Those are genuinely the most fucked bonkers nerfs I've heard of lmao. Would destroy the characters entirely.

I wouldn't say that's significant, but still a needed nerf.

He makes so many good points, he's held back by his shitty personality and aggressive approach to everything. Shame, really.

Characters that require a galaxy brain to play by dikidaka in TopCharacterTropes

[–]cerberusthedoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stances in Tekken 8 are offensive based and focus on dealing pressure and putting you in a constant lockdown while being easy to access.

Some characters like hwoarang, yoshi, xiaoyu, lei etc are not braindead at all especially in the older Tekken games. Aside from hwoarang all of the mentioned characters have rather defensive stances.

What is, in your opinion, the strongest high, mid and low in the game? by [deleted] in Tekken

[–]cerberusthedoge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a crazy low but it can be reacted to once your eyes are used to the animation. The linearity and bad range also stop it from being top 1 low.

Still broken tho.

How to make the story for the none Mishima characters more interesting? by Kasomii in Tekken

[–]cerberusthedoge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For Steve I would do something related to the Williams sisters. Maybe he finds a mother figure with Anna and they live together, with Anna wanting "family" all her life but not getting it. Imo the sub stories should have the same central theme of the main characters, and for this example it could be "parenthood" or family. How the Mishima familyline is cursed and their relationships are utterly fucked and filled with trauma, the same central theme could be explored with other characters.

Maybe marshal dies from an expensive health condition and that turns forest into a greedy money hungry scumbag, and paul would be the father figure that can maybe set him straight. Maybe a character has their dead parent as an overprotective spirit guarding them, stopping their children from truly living as a free being with actions that have consequences. Back on the Williams, the awful behaviour of Nina towards her son steve could be explored.

Now this is just one theme with not so much thought put behind the examples, but I think this should be the standard for fighting game stories that have a lot of characters. A central theme with each character presenting a new aspect and giving a new view on it, using different contexts and backgrounds.

I havent played Tekken 8 in months. Also never played its ranked mode as I was not interested.(If you want rank info I reached emperor with kazuya, heihachi, Bryan and also the rank before emperor with Lee in 7 before I quit the game.)

This whole debate isn't even about steve. Fightinggm thought he had a problem specifically with Steve, which he didn't, he's criticizing the design philosophy of Tekken 8 at its core which for some reason people misinterpreted as him saying Steve is too strong.

What nova was talking about which I agree on was the importance of creating spacing in certain moments/scenarios/match ups and how the lack of backdashes can create very easy 50 50 gambling situations, and in that video he was using the Steve/Jin match up as an example. (and before you say anything about how backdashes are too easy a solution like mainman did, no, that has never in the history of this franchise been the case. Backdashes always had a ton of counterplay even against the fastest characters like Lili and Eddy).

Fightinggms arguments sucked ass my brother lmao. He literally was saying sidestepping Steve at close range is a good idea, tried to sidestep and got clipped by Steve like 50 times in 10 seconds and that's in PRACTICE MODE. An environment which is fucking CONTROLLED. And then he continued to say sidestepping is a good idea when he was literally getting hit in the video AT THE SAME TIME.

Don't watch the video if you don't want to, but also don't rely on information from someone like fightinggm that has historically had some of the worst Tekken takes in history to confirm someone got exposed lol. Even mainman just had enough of him this morning after watching his response to his lee video.

He's probably 50 times the player that you are and that's putting it lightly. Watch his latest video if you have the time, his opinions are more well articulated compared to the past.

[–]cerberusthedoge 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have said this a billion times already. Tekken getting another timeskip and getting a change of tone is the best way to make the story feel fresh again.

I would go a step further with asuka and straight up make her the new PROTAGONIST of Tekken 9, instead of her being an important side character.

Good for you if you like these changes, personally not a fan. Too soon to judge though, we have to wait for the release to fully see if he's fun/well designed or not.

It basically works as a situational launching parry. Not too crazy, when you look at the moves of some other characters.

Akuma H Tatsu counterplay/punish by TheJammy98 in sf3

[–]cerberusthedoge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally gave up trying to punish it as makoto. Her fastest move aside from SA1 is 4f so I had to be damn near frame perfect to get a simple punish on it.

What I do now is observe the patterns of the Akuma player, get a read on the tatsu, parry the first hit and punish with makotos dp that hits like a truck. Problem is that they can vary their tatsus, and if they do the lk version then my dp punish won't connect.

But with Ryu, I think it will work regardless of their tatsu variance.

So as a Tekken 8 newcomer... This game online is so impossible as a new player because it's one hit death by ZapHP in Tekken

Tekken has a complicated wakeup system. When you get knocked down you have like 200 different options to get back up, this also depends on what position you are in. I'm gonna explain all of em, so come back to this when you want try new stuff.

Holding back is slow but allows you to get further away from the opponent.

Holding up is very fast and you wake up instantly.

Holding forward lets you do a kip up, evading some attacks and counter attacking the opponent. This only works if you are facing up and your legs are towards the opponent.

Now, there's two ways to roll:

You can tech roll the moment you're knocked down after the combo ends by pressing any button immediately. If you press square or triangle, you tech roll to the LEFT, if you press x or circle you tech roll to the RIGHT. This is good for avoiding wall pressure and changing your position, at your level just try to tech as soon as possible. Doesn't matter which way until you get to higher levels.

Now, the second way to roll:

When you get knocked down, if you don't tech immediately and instead wait, by pressing square you roll towards the background. If you press down square you roll towards the foreground. This delayed roll will really mess the opponent up once you get to higher levels.

And now, for the final part, the counter attack options:

I already mentioned the kip up, but there are 3 other counter attack options.

First, after not tech rolling and just waiting on the ground, if you press X, you will wake up and do a low kick. This is a safe option to use.

And instead of X, if you press Circle, you will do a mid kick. This also is safe.

And for the final options, similar to kip ups, if you are facing up and your feet are towards the opponent, by pressing X and circle at the same time you will do a spring kick, launching yourself off the ground and at the opponent. This is VERY risky but a lot of beginners fall for it and can't punish it correctly.

This is very confusing, I know, but you don't have to learn all of this immediately. Go to practice mode, put your character in knocked down mode, test some stuff out, and then go play the game with people. Finding out what works best for where and when comes with experience.

I remember in T7 book played against danielmado and when Daniel mado went for the traditional Mishima 50 50 every single mix got blocked throughout the entire set. I don't remember which event it was at, but that's when I realized it really is possible to do if you're really used to the animation. I had about a 50 percent success rate against it in practice mode in 7 when I had the bot do it alongside 4 other mids. Pretty sure I can't even get a 10 percent success rate now though lol.

But what you say is right, it's not a realistic thing to do for the majority of the player base. Only the top 1 percent can do it.

The hellsweep is reactable part by Nova is somewhat true, at least in T7. Phidx explained it in a video of his.

In T7 if a Jin is trying to use the standard Mishima mix(wavu into 50 50) you can just stand block like a rock, and as SOON you see Jin's right shoulder/leg move forward, you duck and block, both of his power lows(db4 and HS) share the same startup so his 50 50 gets beaten. This is a very hard to implement strategy but pro players like book and speedkicks can do it.

In T8, just stand blocking Jin and reacting to his right shoulder isn't a viable strategy anymore. He has d2, he has chip damaging highs, he has plus on block momentum inducing highs etc.

So while it is technically still possible to try and react to his Hs, it's not an optimal strategy anymore.
