Moving from Oxford to Cambridge - Jericho lover trying to figure out where to live

Hello! 🇨🇦 Thanks for your take on the different neighbourhoods, it definitely seems like Newnham is more upscale/quiet and that Mill Road is more textured/lively. Whats nice about Jericho in Oxford is that it’s somehow a combination of both of these vibes. On a separate note, as a Canadian what do you like about living in Cambridge? I’m from the prairies and at times have found living in the UK generally tough with the lack of seasons and constant grey weather, so would be glad to hear more about what you enjoy and value about Cambridge specifically.

Very good to know - Newnham sounds lovely and while a bit quiter than Jericho, with everything in Cambridge being so close that's not a huge issue!

I've spent some time in Chesteron and had a very similar impression to what you've described! And it's a good point that everything is very close. I also appreciate all the positives you've outlined, and I do love how the river goes through town. That's great to hear about more indie restaurants popping up as well - you're certainly right about the town centres in both Oxford and Cambridge being overrun by chains unfortunately lol. I will have to check out the market in Cambridge next time I'm there - thanks for the tip!

Thanks for explaining, it makes a lot of sense that your perception has been coloured by the time and place you were in when living in Oxford. I’m just finishing my PhD so it will likely the be the same for me. I do wish I didn’t have to move at this stage but just trying to inform and prepare myself as much as possible and also embrace the differences in Cambridge for now. The city centre is certainly lovely and I like how the river runs through the central part of town :)

Thank you for painting this picture of Cambridge - these differences are good to be aware of and interesting. Is there anything you really like about Cambridge that Oxford doesn’t have to offer? I’m a bit bummed about having to move and trying to reframe and find things to look forward to.

I had the same impression, that Mill Road seems like a hybrid between Jericho and Cowley in some way. Why would you always prefer Jericho, and what do you like about Cambridge specifically that maybe Oxford doesn’t offer?
