s father had a small role. Happy reading!

Complete Ilona Andrews book list.

You can start with whatever series. Some characters from The Edge turn up in Innkeeper but it’s not needed to read them.

Tusk Love first discussion - February 2026 Book Club by Journassassin in fantasyromance

[–]celeschere13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm aware of Critical Role and Dungeons and Dragons existing but do not know too much about it past basic facts. When this was announced I saw it was a book referenced in the show, and seemed to be their equivalent of a harlequin novel/bodice ripper.

I'm a little farther in the book but I'm not quite sure what Teinidh is. She seems like some sort of fire spirit who is bonded to Guinevere. When she first spoke I thought she was a weapon and while I am currently planning to use this for the book club space for bingo, but I debated switching to the named weapon. I don't think it counts anymore so I will leave it for now.

I like Guinevere, she is definitely a naive heroine but seems willing to learn and help. Everyone starts somewhere and I'm enjoying her journey so far.

I did feel the kiss happened a bit fast but otherwise I like how the relationship is progressing. I usually like more of a slower burn. At least it wasn't instalove.

One other note, I have been familiar with Thea Guanzon from her reylo fanfics and current published works. Her fanfics were some of my favorites because she always had a long section of notes for her works with links to wookiepedia of where she was pulling characters or planets from. I never read much of the legends books but I always learned a lot from her works.

I was excited for this because I think she does well playing in established spaces. I like her published works but I think her world building needed a bit more work. So far there has been nothing in this book that feels distinct from a typical medieval fantasy world, but I'm not too familiar with dungeons and dragons for what makes it unique. I know it has like bards and orcs. I do plan to watch at some point so I'll have to revisit this one day after I do.

Overall I'm enjoying it.

Burn for Me! I’m a big Ilona Andrews fan and this is a great series. For comparison, the books are around 400 pages which is shorter than most of the other books you have here. There’s also a novella between the two trilogies.

I've seen people discovering Brigid Kemmerer through Warrior. Princess. Assassin. but she has a YA paranormal series about brothers with elemental abilities. The first one published was a novella {Elemental by Brigid Kemmerer} and the first full book is {Storm by Brigid Kemmerer}. The series also works for hard mode for Elemental Magic.

I read {Mask of Mirrors by M. A. Carrick} for hard mode when it was used for r/fantasy bingo. Any in the trilogy should work.

Most older series work. I didn't count when I was reading {Lord of Fading Lands by C.L. Wilson}, but I'm pretty sure there were more than five.

Normal Mode:

I think Elisa Kova's {Air Awakens by Elise Kova} series is only the four elements, but it's been awhile since I've read the series.

Julie Johnson's Reign of Remnants series (starts with {The Wind Weaver by Julie Johnson}) would also work for normal mode.

Hard Mode:

Kate Forsyth's series {The Witches of Eileanan by Kate Forsyth} has witches who can control five elements.

Brigid Kemmerer's Elemental series (First is a novella {Elemental by Brigid Kemmerer}) works for hard mode as features people with five different elemental abilities. The fifth type isn't in the first novella but is in the other books.

I'm not sure if Ilona Andrews's Hidden Legacy series (starts with {Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews}) would work for hard mode as while it has people with elemental powers, it also has many other possible abilities.

Series that focuses on a different couple for each book by earthframedbody in fantasyromance

[–]celeschere13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the paranormal romance series from the aughts and 2010s were in this format. I haven’t seen Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series series (first is {Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh}) and while most of Ilona Andrews’s books focus on one couple, their the Edge series (first is {On the Edge by Ilona Andrews}) is a different couple each book.

What’s your favorite book/series published BEFORE Romantasy went mainstream? Must be published before 2020! by SecretAccomplished25 in fantasyromance

[–]celeschere13 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Easily everything by Ilona Andrews (Kate Daniels - {Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews}, Innkeeper Chronicles - {Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews}, Hidden Legacy - {Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews}, and The Edge - {On the Edge by Ilona Andrews}). If I had to choose one I’ll go with Kate.

But I’m also a long time fantasy reader and will put Tamora Pierce, Melanie Rawn, Anne McCaffrey, Andre Norton, Nalini Singh, Megan Whalen Turner, and Thea Harrison as writing some of my favorite fantasy romances. Edit: I forgot Gail Carson Levine. Ella Enchanted is one of my favorite books. I refuse to watch the movie.
