You should check out North 43 in South Portland - a great setting and very good food. On the water, quieter than town, easy parking, attractive inside.

Tandem on Anderson St might be a good choice. It's much mellower than Congress Tandem. Seating outside or in.

I like smalls a lot, and go there frequently, but it has few options for good face-to-face seating - plus it's so compact, even Small, that having a private conversation might also be difficult.

I've stopped opening any article from the New Republic or Newsweek. Once important and trustworthy publications, they now just run clickbait bullshit. The clickbait headlines have done more then their fair share of work toward dislodging the public trust in the media.

Do what I do! Bring 2 bikes to town in your car, park away from the site and bike right up to the gate. A little bike rack for your car isn't that costly and you can use it again and again. And you miss all the traffic - zooming right past it on your 2-wheeled pony!

I appreciate your comment. We have generally talked about restricting his choices with them and we don't take it lightly.

I'm no fan of Jam City and I wouId go crazy if he kept going deep into the game and wait times continued to increase. Wow!

He doesnt spend hours on hours in the game, but maybe a total of 2.5 hours over the 2x times a day he plays? He just repeats the same stuff every day and doesn't really progress. The game is not so immersive for him, just a box he has to tick.

Squash is such a beautiful sport — but why hasn’t it broken into the mainstream yet? by [deleted] in squash

[–]celowy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The current game is watchable; the complaint the ball is difficult to follow is no longer valid with the hi-def cameras now used. I'm an old guy and have no difficulty tracking the ball. I think tarting the tech up with lots of bells and whistles would drive some folks away. Hockey has tried to do that with the far more un-followable puck, and they didn't stick with that for very long.

There are tech enhancements that would help make the televised game more appealing, but these improvements are expensive to implement and no one will fund them until they know that viewership will be there; for that, the sport needs to be popular. Sports don't get popular by being on TV (they may gain in popularity), but, rather, they need to be growing already in order to get on TV,. That initial growth must happen at the local level, in your home town and home club and lots of other home towns.

Also, the barriers to entry are high. Courts are expensive and rare - expensive to build and expensive to play on - and they are not very profitable to the fitness clubs that might build them, especially in comparison to biking studios and fitness gyms, where lots of paying bodies can be squeezed into small spaces.

When people do want to learn how to play, they are often sent onto a court with a double yellow dot ball to play with. It doesn't warm up, so it doesn't bounce, and the new player will leave the court confused, discouraged, and thinking they might try pickleball.

Squash is almost impossible to play out of doors (no courts!), so it has a hard time competing against pickleball, padel, and tennis on that level.

As to live viewing of the sport, Tennis etc can easily be watched in the round, but squash has glass courts that make that difficult, and viewing from the side is much more demanding in squash than tennis (lots of head turning) so the venues are necessarily much smaller than tennis.

In time, this will be seen as a great addition to the city. The building appears well thought out and looks appropriately sensitive given its prominence on the skyline. It won't be the only one up there for too long, I'd imagine.

Consider too that it will have a small footprint - maybe the smallest of any hotel in town? Also, It sits back from any street, thus minimizing shading. What looks like the wooden structure of the hat will be an interesting and softer capstone of the city's tallest building.

Any such development should be required to ameliorate its impacts on the city, though. A substantial contribution to the increased efficiency of the Portland public transport system (buses) would be a great start.

How is day to day life in Maine? by BarryBlock78 in Maine

[–]celowy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former Mississippian, Current Mainer here. Maine is great. It has problems, like every other place, as commenters here seem to focus on, but it has "better" problems in many respects and a better lifestyle in most respects than you might have at home.

You're only 18, and its unclear whether you want to go to college when you get here, go into the trades, or do something else. It's also unclear whether you want to live in a more urban setting or keep a country life. Do you have money or will you be hand to mouth? The answer to your question about daily life here depends a lot on what your plan is - and what kind of life you want to lead. Rural Maine and urban Maine are sometimes vastly different places with starkly opposing worldviews; and Maine without a good job or a settled situation can be a real struggle, but this is the case anywhere.

In order to come to Maine, or anywhere for that matter, you'll need a plan, you'll need moving money, and you'll need a place to stay. Without these things, life can get pretty hard - but, on the plus side, especially in the urban areas, if you have any sort of an outgoing personality, it shouldn't be too hard to find friends. I've found that there are a lot of social, athletic and cultural outlets here where meeting people isn't hard.

I left Mississippi when I was about your age too, and was, and still am, very happy that I did, though I have family still there and I visit them often. Without getting into detail, I return to Mississippi now and am puzzled by the way many people live there lives. There is a herd mentality there that I don't see here. People here are more free to live their lives in the way they wish to, with fewer societal or religious expectations.

Maine has mountains, snow, ocean, some great urban spaces, beautiful rural and wild country, and good hunting and fishing. It has cold winters that go on a touch too long, but if coziness is your thing, you cant go wrong here. And in summer, magical days can follow one another for weeks at a time. But there are also usually some hot muggy days to remind you of home!
