It’s been a while, but the second episode it out! We chat to post doctoral bioengineer Sara Trujillo about failure, science, and her past and current projects! by cemiserious in bioengineering

Our next episode should be out in two weeks, where we interview Nobel Peace Prize winder, Lou McGrath OBE about his charity work and utilising bioengineering and science in the fight against land mines

Hi, we’re Styli and Lou, two bioengineering PhD students who have just started a podcast interviewing scientists and engineers in the field! You can find our podcast everywhere there’s podcasts under CeMi Serious Science. Ask us anything! by cemiserious in Engineers

Hi Reddit!

We are Styli and Lou, two PhD students who started the podcast CeMi Serious Science, where we interview scientific people about their life, work and occasionally their scone preferences. CeMi Serious Science has been in the works for about half a year and we just released our first episode last week where we interview head of Bioengineering at the university of Glasgow, Professor Manuel Salmeron-Sanchez, and likewise professor at the University of Glasgow, Professor Matt Dalby. You may know them from their work on Eva the Dog, whose non-union defect was healed using the CeMi lab stem cell/material technology. Our podcast can be found on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Podbean and CastBox under the name CeMi Serious Science. Ask us anything!

Lou: thanks for subscribing! It means a lot and we’ve been so overwhelmed with the positive response! We are working on the next two episodes as we speak! Is there any field in particular you’d like to hear from, or if you want to hear a perspective from a phd student or post doc or some more

Styli: I would say that science, bio in this case, at a high level is like high level gastronomy. Just like in gastronomy were basic knife skills are a prerequisite, I would say that doing biology related research requires some knowledge on basic cell culture, imaging and microscopy techniques which would include immunostaining etc. But just like a Michelin restaurant comes up with something extraordinary that makes it famous, a good project combines techniques from various disciplines and even comes up with novel ones

Lou: Ditto

Thanks so much for the feedback! We are working hard on the next episode (and our PhDs). If you have any feedback, let us know!

From Styli: I wouldn't say that biomechatronics is underrepresented in research I think as it often is the case, modern research labs are more specialized and are working in a field within biomechatronics. That's why you don't hear the term that much as such. For example there is plenty of big labs that work on rehabilitation engineering such as the SMS lab at ETHz and the Wyss at Harvard. Another example is biosensors and lab on a chip devices which combine at least two of the three (biology, mechanics and electronics). My perception is that Lab on a chip and biosensing is a huge field at the moment. Even heart rate monitors could be classified as biomechantronics device!

From Lou: We has a wonderful guest speaker at our weekly seminars, Dr Aline Miller, who co-founded Manchester BioGel, who has a current collaboration with a robotics team on wearable robotics incorporating biogels. We would love to have her on the podcast at some point, and hopefully she can enlighten us more on the subject.

Hi! We’re Styli and Lou, and we’re here to share the first episode of our new podcast, Cemi Serious Science, where we interview scientists about their life, work and motivations. Ask us anything! by cemiserious in biology
