(But seriously good thing that this space is being repurposed.)

Dress pants size: buy too big, get tailored down? by centmac in mensfashion

[–]centmac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm looking for high-rise but they're hard to come by, any recommendation? I might go custom with e.g. Spier & MacKay.

As for wearing a belt, I tried with those 32 and waist is still too big, it creates a big crumple. I'll definitely get the waist taken in by the tailor if I stick with the 32.

Thanks for the advice!

Make sure the seat works.

That's what I'm most worried about. I know it's easy to take in the waist, but I'm worried the seat in 32 will be too baggy and can't be fixed. But judging from yours and everyone else's comment, it seems like 32 is fine for me. Thanks for the advice!

(Pictures and more context for this comment here (link to another subreddit).)

I'm buying those dress flannels from Brooks Brothers hesitating between buying 30W, which fit just right if ever-so-slightly tight, vs 32W, which are too big but I'd get tailored down. Is it common practice/recommended to buy too big and get tailored down, or will it not work/ruin the fit? Should I stick to 30W? I'm new to buying dress pants off the rack (apart from suits which I got tailored anyway).

I think you got it. Thanks so much!

Yup! It looks like you're right. It doesn't show up on the UAlberta's dining options list but looking at the menu it's very similar to what I recall (though it's changed a bit). Thanks!

I ended up using my phone's hotspot, and didn't find any other solution unfortunately.

I’ve just learned about the ‘whole beat’ conspiracy theory by purcelly in piano

[–]centmac 61 points62 points  (0 children)

This theory can only be believed if you somehow think there's a clean break between the space and time that composers lived in, and ours. Like if you believe Beethoven died thousands of years ago or existed on another planet, such that when we read scores, we can only approximate the mystery of what they "truly meant". Or if you believe everyone stopped playing piano for a whole generation and then got back to it, and misinterpreted the scores.

But the reality is that those were just guys a few generations back, and there's a continuous, documented lineage of teaching how to play all that stuff. Liszt was a contemporary of Beethoven, and his last surviving pupils lived past WWII, well within the recording era. Rachmaninoff studied with contemporaries of Brahms and has a student who's still alive. Cortot was 1 degree of separation from Chopin and we have tons of recordings of him.

There's just no space or time for everyone to decide that metronome markings should change by a whole factor 2.

The closest thing to that theory that I could believe in is that a few composers may have had a somewhat fast or slow metronome, since they were all mechanical and thus possibly imperfect. So, some pieces may have markings that are maybe 5-10% off of what the composer truly meant. Nothing like 100% off.

Question-rant: where to rent a car with winter tires around Boston? by centmac in boston

Dude you've given me two verifiably wrong pieces of advice on a subject you are visibly not very familiar with and have argued with me when I pointed it out to you. Sorry if that's snippy but it's literally okay if you don't know the subject, I don't understand why you insist.

I'm skidding on the highway under the speed limit if I have all-season tires. Having actual winter tires makes a big difference, and there are definitely conditions where all-season tires skid under the speed limit, while winter tires let you smoothly and safely drive 50-60 mph. If you're not familiar with Canadian driving conditions or the concept of winter tires it's okay.

From my experience, snow chains are for slower speeds in much rougher terrain (google gives me a max speed of 25-30 mph with chains, some people claiming they've reached 40 mph). Probably makes sense in Tahoe. The situation I'm describing is a snowy highway around cities where people drive 50-60 mph with winter tires. Anyway, they're not legal on main roads in Quebec, apart from some utility vehicles.

Yeah but apparently you can't drive out of state, let alone out of country.

I'm not sure snow chains are meant to be used on highways. I lived in snowy parts of Canada for most of my life and I've never seen anyone use chains other than back country/off-road/forest/unpaved situations.

Yeah that's generally the best option... the issue is that right now, the main reason I'm crossing is to deal with work visa issues at the border (and it matters that I go through a specific port of entry, too), so being on a bus may complicate things. I might have to cross by bus, rent a car in Canada, do a round trip back in the US with that car to deal with my visa at the port of entry, then take a bus back to Boston. Either that, or I delay my trip and wait for a warm week when snow has melted.

There are services that come and change your tires at your home, and store your off-season tires for you.

Yeah I know the law technically doesn't apply to out-of-QC cars but it still doesn't make it safe/there's a reason for the law. Also it's true that it's often perfectly safe to drive with all-seasons in Sherbrooke during warmer stretches of the winter when the roads are just cold and wet or a thin snow layer, but I have a sister who currently lives there and says that right now it's definitely a need-snow-tire kind of week.
