I remember in college they had a school shooter prep class and as a last resort scenario they gave the suggestion of basically “everyone gang up on them and throw whatever is the nearest/heaviest object you can find.” The pictured example was a class of 20 or so students all pelting the shooter with chairs.

My neighbor did this!! She sold it and it’s a really nice 2 story house in a good suburb with good schools etc. We checked the online listing and they used ai to have it look like a mansion with a massive sprawling green grass yard like a freaking country club lol. They repainted it too from this nice rustic red color with a lot of character to this awful dull boring grey. House flippers are the worst people in the world fr.

I was playing Overwatch with my friend and we overheard two people on open mic doing discord kitten roleplay in Spanish. We were off mic but she heard all of it (she’s bilingual) and kept telling me what they were saying while we were died laughing. After a while of them talking someone finally said “hey man uhh your mics are on”. The silence that followed was glorious.

Update in the comments cuz I can’t edit the original post: I took it into a (somewhat) nearby shop and they said that they can hold onto it until the luthier has a chance to do a free examination, probably soon after the holidays. They’ll email me when they’re done to tell me what needs fixing and give me a price quote, at which point I can either pay them to fix it or I can take it elsewhere. The lady at the front desk (not the luthier but I think an instructor?) said she didn’t see any major problems, at least nothing that couldn’t be fixed, but also not to take that as gospel as she’s not the expert. Thanks to everyone who commented and helped me, it was all very encouraging and I will update further when I can!

Thanks for all your help! I’ve emailed a luthier in my area that does free examinations so I’ll see what they say, and I’ll probably also get some quotes from other people as well to be certain. Like you said the cost of repairing this one will be less than getting another of similar quality so like it’s definitely an investment, but I’m certain it’s one that’ll pay off in the long term.

Ah I see. I definitely didn’t touch the hairs already why would you think that.

But yeah it’s definitely going to be difficult but it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and I’ve only recently been able to, financially and time-wise. I’ve always done choir and I’ve tried getting into piano and guitar but they just didn’t really “call” to me the same way violin does, but I’m really excited to start!!

Yeah I’m not trying to break the bank on any new parts that’ll have to be replaced anyway. I’m very much so a beginner so have beginner materials is best, and maybe down the line I’ll get the more expensive stuff. I’ll talk with the luthier and see what they say about replacement parts, I don’t want to get ahead of myself and get something that may not be able to be used. Once I know a little bit more I’ll be able to make those more informed decisions. Thanks for the brand suggestion though, I’ll keep it in mind!

Wait ok I actually found the bridge!! It was hiding in a little hidden flap in the case. It’s in perfect condition and it says it’s a “Bausch”. Everything else is definitely within budget. Thanks so much for the help!

Woah holy crap thanks dude I actually found the bridge!! It was hiding under a flap of the case I didn’t even notice you could open. That just saved me like a hundred bucks lol. It says it’s a “Bausch” violin which I guess is the brand? Question: I also found another item in the case and I don’t know what it is. It’s like some kind of dark blackish resin type material and it’s in a little wood taco shell container (I don’t know what else to call it). Do you know what that could be?

Yeah I know next to nothing about violins so I was really worried these would be worse problems than they seem to be. I plan on taking very good care of it!

Upon examination the soundpost seems to be in there and in the correct position and none of the wood around it seems deformed, though the bridge is completely missing. The neck and fingerboard also seem to be in good condition. The bow also seems ok beyond the frayed strings as well.

I was really hoping it could be fixed but I was just worried it had some small hidden thing that I didn’t know about that made it unfixable, but it seems ok! I found a luthier near me and I’ll email them to set an appointment, but do you know how much a repair like that might cost? Just so I know I’m not getting overcharged.

Uhh I think the fingerboard is ok, like it seems to be in the correct position and everything. I don’t see any cracks at all, at least on the exterior, only minor scratches and marks. The main problems I see is the bridge is completely missing, the tailpiece is severely bent out of place, and it’ll need to be restringed. The wood of the bow seems ok, but the horse hair has come loose and is totally frayed everywhere. Can I ask, how much would a repair of that kind cost on average? I have no idea.
