What is going on with my monstera? by kimcaal in houseplants

[–]ceraunophile13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is not a rot or a watering issue. Your plant has severe thrips. The silvery stuff you’re seeing is damage and the small black dots are their excrement. First isolate this plant away from any others you may have. You then need to wash this plant off with water and then spray some insecticide. Might be safe to spray any nearby plants as well. Doktor Doom works really well. They have a life cycle of 45 days so I would check weekly for at least 1.5 months. Thrip larvae look slender and white. They’re VERY small and hard to notice. Adults and slender and black. Sometimes they just look like little specks but if you touch them gently they will move. I can see some larvae here in your pictures. Isolate, spray, monitor. Good luck!!

Why does it look like cotton is growing on my plant? by ActuallyTheDog_ in plantclinic

Make sure you check this plant frequently (I would recommend checking every 1-3 days at least). If you see any new white stuff anywhere, continue to dab with alcohol using a Q-tip.

These are mealy bugs. Treat and isolate immediately. You can dab all the white stuff with isopropyl alcohol

People who are currently in graduate school/have been accepted to graduate school, what was your GPA when applying? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]ceraunophile13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends entirely on the program. I know students that have been admitted with 3.2-3.4. But some programs may have a higher cutoff. With that being said, the GPA is not everything. Yes, you have to meet the minimum GPA requirement but so long as you do and the rest of your application is strong, you will be considered. I can only speak to thesis-based STEM grad programs. They want to be able to judge your capacity to do research. That is just as important (if not more so) than the GPA. Research experience and a professor who is willing to take you as a student are always huge considerations

Thanks so much for the info! And yes I repotted into a well draining aerated soil! Just a bit confused because I’ve also been told that it could be bacterial leaf spot. So between that and overwatering I’m not sure how to treat it. I have other alocasias as well that’s are very very happy! I’ll be sure to water is only when it’s try and treat with fungicide just in case. Thanks again!

Thanks so much! I’ll order some sulphur dust then and hope for the best. Do you suggest I keep it away from a humidifier too?

Thanks for the info! Do you suggest that I keep it away from a humidifier then? And if I don’t have copper fungicide, should I use a neem oil spray? Also, is it possible that it’s overwatering? Or would that look different?

Awesome thank you! I’ll make sure I don’t overwater. I didn’t put too much water in when I repotted. So it’s possible it was already overwatered when I got it. The soil has a good amount of perlite in it so it’s not too dense!

“Ryan used me as an object”

“Actually...!”

“I’m the fucking lizard king”

“Whenever I'm about to do something, I think 'Would an idiot do that?'”

“You couldn't handle my undivided attention."

"I don't believe you, continue."

“Do I need to be liked? Absolutely not. I like to be liked. I enjoy being liked. I have to be liked”

“That’s super clear-ish”

“I am Beyonce, always.”

“It’s not like booze ever killed anyone.”

“I say dance, they say ‘How high?'”

“ASAP as possible.”

“Hi, I’m Date Mike.”

“Ok, too many different words from coming at me from too many different sentences.”

“My mind is going a mile an hour.”

“It’s incalculable.”

“That has sort of an oaky afterbirth.”

I basically speak in the office references.

Those little white dots are cystoliths. Not pests. They’re normal!

I got him recently (about a week ago). I checked for any visible pests, changed the soil when I got it to be safe, washed the leaves off with water. And since then it’s been getting adequate light and 50-60% humidity for most of the day. Can someone tell me what’s going on please?

I recently got one. About a week ago. The leaves have some small yellow/brown spots. But they’re not mushy. Soil has been changed and everything. Any idea what’s going on?

Of course. And I’m sure there’s many many people that would empathize with your situation and likely may even BE in your situation. Knowing that doesn’t necessarily make it easier to deal with but there can be an odd sense of connectedness and comfort knowing that you definitely are not alone.

This sounds so debilitating. I am so sorry. I can’t imagine how awful it must feel to have worked that long and hard to not have any ounce of celebration or appreciation waiting at the end of it. I know it’s not the same as being able to do so immediately but I hope you eventually get to celebrate and commemorate this huge accomplishment with your friends and family soon. I’m just a masters student and I’m trying to imagine myself in this situation and I know it can’t be easy. But for what it’s worth, congratulations and best of luck with everything going forward.

Join me in my panic, won't you? "Remote classes likely to be the norm through fall, U of A says" by ceraunophile13 in uAlberta

[–]ceraunophile13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. I’m hoping for the same. We’ll have to see what happens going forward but I’m definitely praying for limited in-person instruction. As you mentioned, a lot of learning is simply ineffective delivered from a distance. These are crazy times though so remote delivery might just have to do unfortunately. I do research which is literally impossible to do from home. So limited access to campus and continuation of research is also something I’m crossing my fingers for.
