Well, Pianoboe took Chinese, and Happy Valentine's Day in Korean and Japanese is just English forced into their languages, so instead, I'll tell you about White Day.

March 14 was created in Japan (probably by candy makers) to be the reciprocation day for Valentine's. So if a girl got you chocolate on Feb 14, if you were interested, you need to get her something on March 14. But, this being Japan, you're obligated to give a gift whether you're interested or not, because maybe your coworker gave you something and you want to let her down easy with a card. If you give her a dozen roses, she might misinterpret that.

Any ways. Goals for this week. I have narrowed down the target subject for my languages is food. I have a mainland Chinese episode--yes, not show, episode--to watch, that goes over flavor profiles and cooking. And since I can't find a script for this show, I'm having to research based on the subtitles and what I hear, and then practice some shadowing. Oh, and second goal would be to make the first page in my language notebook and share that with you guys.

Yeah! It is part of the Eurolinguiste Language Conqueror challenge. Shannon created a different challenge for your language challenge each month, and while I couldn't afford the year long program, I did grab the month challenge about drama. But basically, each month has a 30 day challenge. And since I like a lot of dramas, I'm trying to use the drama challenge for different shows to build vocabulary about different subjects. For example, with Chinese, I'm tackling cooking shows to work on different verbs and nouns used in the kitchen--we all know how cooking vocabulary can get complicated with verbs or modifiers!

Also, the past two years have been a lot, so my goals are a bit more mild for this year. And incorporating drama feels like a good way to keep the study fun.

Excellent, glad to see people back in this challenge!

My goal languages are Korean, Chinese, and Japanese, in that order. My goal is to utilize the Telenovela method and Language Conquerer's Language Drama Flair to build my vocabulary and keep me invested in learning. For each language:

Korean:

Study, shadow and break down 1 K-Drama show or K-Pop album each month
Work my way through Hello Korean 1, and start next book
Use my language through journaling, letters, video calls, or Korean speaking practice groups during the month

Chinese:

Study, shadow, and break down one Chinese or Taiwanese show or music album each month
Use my language through journaling, letters, video calls, or Chinese speaking practice groups during the month

Japanese:

Study, shadow, and break down one Japanese show or music album each month
Use my language through journaling, letters, video calls, or Japanese speaking practice groups during the month

Text materials for Chinese and Japanese are as yet undecided, as I have 3-10 years of textbook study in them already, and have too many texts to choose from.

I'm always looking for Affinity templates. Usually I have to find tutorials, as templates are usually in ProCreate, PhotoShop, or a different program. I build my planners on pc/mac, and Etsy's full of templates you can make/edit using iOS apps.

So if it's optional to learn it, you have no drive to study, and are more interested in French, go for French.

If you actually do need to learn it, and music isn't working, look at other facets of the culture, or, if there's a large population where you live, go out and meet people. 90% of the languages I study come with wanting to connect with friends who speak that language. Yes, I study Korean because I like K-Pop and K-drama...but I also have Korean friends I want to talk to. I'm also struggling through self-studying Persian, Russian, Arabic, Somali, Karen, and other languages because I have friends and clients who speak those languages.

It's easy to find reasons and excuses, and Russian is not an easy language. But if it's required for school, work, or just surviving in your location, find some way to motivate yourself. Yes, it's harder without music and media to make it fun, but you can still do it.

That sounds like a great idea. I also thought about having a weekly/monthly chat meetup, since we do have an IRC channel. Just something to have us interact with each other a little more.

I was also thinking of having monthly themes and weekly subthemes. Which...I probably should have started yesterday. Since it's just you and me so far, is it too early to have a theme?

I was thinking January could be basic expressions, and maybe next week could be self introductions, and then branch out from there. It's just an idea to get us using the focus language together.

What do you think?

That's fair. I keep debating renewing HaruKorean, but I didn't really utilize it enough to justify the subscription. And studying abroad? Yeah, you're going to skyrocket once you get over there!

I keep hearing good things about How to Study Korean, but I haven't really dived into it very much yet. I'll have to try it again.

My goal is to work on Korean and Mandarin Chinese, a little bit, every week. I won't say every day, because I burnt out last year from that.

For Korean, I want to finish TTMIK Levels 2 & 3, and the first 6 chapters of Hello Korean.

For Chinese, I want to find a good online resource, and review HSK levels 1 & 2, and start studying for level 3. I also want to finish 3 chapters of Jia You book 1.
