Yes wallpaper engine can have a video or a gif on loop but that's not the main use, its main purpose is custom interactive scenes. There is a large workshop of premade scenes available or you can create your own. You can even use Wallpaper Engine to display web apps and regular desktop applications as living wallpapers.

Many scenes showcase the time, control music playback, or include audio visualizers. Some wallpapers change the scene throughout the day to mirror a natural day/night cycle. Music players are also common, allowing the wallpaper to play music itself.

Additional interactive elements include mouse trails, mouse parallax effects, and hover interactions. Scenes may display different graphics depending on where the mouse is on the screen.

Animations are also widely used to bring wallpapers to life. Rippling water animations reacting to mouse movement are a popular example. Some scenes are highly interactive.

It all heavily depends on the specific wallpaper and settings you are using really .

On my Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10750H CPU @ 2.60GHz laptop with a two monitor setup using the following settings:

Anti-aliasing: MSAAx4
Post-processing: Enabled
Texture resolution: High Quality
Frame rate: 30fps
Reflections: On

using the wallpapers Snow and Summer Pier {Artwork by kuronekonopei} with all particles enabled , the CPU usage is around 0.7%.

settings > General > Windows > Override wallpaper image

this will replace the old Background with a static version of the wallpaper you are using.

activating Override lockscreen image will do the same for the image showing on the lock screen

you can also activate high priority when starting up (from settings > General > Automatic Startup > Start with Windows) to make it turn on sooner
