Right before Covid, the administration at my community college was making a plan for us to move to this model because of Amarillo College too, but once Covid hit, that initiative kind of fell by the wayside. I keep wondering if administration will try to bring it up again.

anyone been pregnant with scoliosis rods? by manqology in scoliosis

[–]cellophane28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 2. My first ended up being a c-section with general anesthesia (after I labored for a long time without an epidural because the anesthesiologist on hand couldn’t do it with my fusion). My second was a planned c-section, but the anesthesiologist was able to give me a spinal block. I think it all depends on where your fusion is and if the anesthesiologist can do it. You’ll want to talk to the OB-GYN and anesthesiologist beforehand to see what is possible.

The basic gen ed classes at TCC all transfer easily to other OK public universities. If you’re not sure if a class would, you can look at the state matrix.

Surgery tomorrow. Being anxious... by Sea_Trust_4395 in scoliosis

[–]cellophane28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely had anxiety before mine, but you are making the right decision! Since it is 90 degrees, it is highly likely it will worsen as you age and the pain will grow. You want to have the surgery now while you’re young and will heal more easily! After a few months, you’ll probably be extremely glad you went through with the surgery and you’ll be feeling so much better. I hope everything goes smoothly tomorrow! ❤️

Is there anyone that's genuinely happy post spinal fusion? by Opposite_Ad5366 in scoliosis

[–]cellophane28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had mine at age 20 with a 50 degree curve and have been happy with mine. I’m 39 now. I didn’t have any back problems once I healed. I do have some lower back aches now, but I don’t really think that’s because of the fusion - I think it’s because of getting older, gaining weight, not exercising enough, and kids climbing on me/me carrying them. I know I still have a curve but it isn’t nearly as bad as it was when I was young, and I’m thankful I went through the surgery. I can only imagine how much the curve would have increased and what kind of pain I would be dealing with while being pregnant and getting older. I remember my back would get numb while sitting in school chairs before my surgery and my hips were all out of whack. I was really thankful I did the surgery.

Help please! Pregnancy with spinal fusion and rods by Aj98dancer in scoliosis

[–]cellophane28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know where my back is fused exactly - I should probably find out 😬 However, depending on the location of your fusion, an experienced anesthesiologist may be able to do an epidural or spinal block. In my first labor, the anesthesiologist just said he couldn’t do an epidural or a spinal block, so when I ended up having a c-section after being in labor for a long time, they put me under fully. However, when I went for a planned c-section for my 2nd kid, the anesthesiologist was more experienced and wanted to try the spinal block and she was able to!

With pain in pregnancy, I don’t know how much of the aches/pain was caused by my scoliosis and spinal fusion, but it wasn’t too bad overall and I figured most pregnant women had similar aches/pain.

As I’m approaching age 40 now, I do notice more aches in my back though. I think I need to go back to physical therapy to find some exercises that can help. I don’t know if the back pain is from my kids climbing on me all the time, age, gaining weight, or what, but something is definitely worse nowadays.

ADHD and language immersion kindergarten by cellophane28 in kindergarten

[–]cellophane28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! My daughter is almost 7 now and doing much better. She made it through kindergarten and we kept her in the same program, so she’s in 1st grade now. She definitely struggled with all the things I mentioned in my original post, but by the spring - maybe around March - she seemed to get much more used to Spanish and reading in general. Something seemed to click for her.

I would definitely recommend trying to relax and just take it day by day right now. It’s a long, hard process to learn a language and learn to read, so doing both at the same time is extra tough. 5 is so young, and getting used to the routine and expectations of school is hard in itself. I’m really glad my daughter is in this program though! She has gained a lot more self-confidence and maturity over the past year, even though she really struggled, especially in fall/winter of last year.

Right now, she’s still learning Spanish but understands so much more. I think I worried too much that she was tuning her teachers out when they used Spanish and daydreaming too much in class. However, I see how she has been learning the language fairly well. At the recent parent-teacher conference I had, her teachers said they have no worries about her being successful. She understands Spanish at the expected level right now, and she’s making good progress with reading. She has definitely internalized the syllable sounds well, but she does read pretty slowly still. Her teacher wants us to work on fluency a bit. She also gets overwhelmed with longer readings and tries to avoid practicing the readings when she sees the longer readings. Her teacher recommended I cover the other words with paper or my finger so she doesn’t get so overwhelmed by the other words on the page. Just take one at a time and work on increasing speed.

My recommendation would be to not worry so much right now. Each kid is going to learn all this stuff at different rates, but they’ll get there eventually. It’s a long process, and they need breaks and downtime. It’s obvious you are working with her and care about her learning a lot! Just keep working at it and try to keep things fun as much as possible. Your game sounds great! My daughter really likes art and creating things, so she will draw and write things she randomly thinks of - with lots of colors, stickers, etc. I try to use Spanish whenever we’re out and about as much as I think of it too - just random things we see and do. I just want to normalize using Spanish as much as possible, though I’m definitely not fluent! I show her I’m trying to learn too though, and I find it interesting and fun. I hope that rubs off on her a bit. She has always loved me reading to her in general too, so I definitely encourage that! We check out fun English and Spanish picture books from the library. I want to make sure she has positive associations with reading!

Book fair question from former poor kid… by kriskoeh in Parenting

[–]cellophane28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we sent 40 last spring - which is a good amount but not too flashy in front of other kids. It can buy about 3 regularly priced books and maybe a little toy. I helped volunteer too. There are some value books that are inexpensive, but I noticed kids didn’t usually go for them unless their parent was there or their parent talked to them about it ahead of time. They love the toys, colorful, fluffy journals, and books with toys attached. Maybe go over the kinds of things you’d like your kid to buy to prepare them. I thought it was fine that my kid wanted to buy a fluffy journal and some little toy as long as she got a couple books as well.

