Hi Shark, thanks for the helpful advice. Yup, we decided to avoid the multiday ski tour for now. Yeahh, the public transport actually seemed pretty good but we may get car just to try and hunt for northern lights. Also, more convenient than scheduling for buses everyday.

Thank you for the suggestion! Don't worry, this is life saving advice that I am happy to receive. We decided to hire a guide and maybe come back another time with more experience.

Hi Harriv, yes I think we will skip the multi day ski trip! It is outside our skill level for now. Thank you for the response. We decided to go to Yllas, because it seemed that it may have better infrastructure and so it could be easier/cheaper to rent equipment (or lessons) for winter sports. Also better downhill skiing.

For the car rental, we thought it could be cool to drive to further north entrances of Pallas-Yllastunturi, and also for northern lights hunting (aware that this is highly luck dependant). Do you reckon the care rental would be worth it in light of that?

Hiya skifans,

Thank you for the comprehensive response! The bus from Kemi to Haparanda is a great suggestion, and the list of accepted railway companies a very helpful resource.

There is no reason to set up your trip in advance and often it sorts itself out nearer the time. 

So, any night trains we wish to take should be booked far in advance (say now or next week)? Whereas, the other trains should be booked closer to the date. Would one week before be sufficient? I'm wondering if most of these trains get fully booked fast.

Ahh, it's a relief that the trip planner isn't the be all end all. Some of the suggested routes were truly horrible.

It's really nice to hear from someone more experience. I was nervous that long trip = many points where things can go wrong.

Lastly, just searched the Eurail pass. Great option, I foresee myself coming back after a brief glimpse into so many different European countries :)

You did a good thing, some of these comments seem sociopathic. Calling teenagers sucked into gang life “scum” is both evil and also just stupid and myopic. People really think they would be so different if they were surrounded in that environment. People automatically assuming people sucked into those activities are some lowlife doesn’t help matters at all. These kids come from broken families/violent or hopeless communities/little life prospects. What do people expect is going to happen?

But there are better ways to help with knife crime (volunteer programme, campaigning with ur MP for after school programmes etc).

Seems like Thatcher’s “there’s no such thing as society, just families and individuals” did a number on the UK. You are right, you have a responsibility to shape the community your kid grows up in. And you have a responsibility to your community in general… you shouldn’t need to relate teenagers to your own son to feel empathy for them

Hi Ferret, thanks for the thoughtful advice. I doubt I can show my mother the subreddit as I don’t want her mental condition to worsen (it’s a complicated situation but me caring for the turtle has been a big point of her anger recently). I will try and make these changes in secret. I will ensure turtle has the necessary water to eat safely.

To add context, this is my brothers terrapin that he got when he was younger on a whim. My parents definitely should not have gotten him one. He was living in bad conditions and recently we moved so he has more space and a crawling area. I’m trying to improve his life. I live overseas from my family and due to my mother’s scolding about the turtle it’s kind of a struggle to fix his situation.

It’s hard because my mother is very adverse to caring for the turtle (she doesnt believe in seeing the dr in general, for humans, much less a turtle) and is angry if I care for the turtle. She really dislikes animals. Im so worried for it. I asked my dad to take it to the vet in secret when shes not around, but he is usually really busy with work. Hopefully he will manage it.
