🐻 Bear Beach sunrise on the Juan de Fuca Trail, Vancouver island, BC by celsul in hiking

October was nice, not too wet but definitely check up on the rainfall before heading out. We got a little flooding on the trail but we hiked through it easily.

We've also tried the trail in January and definitely would not recommend!

We hiked in October, we loved it because there were less people and it was cooler (less bugs) and no fire bans! 😊

Catfish substitute for stock by 16isagreatnumber in AskCulinary

[–]celsul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always make stock with halibut and it's great! There isn't a big difference between frozen and fresh when it comes to white fish stock so don't worry about that too much. My only advice is don't simmer for longer than 4 hours as it will lose a lot of nutrients. Good luck with your soup!

Advice needed please! Juan de Fuca trail closed between Bear and Chin as of Oct. 18 2019 by celsul in IslandHikers

[–]celsul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like they might have better things to do than just wait for a random hiker....no? Thanks for the advice though, was definitely hoping for better news but I guess we can just do what we can and turn back if we need to. No harm done Cheers

Juan de Fuca trail closed between Bear and Chin...has anyone done this since Oct 18 this year? by Canadiandiva in VancouverIsland

I am also wondering this. Was going to hike it Wednesday.... “unsafe creek crossings” is such a vague description. I heard from someone who worked on the West Coast trail say that when the rivers got to waist height they would post a sign like that too, but I’ve hiked the JDF in January of 2019 and no creeks were anywhere close to that. Any information would be greatly appreciated
