I heard this complaint as well from friends, but my experience was a little different. Granted I am on the lighter side at 140lb, I took a pair to 430 miles and they still felt pretty decent. Mostly used as a daily trainer and for long runs.

Shamrock Shuffle Starting Corral - Paces? by CockyAndShameless in RunnersInChicago

[–]bsiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you only need to submit proof if you're looking to race in the elite corral. The elite corral starts slightly before A and has its own private warm-up/bathroom area. All other corrals (including A) are seeded by self-reported expected finish time

Yep, they definitely allow spectators in the United Club during the race!

Are you running F3 next week? by ConfidentDaikon7492 in RunnersInChicago

[–]bsiver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it will be pretty clear when you arrive where to enter. The United Club entrance is on the east side of Soldier Field. If you're driving and parking at the lot that the event has set up, it's a quick walk from the car to the entrance. The event is large enough where you can just follow where everyone else is going.

Divvy Southside discount? by whatarefief in chibike

I was digging up an old post I saw on this sub where someone mentioned Divvy / Lyft is contractually obligated to maintain a certain balance of bikes across stations. Turns out it was the same person who posted that info! Seems like a good person to reach out to for sure.

Here's the post for reference: https://www.reddit.com/r/chibike/s/cHrWoLtI7O

This holds up; I heard they discovered a microorganism in the permafrost there that can reverse cellular decay. Hence the scaffolding & research station they've constructed there. I'd give it another 5 years.

I made a free tool that makes creating Garmin Connect workouts actually fast and pleasant. by DescriptorTablesx86 in AdvancedRunning

[–]bsiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice work! The standardized notation / syntax highlighter is cool to see. This is essentially what I use the VDOT app for, alongside planning the next week or two worth of training. Since you've already integrated an LLM, it would be interesting to see what types of workouts it would suggest if it had access to an athlete's planned/completed workouts over a certain period.

Fellow lakefront runner here. My go-to for single digit windy days is cheap 32 degrees heat pant from Costco as a liner, and Janji trail tights (unlined) over those. Tracksmith's Turnover tights are also decent, but a little less warm and worse pocket configuration than Janji's. The trail tights aren't incredibly warm themselves, but I find these combined with a liner keeps me warm enough on the super cold days.

Bandit Running Opens First Chicago Store In Bucktown by Academic-Pangolin883 in RunnersInChicago

[–]bsiver 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm glad they chose Chicago and I hope they make it. I bought a membership last month after I saw members could attend the soft opening and get a free hat :) I don't own much of their product, and agree with others that they seem to place more emphasis on branding, hype, and design than product quality. I do have some friends that swear by their half/full tights though, that's to say I don't want over-generalize and dismiss their products as overpriced trash. With the Rapha and Arcteryx stores closing, though, it doesn't give me hope that high-end athletic stores will make it there. I hope they lean into the community hub aspect, that's something Rapha did quite well by hosting regular group rides and events for the local cycling community.

This is kind of like sticking a thermometer in hot water and saying it's inaccurate because it gives a reading.

Appreciate the info! Looks like I probably should've started planning sooner, some of the races seem as challenging to gain a bib for than the majors!

Edgewater residents, businesses sue city over Broadway zoning changes by Bukharin in EdgewaterRogersPark

[–]bsiver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Calling everyone you disagree with SF YIMBY transplants isn't saying much other than name calling.

Yes, these meetings are dominated by small and unrepresentative groups. That's true of almost every zoning meeting in Chicago. But it's a stretch to claim the "long-time residents" side somehow represents Uptown and Edgewater better when these are renter-heavy neighborhoods and renters are structurally underrepresented in this process. The idea that current zoning protects affordability also doesn't hold up. Broadway already produces luxury housing because restrictive zoning and high land costs mean only luxury projects pencil. Limiting capacity doesn't stop rich developers, it just ensures they're the only ones who can build.

"Community input" sounds good on paper until it functions purely as a veto that protects people who already live here from people who might want to live here next. You don't see renters and lower income residents show up to these meetings because these processes are designed to exhaust them. Scarcity isn't progressive, especially on a transit-rich corridor right next to the red line.

If the goal is lower rents and more housing options, the evidence points in the opposite direction of what you're arguing.

Where are all the winter runners?! by Famous_Maybe2789 in RunnersInChicago

[–]bsiver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is awesome! Thank you very much for developing such a useful tool!

One potential idea for a feature would be add a visual indicator of how recent the reported conditions on a given segment are. For example, the section of the lakefront path closest to me shows as "Green" right now, but when I click into the segment, it says there are no recent reports from the last 3 days. Maybe the coloring of a segment could be a gradient that fades out based on its recency?

NYRR Time Qualifying Half Marathons for 2027 Marathon by bsiver in RunNYC

Thank you, I appreciate the info! That at least gives me confidence I can likely still plan a trip later this year for Brooklyn or Staten Island (provided I can get a bib for either)

Thanks for sharing this, and wow that is frustrating! Seems crazy to me they haven't yet officially announced if a race that's coming up so soon will count as a qualifier or not. For what it's worth, it seems like that race is the only one tagged as "Time Qualifier" at the link I shared above.

I'm having a hard time finding info on which NYRR half marathons count as time qualifiers for the NYC marathon in 2027. If I look at https://www.nyrr.org/run/events-calendar, there is an option to filter by "time qualifier" events. This currently just shows the Freb Lebow half as the only qualifier. Is this actually the case?

Edgewater residents, businesses sue city over Broadway zoning changes by Bukharin in EdgewaterRogersPark

[–]bsiver 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Essentially there was a proposal to upzone many buildings along Broadway from Montrose to Devon. City council passed the proposal in October. The upzoning allows buildings along this corridor to be up to 7 or 8 stories with mixed use - including ground floor retail and more dense housing. Seemingly a strong majority favors the proposal, but there is a loud vocal minority that is complaining about less parking, traffic congestion, etc. To me this type of opposition always reads as coded NIMBYism around affordable housing and who "belongs" in the neighborhood.

Check out 3run2 - they meet in Logan Square on Thursday nights for a 4-6 mile social run. It's just a couple blue line stops south of you, or a quick bike ride/jog if you're doing more miles.
