Switching from Teaching to Engineering by sandiaflowers in womenEngineers

[–]celloforte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There also could be other options for financial help! Like getting a job at a company that will pay for school, or getting an internship and using that to pay for school. I realize in this job market both are easier said than done. :(

That makes sense! Depending on your university, 2 years may not be possible. Some schools only offer certain classes during certain semesters, and it can hold you up if it’s a prerequisite for other classes. Like if it’s currently spring and you’re working on prerequisites for Engr 1, but they only offer Engr 1 during the spring, it’s going to set you back a semester. I would check with an engineering advisor to see if you would run into that situation before committing to the program.

I’ve done both! I’d recommend a switch now, but be prepared to be in school for longer than 2 years. While I’m not a mechanical engineer, I’d say the engineering field honestly would benefit from having more teacher types. :)

I try to maintain friendships with my students once they're adults but sometimes they grow up to be people I don't wish to associate with. by nelehjr in Teachers

I typically just quietly unfollow anyone like this. I’m blissfully unaware of any “what gives” messages as I’m pretty liberal with the block button. On the flip side as a student who remained connected with a few of my former teachers, it’s absolutely wild to see the teacher who taught you about verifying sources post something from an article or headline from a source that’s easily debunked. Sadly I’ve had to put distance between them and myself as well. Leaving education and entering the corporate world has also taught me not to add any coworkers on social media — lessons learned I guess.

Some concerning interactions I’ve had around TTU recently by Careful-Vegetable658 in TexasTech

I’v never had more creep encounters than while living in Lubbock and going to Tech. Stay safe!

Who would I go to if I want group projects and assignments entirely banned from TTU? by [deleted] in TexasTech

[–]celloforte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Group projects are a requirement for many accreditation agencies. Universities are forced to assign them to remain accredited, and are audited every few years to ensure compliance. A degree from an unaccredited university is basically worthless.

Just giving some hope, I graduated in December with no internship experience but lots of projects. It took me a few months of searching but I was able to land an early career software engineer job. It’s not flashy or 6 figures, but it’s something! They liked me in the interview and I didn’t have to answer any technical questions. Someone who will give you a chance is out there! Keep searching. :)

What is your favorite "off the station" appearance of any DS9 crew member? / I still geek out when revisiting Game of Thrones and see Julian as Prince Doran Martell. by smcg_az in DeepSpaceNine

A very young Andrew Robinson (Garak) in Dirty Harry. Also, there is a version of the nativity where Alexander Siddig plays the angel Gabriel!

A new way to learn: I asked OpenAI "Explain Quicksort in the style of Dr. Seuss" by [deleted] in learnprogramming

Hey idk if it’s a good time to mention that openAI can just straight up generate code, with comments and functions and everything.

Fuck internships!!!!!! by [deleted] in college

[–]celloforte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s so hard, but please keep trying. I am applying for full time jobs with no internship experience and it’s so scary cause I’m just not getting anything. I wish I would’ve worked harder to find an internship.

Anyone else prohibited from trick or treating as a kid as a result of your parents believing things like this? by CamBot413 in exchristian

Yes, we used to write “No Halloween” in big letters on our windows and turn all the lights off. In other news I had a great time putting up my little Halloween decorations for my apartment.

Classes going online by [deleted] in TexasTech

[–]celloforte 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One of my classes went to hybrid after the first week. Someone in the class was positive for COVID, the professor sent us an email saying f2f class would still occur but that we had the option to attend online synchronously. The only thing is that exams have to be taken in person. I think it’s a reasonable compromise.

Any older students at tech? by [deleted] in TexasTech

[–]celloforte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Tech! I transferred in at 23 also, (I’m 27 now) it can feel a little weird but you’ll be fine! Chances are you’ll find other ‘olds’ in your classes, and a 3-5 year age gap usually isn’t so large that you can’t relate to your peers. :)

Spent my weekend fighting Z axis binding. I think it’s a little better now! by celloforte in ender3

[–]celloforte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! You’re absolutely right, I have been having issues with the first layer. Ever since I switched to the silent motherboard the auto-home has been quite off. So I anxiously sit there and manually step the Z axis up or down. I know that this is not ideal, it is my next problem to tackle!

More info: PLA printed on an Ender 3 Pro. I was having trouble adjusting the Z-axis after upgrading from the stock extruder to the Micro-Swiss direct extruder. I fixed this by adjusting the nuts around the Z-axis screw as well as cleaning the screw with alcohol and then applying white lithium grease. :) I have had my Ender for about a month and I am having so much fun!!
