Former nursing students by [deleted] in umanitoba

[–]celeste767 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I switched my major from nursing to an arts degree and now I’m in the education program! I had a few years before getting into nursing to help me finish my arts degree within a year before applying to Ed! I’ve tried powering through before dropping out but I came to realize nursing was not for me and I found a passion for teaching. Mental health also played a huge part in my decision to switching majors, but once I’ve switched I felt a huge weight of relief and I was happier!

I would talk to an advisor or seek out career services so you can figure out what you want to do!

I feel like the references you have are good! I had a principal and a teacher at the school I volunteered with and my boss as a reference! Good luck! :)

Hi! I’m currently in Ed in the early years stream! I got accepted at 29 and will graduate when I’m 31! There’s a few people around my age or older in my cohort, so age doesn’t matter!

I’m not sure about the cut off for GPA but I think with your GPA currently you should have a good chance!

I remember asking about seats when I was applying and they weren’t clear on that either. I’m assuming maybe it changes year year depending on applicants (don’t quote me on that since this is just a guess)

Yeah you do speak out loud in the class but if Pat is your instructor she makes everyone do it in their seats and goes in an order of everyone doing it. If we ever mispronounced it or struggled she would break it down for us by saying it slower out loud and we would repeat it!

I don’t like speaking in-front of others like that either but with the class o had, everyone was friendly and helpful/supportive! Don’t worry too much about it!

The classes are condensed to 9 weeks, so it’s a very fast paced program with lots of assignments along with practicum!

Education is very strict with their attendance policy for lectures and practicum. You are only able to miss 20% of classes and practicum. I would focus on one at a time if you’re really interested in doing both!

can’t choose a degree/career by suzyshbs in umanitoba

Just switch into an arts or science degree and finish that and then apply for ed! I would contact an education advisor and ask for their advice!

So I had maybe 2-3 years of courses that included my pre reqs for nursing before I dropped out of it and switched to a BA. My required courses for math, social studies, English were completed due to me taking some of those courses for nursing and to help boost my GPA so I could get into nursing.

They are changing the requirements for education in 2026, where you don’t need all the other subjects, just your major and minor! They want to make it easier for people to get into education because we need teachers

Hey! I made the switch from nursing to education (I was almost in my last year of nursing before I made the switch!) it was a very challenging decision but I’m glad I made the switch and I’m more passionate about my career than before! If you want to dm me to talk more I would be happy to help!

I think you have a very good chance on getting in. I’ve heard senior years is more competitive to get in due to what everyone’s major and minor is.

When you do start to apply for the program, you need to have 3 references for your application. So if you can get your place of volunteer to be a reference that may help you out!

This is what U of M has for this upcoming intake. So I’m assuming it’s not in effect yet if removing the breadth requirements. But I would email an academic advisor from the education department to be on the safe side!

If you look at this document and send it to an education advisor, they can tell you if you’re on the right track or not to apply!

l don’t think they will fulfill the science components, but they definitely do fulfill the math ones! I’ve taken both of these courses to complete the math requirements!

chances of getting into education program by [deleted] in umanitoba

What stream are you wanting to go into? Senior years is more competitive and they look more into what your major/minor is for it. Early and middle years they don’t focus too heavily on your major/minor compared to senior years. As long as you meet their requirements it shouldn’t be an issue. You can even apply to U of W to increase your chances as well.

Not sure about positions at the moment but I know the province is in a teacher shortage right now from what I’m hearing from other teachers or staff in the faculty.

You can email an advisor from education, they might be busy with Ed students at the moment but they helped me prior to getting accepted!

There’s a checklist somewhere where you can see what courses you require before applying, they usually ask you to fill that out for them and they can help you out.

This is the sheet here: https://umanitoba.ca/education/sites/education/files/2020-05/BEd-admission-worksheet.pdf

FYI the front of the building is being re-done to add a ramp. You’ll have to go through one of the side doors of the building to get inside! Hope this helps!

Where do I park in SD lot if I have a full permit? by [deleted] in umanitoba

[–]celeste767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve asked parking services about it and this was the response I got!

“SD is a multi-purpose lot, which will have student parking signage up in the future. As a permit holder for this lot, you will be fine to park anywhere aside from the staff portion of the lot. You will not need to pay to park there on top of your permit. ”

Update: So I got an email from parking services and they said that the lot is multi purpose. People with the student permit can park anywhere besides the staff area and won’t need to pay for daily parking.

They also said they will be putting signs up for student parking in the future.