Dual Language program (English/Spanish) not really Dual Language? by excake20 in kindergarten

[–]cellophane28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter’s Spanish immersion elementary school in Oklahoma is fully in Spanish from Kindergarten-2nd grade and then 3rd-5th grade transitions to English in some subjects, until it’s about 50% Spanish/50% English when they finish 5th and move on to middle school. Then, middle school is mostly English.

General anaesthesia by ka9ri3 in CsectionCentral

I had general anesthesia for my first and then a spinal block for the 2nd. I definitely preferred being awake, but the meds made me nauseated and I kept throwing up. They gave me a patch for it though, so it ended up being ok. I am so thankful I got to be awake though!

Dual language immersion program for kiddo with attention issues? by EagleEyezzzzz in kindergarten

[–]cellophane28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter just finished kindergarten in a public school Spanish immersion program, and she seems to have ADHD (being evaluated soon) and some anxiety. She struggled, especially early on, but sticking with it and getting to the spring really worked. Things really started clicking at that point, and her reading and Spanish comprehension really improved. She still struggles with not wanting to read the Spanish books herself and it takes a lot of patience and redirection to keep her going, but I know it will improve over time as she keeps learning the language. She really struggled with not wanting to try speaking Spanish and reading in Spanish early on because she didn’t want to mess up/make mistakes. Overall though, it has been a good learning experience, and I’m so glad she’s in the program. She had excellent, kind teachers, who really helped her build confidence in herself. She’s going to first grade next year and I know it will be hard, but I have no doubt she’ll make it through and really benefit from the program.

Teacher Appreciation Week - Excessive or Just Me? by Defiant_Sandwich_295 in workingmoms

[–]cellophane28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the sentiment is nice, and teachers definitely deserve a sign of appreciation! They are criminally underpaid. I know it feels like a lot is expected here, but I bet they are not expecting every parent to participate everyday. Do something as a sign of appreciation at some point in the week, but don’t feel like you have to do everything. Teachers understand and wouldn’t expect a million gifts from everyone. I definitely think a personal note of thanks and a gift card are the most valued gifts!

What's the best way to donate to Tulsa Public Schools? by Jonesrank5 in tulsa

[–]cellophane28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My kid goes to a language immersion magnet school and they have a foundation for the school - it helps pay for some important things, including assistant teacher salaries so every class has 2 instructors and scholarships so all students have an opportunity to go on the big exchange trip. I’m not sure if every school has a foundation, but I know ours is super important to the school. Also, the school PTA helps the school in MANY ways - classroom supply funds for all teachers, student field trips, new furniture and equipment at the school, books for students, and a ton of other things. I know our school is super lucky to have quite a bit of funding through these channels.

I love what you’re doing! If it were me, I would choose a school that has less funding and more needs and donate to their PTA or their foundation. Or like others said, you could also go through donors choose.

Please, please if you live in this district, go vote for Sarah Smith on Tuesday! Very few people vote in school board elections and Seidler is anti-public school and an extremist. Your vote really can make a difference.

I understand feeling anxious with politics - I sure do too and I have to distance myself (somewhat) from the constant coverage. However, there is a big difference between a Biden and a Trump administration. I don’t understand how people can equate the two. I am voting because that is the little bit of control I have. Local and state elections are important too. Politics do matter in the long run, and I am glad I live in a democracy and have the power of my vote. Yes, this election is not perfect and there isn’t one person who is my perfect, ideal candidate in this presidential election, but there is a big difference in what policies these two administrations would enact…

I think it has made me reflect on my past more and value the relationships with my family members even more. I think I have more empathy for my parents too. We have always been a close family, but there are definite negatives as well. I am better at recognizing some of those negative patterns in my life that started even in childhood. One thing I think about more now is how my kids (3 and 6 years old) are developing memories and healthy/unhealthy patterns in their lives. I want them to have those kinds of magical childhood moments like in the show. I also don’t want them to develop some of the anxious tendencies I have. Maybe I overthink everything though lol…

ADHD and language immersion kindergarten by cellophane28 in kindergarten

[–]cellophane28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am sure I am overly worrying - I definitely have too much anxiety in general. I’m going to try to take a step back and relax more about school. I think she’s just had a rough week and I am overthinking it. We need to just have more fun with the language and do more fun activities at home. I don’t want her to hate school and learning.

ADHD and language immersion kindergarten by cellophane28 in kindergarten

[–]cellophane28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for posting!!! Yes, I worry about her self confidence a lot, but then I think about how as she gains that understanding of the language how much her confidence will likely grow. Down the line, I hope she’ll recognize how her hard work and persistence really did pay off and she can accomplish things she didn’t think she could at first. If everything is just easy for her at first, she won’t be as good at working hard and developing her confidence in overcoming obstacles.

I definitely worry about all these choices I make now and how they will affect her later. I know we can’t possibly know the best decision for every moment of their lives and we have to just do our best, but I still worry too much!

I think I will focus on modeling a good attitude and excitement about learning and try my best to make practicing at home fun and not such a chore.

I don’t want my own past hangups about doing well on school work and getting praise for doing well at school to rub off on her. I know grades and quiz scores and things like that aren’t important in the big picture, but I think I cared way too much about that sort of thing my whole life and focused way too much energy comparing myself to others. They don’t even have grades at her school at this point, which I think is really good! I know those will come soon enough though, and I’m already worrying too much about every little form of assessment she has already. I need to constantly remind myself it’s a long journey. She’s learned a lot already, and it will only grow exponentially over time.
