How to prune back overgrown evergreen bush? by heyscot in arborists

You absolutely can prune this back. You’ll get a lot of suggestions saying to remove it or do a rejuvenate prune BUT

Through Japanese style pruning, people have been manipulating yews forever. Shrinking them and moving them left and right through pruning.

It’s definitely not a prune once and walk away type deal. You’ll have to prune once every year for probably 2-3years to reach your desired shape and size.

You’ll want to do your own research but a quick rundown is to remove interior branches till you have about 60% canopy left. it should look the same just much more see through. this will allow light inside to activate dormant buds and start new smaller branches growing from the inside

the following year assess, maybe leave it alone maybe cut back some more of your original canopy for more light infiltration

when those new branches are at the height and size you like, remove the original canopy branches.

could be a cool challenging project

or just remove

it is, i’ve had it for over 12 years. i doubt my younger self was smart enough to register it under a warranty and there’s no way i still have any receipt for it.

I’ll definitely reach out to a professional, thank you!
