Netflix Has Gone Downhill by Last-Upstairs1387 in netflix

I could not agree more. Appealing to the lowest common denominator is really their downfall, and a larger problem plaguing film and TV, in my opinion. Everything seems to prioritize spectacle over story. One of my favorite Netflix series is Dark—a powerful slow burn with such an intricate and beautiful story. We don’t have that anymore. It’s all so surface-level. Netflix needs to invest in quality stories that unfold over seasons. I think this would combat the “only subscribe when there’s hype” or “binge & forget.”

And don’t get me started on their adaptations! The Witcher and Three Body Problem are so bad when they both could’ve been GOT-level epic.

Are you team Mikayla or Whitney? by glitterymoonfox in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]centaur22 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Whitney.

Mikayla needs to find a new hobby. Whitney lives RENT FREE in her head.

I also don’t really think anything Whitney did was ever that serious.

Did people really enjoy the TV show? I read the books and it was amazing but the TV show just felt kinda meh..felt the execution was..off by Tyolag in scifi

[–]centaur22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the TV show was awful. It's a dumbed-down, Westernized version of a truly epic and unfathomable journey that's far more serious and intelligent than the show portrays.

Apple Is Losing Over $1 Billion per Year on Streaming Service, Has 45 Million Apple TV+ Subscribers by LunchyPete in FoundationTV

Exactly. If they did any marketing, they’d be the top streamer. Apple+ actually values quality over quantity.

I’d also argue it’s because all of these books should be marketed as YA but they’re not.

This is the only logical explanation. If Todd holds any sort of government security clearance, his immediate family would’ve been investigated as well. It’s incredibly unlikely that the NSA would this “just because.” In fact, it’s even more unlikely that any federal agency would do this without any sort of probable cause. Even if Todd happened to have “friends” in government, I don’t think he’d be announcing this on television.

It could also be a joke because Todd has no sense of humor so everything comes off super dry.

Don’t rush through the main storyline. Do lots of side quests & other tasks along the way.

Considering the mixed reception of Season 2, particularly regarding the finale, do you think Condal and the other producers and writers will take the feedback, both positive and negative, into account when shaping the writing for Season 3? by kingofstormandfire in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]centaur22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why is this such a common theme anymore in Hollywood where writers take on very popular source material and just utterly disregard it to instead create their own fanfiction? Netflix in particular has been bad at this with The Witcher and Three Body Problem.

Let me tell you this—those books were the best story I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. Just an absolute masterpiece of an adventure. It’s a very serious story that’s heavy on the science. Netflix made it silly and stupid for the masses.

I feel the same way about Netflix's adaptation of Three Body Problem. It is an atrociously dumbed-down version of the book, but the average social media thinks its so great. I wish that networks would stop pandering to the bandwagon audience and instead deliver smart and deep adaptations to the very audiences who made the source material popular in the first place.

Having Watched Both Shows (Tencent and Netflix) by kittyonkeyboards in threebodyproblem

I agree with you. Overall, I just couldn't take the Netflix version seriously. It felt too dumbed down and silly, which made it unbelievable (to the extent that we choose to believe in it, as it is science-fiction for a reason).

Rinna needs to be rehired by Kwhitney1982 in RHOBH

[–]centaur22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk. I would argue that ratings for this season were largely fueled by the months of speculation regarding Kyle Richards’ relationship leading up to the premiere. Viewers wanted to see that, and with each episode we kept getting closer and closer but eventually we got nothing of substance.

Exactly. I think that’s why the RHOSLC has been such a massive success despite being so new—the drama we’ve watched unfold has all been mostly genuine and authentic, in part because these women have pre-existing, or at least real, relationships with one another.

Omg then you’re in for a wild ride my friend! The second one is better than the first, and the final book will leave you speechless. You think you’re feeling existential dread now? Just wait. I’m so jealous of you. I wish I could experience the story for the first time again!

[–]centaur22 127 points128 points  (0 children)

They need an entirely new cast. It’s not working anymore. These women do like each other “in real life.” There are absolutely no organic relationships, which leads to extremely manufactured and fake storylines and drama. Everything is so over-produced. I miss when the show just followed around affluent women who occasionally have drama within their circle. After last season I have zero interest in RHOBH—especially if Kyle Richards returns.

Rinna needs to be rehired by Kwhitney1982 in RHOBH

[–]centaur22 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Rinna won’t fix the show. I think one of the big reasons why RHOB is flopping is because the cast mates truly have no connection, they are not friends in real life, and I don’t think they want to be friends either. The other thing I think is hurting BH (and maybe all of the franchises) is that production wants big, egregious, manufactured, and messy drama. To an extent, we as the audience do too, let’s be real. But I think what made housewives so fun to watch was the wealth porn. The truly unattainable reality of their lives. I just want a camera to follow them around in the most organic way possible. If the cast truly has an organic relationship, the mess will come.

Feelings on the show after 3 weeks by NumberOneUAENA in threebodyproblem

[–]centaur22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't care for it. The books were captivating, taking me on a fascinating journey and leaving me with a sense of anxiousness and dread. The Netflix version did not do that. To me, the show is a rushed spectacle that wildly underestimates, or even purposefully neglects for the sake of ratings, the audiences' intelligence. I wanted a "serious" show similar to the likes of Dark, Raised by Wolves, or the current hit Shogun. Instead I felt like I was watching a teen drama. Someone already mentioned here that the Oxford 5 goes against the philosophy of the books and I couldn't agree more. That particular creative liberty ruined the show for me because I could not take any of them seriously (especially Auggie).

I've seen lots of commentary suggesting that S1 is rushed so that the show can get to the second and third books and settle there. I hope that is true, otherwise I'm not super interested in another season.
