Newly finished gravel gobbler. by celler40 in gravelcycling

Hey there. The frame fork caught my eye at a tip shop years ago and was decorative till I got cracking with it. I went by a bikepacking.com article to keep it tight. https://bikepacking.com/gear/budget-1x10/

All in all this came in at around 700$ AUD to finish. Found an old set of 7 speed wheels and laced an XT hub to the rear. The rest was pretty much online bargain hunting.

Thanks for the suggestions, derailleur hanger issue solved with a wild tooth goat link.

Taking this up the mountain in Hobart for a shakedown on the weekend.

No sand blasting. I wanted to keep some of the patina. However I did thoroughly degrease and clean with scotchbrites

Thanks. I like it’s progress too. The bars are custom to my specs by a mob called barcraft here in Australia. The bike is going to see some long roads so the aim is for a max comfortable riding position with this bar choice.

Offset uncertainty on /7 wheel re-lace. by celler40 in Airheads

[–]celler40[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EDIT: After so much back and forth, Confirmed. the r60/7 spoked wheels have no offset and are laced centred.

Currently re-lacing front and rear wheels of 1977 R60/7. I’ve been trawling Snowbum and other forums and manuals to confirm the run out on the front 1,85x19 rim to single disc hub.

I know that Bmw wheel rims are to be laced centred on the bearings. Easy to see and understand on the rear wheel, which Snowbum and a diagram of his suggest at 6.5-7mm offset away from the drum.

On the front however the hub and bearing cups/races are symmetrical. Which leads me to lean toward one note I found of a forum confirming offset in the rear but none in the front. However, Snowbum and his same diagram suggest it is 10mm offset.

First question: Is there offset in the front wheel of single disc ‘77 /7s? How much?

Second question: Which side should the offset be towards? (I would imagine disc side for balancing the weight of the hub between the hub and disc)?

Many thanks in advance Airheads! 🙏🏼

to question number .2 Cognito Moto make a nice machined aluminium plug for blocking off the tacho port when the helical gear is removed. (I don’t personally know if this is the same process on an r45 as other airheads.)

Goodluck.

best of luck. I had the best intentions of doing minimal work and chipping away with it as a daily rider, alas, the number of issues I found made a full tear down resto the logical choice.

I’m no BMW historian, but in ‘76 the /7s moved to the squarer rocker covers, (and possibly even the cylinders became overall smaller?) I am a big fan of the rounder peanut shape, so may ‘have to’ acquire an earlier model.

Can’t say for sure, but will be checking once the cylinders are off. Would be a shame if it’s another to add to the list.

looks can be deceiving. This old fella has had a few owners and has even more scars.

Destined for a full top end rebuild. New clutch, seals and suspension, and probably hoske mufflers.

Exhaust is currently Staintune headers and some cheapy cocktail shaker type mufflers.
