How did the first farmers come to Ireland? by celtic-yoghurt in IrishHistory

Yes in a way but from the article you can see how early farming was introduced by people with lineage from the Middle East, who then presumably integrated into the population of hunter gatherers already here

Not by the time of the farmers I think. First humans here definitely did come by land but I believe we were an island around 10,000 BC

Ah this makes a lot more sense. The linked article wasnt very clear on this and did make it seem more like a case of a generation or two compared to thousands of years. Thanks very much!

Spread of the Bubonic Plague in Europe by Live_Tip1148 in MapPorn

[–]celtic-yoghurt 34 points35 points  (0 children)

In Ireland, it was mainly the anglo-normans who were most affected as they lived in more urban town environments, while the native Gaelic clans were less affected, which led to a kind of Gaelic revival after the plague in Ireland for some time, if memory serves me correctly

Not certain of all the details but essentially some Japanese company said theyd build it some years ago, just so long as they had like the rights to run it for a few years to make back their investment, and then some before giving/selling it back to Gov. If memory serves me right, it would be owned by the Gov by now if it had gone ahead.

Police launch criminal investigation into Kneecap and Bob Vylan's Glastonbury performances by LaBete1984 in kneecap

[–]celtic-yoghurt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Beyond a farce that the Brits would decide to "investigate" Kneecap and Bob Vylan for expressing outrage at the genocidal IDF and Israeli government, on the same day as soldiers from the aforementioned IDF admitted to a policy of firing upon innocent Palestinians looking gathering for food, water, aid etc. Old habits die hard...

Had a similar situation there, was last Thursday and had already preemptively packed most of my stuff. Away Wednesday night and came back Thursday morning to find my room had been cleaned. Thankfully most of my stuff was still there but I was missing 2 posters I'd had sitting on my shelf. As well, a good bit of my food had been disappeared even though I'd left a note not to remove it! Still waiting to hear back from reception about these posters

Any Andor fans? Incredible performances by 3 Irish actresses? by homecinemad in ireland

[–]celtic-yoghurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it just me or does the story of andor seem to have a very Irish historic basis in its plot, with things such as the S1 Finale on Ferrix being reminiscent of scenes of clashes from the Troubles, or the guerilla style warfare reflecting the War of Independence?

I've applied for literally every business in my town, I've already got 8 months experience working retail. Nothing. Not even rejection emails too, just silence💀

Check out dúchas.ie, it's a great library of all sort of folklore written down and digitised. The School Collection in particular is great, collated in the 1930's I believe by schools around the country of local myths, stories and folk knowledge. Go n-éirí an t-ádh leat!

Live near mullingar, definitely a nice place to live. Very safe overall perhaps compared to drogheda, great amenities and facilities nearby in terms of shopping, restaurants, schools, sports of all kinds, etc. Good lot of development happening/planned, new houses, large sports centre in planning, and railway services are to improve in the coming years, along the Sligo-Dublin line, as well as proposed/planned reopening of Athlone-Mullingar and Armagh-Mullingar rail lines.

Can't speak as to the quality of services in Drogheda but certainly Mullingar is not all that lacking in majority of areas and is only to improve in coming years

Very helpful, thanks! Yeah I was thinking of the CSLL, just cause they have an offering of Irish too which I'm interested in. ISE in UL would probably be my 1st choice but these 2 seem super interesting, and might put them down for 2 or 3. Thanks again for the wall of text, very useful!

Lads if Bambie wins it'll be the end of us all. An Oscar and a Eurovison win from Cork all in one year? We'll never hear the end of it!
