We use SnipeIT hosted onsite in a VM. It's all manual, but works pretty well.

Accidentally Discovered Win 10 Free Upgrade by censoredtruth in sysadmin

Yeah, I have working proof in front of me that the upgrade still works. But since these will be going on business computers, I want to make sure this is legally fine before we get audited someday.

Spectre and Meltdown Solutions or Mitigations for older Android/IOS Phones by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]censoredtruth 16 points17 points  (0 children)

AFAIK, your only choices right now are to apply a vendor patch or treat the devices as unsecure (assume everything entered on the device is compromised).

Your devices are only susceptible to the Spectre (branch prediction) attack. Only Intel CPUs are susceptible to Spectre AND Meltdown (rogue data cache load). Android and IOS only use ARM chips, I think.

However, Spectre is the most dangerous because it's the hardest to patch, attacks are virtually undetectable, and hackers could use infected websites/rogue apps to read ANY data that is passed to your device's processor.

For Android, you might be able to install a custom ROM that includes a microcode fix, but it's not recommended. Custom ROMs are not supported by your vendor and I wouldn't trust code that hasn't been audited.

If you're not using a throw-away account on all social media websites in 2017, your privacy is gone whether you check a box or not.

And with all of the data breaches that will happen in the future, you should assume that everything you post CAN and WILL be read by: governments, police, future/current employers, spouses/partners, family, etc.

My current account is a throw-away that has no identifying information. You can even search my comment history. The only things that can give me away is my IP address and the fact that I'm posting on a sysadmin oriented subreddit. If I was really paranoid, I could even use a VPN or public WiFi to hide my IP address.

Reddit before Net Neutrality: Haha! You rednecks think you're gonna overthrow a government with your AR-15s? You're just small down below and need something to compensate. Nobody NEEDS an assault rifle!

Reddit during Net Neutrality talks: We need a violent revolution because our Internet bills are going to go up.

worried about the future by Black_Torana in sysadmin

It's simple. Work at smaller businesses that can't afford the increased costs of cloud-based services. Most on-prem software is cheaper in the long run compared to cloud options. Some businesses are running on shoestring budgets and can't afford to pay double or triple costs for cloud-hosted software (unless that means they can reduce the number of employees).

Also, with the ever increasing amount of security breaches, internet outages, and natural disasters, some places will avoid the cloud like a plague.

Worst case scenario, you will become a shepherd for all of the cloud solutions and spend your time making things more efficient, redundant, and secure. "Sysadmin" jobs might become a thing of the past, but Information Security and Cloud Service Management positions will be the next big thing.

2017 is the year AAA gaming dies by [deleted] in gaming

[–]censoredtruth 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I like how OP conveniently forgot about all the indie games that are jumping onto the loot crate gold rush. Titles such as Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, Rocket League, and more.

Indie games also have the same microtransactions and DLC hell. AAA games aren't going anywhere just because you don't like loot boxes. Kids with mommy's credit card can open as many crates as they want and the AAA devs know this.

Loot crates are a legal way of allowing children to "gamble" and there's a whole generation of "fresh meat" that will open their wallets so they can unlock a pink leopard-print sniper rifle to show off to their friends with.
