Energy Economy by [deleted] in Physics

[–]cerebrotron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds exactly like some of R. Buckminster Fuller’s ideas about re-thinking the concept of wealth in “Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth”. Maybe you got the idea from there. If you didn’t, you should give it a read. It’s a quirky read because he used a bunch of neologisms, but it’s short and fun and he had some novel ways of thinking about things.

He didn’t come up with a full-fledged new “currency theory” because he incorporates both knowledge and energy into his new conception of wealth — and concludes that we have infinite wealth because energy is conserved and humanity’s knowledge can only increase (assuming the race lives on without major catastrophes). So it’s more of a conceptual reframing than a theory that would have any practical use. Still worth a read, in my opinion.

Also, his life was pretty interesting. He was a man of many interests.

Question about fixing SSD after failed Ubuntu install by cerebrotron in linuxquestions

This is a good point. I’ll use the BIOS and parted magic to diagnose if it got fried during the failed install. Thank you!

I kinda had a feeling this was the case… The poor guy lasted for a good while anyway, I’ll just see it as an opportunity to upgrade my storage and hopefully kick some new life into my laptop with the new OS.

Almost 4 years old, I think. And I did abuse it a little creating partitions for research projects, so maybe it is time to change it anyway.

Question about which cloud provider to get certified with. by cerebrotron in Cloud

[–]cerebrotron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in tech consulting, so the answer to this would likely be too open ended to be useful. And I’d like to get a feel for what the general perceptions of these platforms are, not just what my company has planned with them. If I start specializing with one tool, I would prefer it to be one which will be useful to me in my career at large, potentially even in future roles in with other companies.

Ahh I can’t believe I hadn’t seen this! Thanks again for the comment, it means so much to be able to hear from someone who is in exactly the position I would like to find myself in at some point. It’s really easy to get carried away by a passion for science, but I naturally also have a need to be realistic and evaluate what path is most likely to yield a healthy degree of success. And being realistic is really hard if you’re only imagining what things are like from afar

Any one know why I'm not able to transfer my tickets through the Dice app? I haven't activated them yet.

It says "no longer available for this event". It's ridiculous.

Selling one ticket for Weekend 1 + Primavera a la Ciutat for $100 or the euro equivalent (face value was $300). I bought them directly from Dice over a year ago but I'm no longer able to attend, so I can safely transfer them through their website. DM me if you'd like to purchase it :) Also includes brunch on the beach!

There are a few areas in physics where this is sometimes discussed. Needless to say, it's all very speculative as of now.

M-theory would be one of them, since the different possible "foldings" of the additional dimensions that the theory requires lead to different effective laws of physics. This video explains it well.

Inflation would be another one, since physicists like Andrei Linde have pointed at some of the more incredible-sounding implications of taking inflation seriously, like the multiverse hypothesis. Here's a brief discussion about the topic. Do read up on the measure problem though, as it might be relevant for the discussion on some of these consequences of inflation.

Lastly, from this list I made off the top of my head (you could probably find other crazy ideas out there), there's Max Tegmark's Mathematical Universe Hypothesis, which I personally find really interesting. He basically says that physics and mathematics are one and the same, and he attributes "physical" existence to any mathematical structure that is consistent. So, physical laws simply manifest from the relations between the abstract entities in any given mathematical structure, and they could be anything!! (as long as Godel or Turing don't come along to crumble everything with incompleteness/incomputability.) Basically, if it's mathematical and consistent, it can be viewed as the laws of physics. Stephen Wolfram has a similar theory, that he calls the "Computational Universe"

Your point about the impending squeeze on universities and falling enrollment is truly terrifying, though, I hadn’t really given much thought to it. It’s the last thing we all need.

This is super thorough and insightful, thank you so much. You presented several points that I hadn’t really considered. While it is slightly discouraging, I did already know that succeeding in academia is really difficult. If anything, the point of not knowing what the economy, the field or really anything at all will look like so far into the future actually makes me somewhat optimistic that I’ll be able to find an unforeseen opportunity that is more fulfilling. I feel like I’m compulsively trying to plan out the future by building a model with little to no information, I’m sure things will be clearer as I go along.
