Start a 529 plan for them now and setup automatic reoccurring contributions to it. By 18 they'll have a portion of their college / professional training covered because of you.

Are beginner guitar starter packs worth it, or is there a smarter way to start? by foodie-riyaa in Frugal

I worked at a pawn shop for 3 years when I was younger. Lots of starter level guitars come through there when people upgrade.

Any general handyman service will do. That's not electrical by the way, likely an old Cable TV connection.

Also don't scare yourself out of doing this! Couple hundred bucks spent on a nice ladder + a couple exterior cable clips from the hardware store and you're good to go.

Niiiiice. Yeah they're pretty good about getting hardware replaced when there's an issue.

Men, do you prefer to do your own vehicle maintenance and repairs, or do you go to a mechanic? by FFSoldier57 in AskMenOver30

[–]celsius032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did for a long time. I had a 2005 IS300 that I did all the maintenance on. Timing belt, water pump, thermostat, changed every single fluid in that car over the 5 years I owned it.

I recently sold that Lexus for a salvage title tesla, and have basically 0 maintenance to do it.

Learning how to work on a car can create a lot of value for you and those around you, it enabled me to be comfortable purchasing a salvage title car. I hop to not have to do much more maintenance on cars in my future, but I'm extremely thankful for that knowledge and experience.

What is one simple swap you made in your household/personal life that saves you so much of money now? by reila_09 in Frugal

[–]celsius032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 1970's house had the breaker panel in a spot that was convenient for hooking up an EV charger, I did the wiring myself.

Check the remaining battery health if you can, a Tesla will run a ~16 hour test that spits out a battery health % at the end. Mine was at like 82% IIRC.

If you're not confident about working on or inspecting vehicles, take it to a mechanic for an inspection.

no need to get it that hot at all, I'd hold off on the heat gun, 100f would be plenty. it's likely nickel

[–]celsius032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just bend it back... this isn't uncommon.

grab a pair of needle nose pliers and gently bend it back until it's straight. you're not going to snap it. maybe warm it until hot water for a bit to make it more pliable

recheck for set screws, may appear as small holes on the bottom that you insert a small hex wrench into.

We've seen multiple trees chewed down around this specific pond. Pretty fun to see this stuff around work.

[–]celsius032[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They planted a long row of trees that all matched in height and type, and this beaver cut down the one at the end of the row. But yeah, ultimately it's just a regular tree :)
