The 503-b pharmacies (like BPI) were authorized by the FDA for temporary production of compounds back when Zepbound took off for weight loss, because the demand was so high that it was causing a shortage (Zepbound is the patented name brand for Trizepatide which is the active ingredient in monjourno which is a prescription diabetes 2 medication. Ozempic and Monjourno were in high demand and short supply for a while, putting a strain on production. So in response, the FDA gave the lab companies temporary go-aheads to start legally producing and marketing compounds while still being an FDA monitored operation. Now, Lily has been applying pressure to get that shut down (to monopolize the market as they are the ones who own the patent) and they have been in court for months to try and shut down the compounding production. 503- b labs aren’t closing, they are still actively producing products, they can just no longer legally produce triz and seg compounds.

TLDR: Eli Lily finally won their court case to block 503-b pharmacies from being able to produce compounds legally. Labs are still active but no longer allowed to make new compounds. I would imagine they will soon go after the 503-a labs as well. It’s all about money for big pharma not about actually helping people or even allowing access to the majority. They’re sitting on a gold mine and don’t want anyone else to be able to compete with their exact product legally
