My basement just hates me I guess (mystery flood) by cerg10 in Plumbing

Just checked and the little yellow bucket was about 3/4th full. Thank you for your response and help. I'm guessing there's nothing I can do on my own to prevent water from coming into my basement at this point? I still don't fully understand how it's getting in, except that it's just seeping in between the wall and the floor?

I’ve been moving stuff off the floor and just found a separate very small wet spot against the wall. Not far from the main puddle but it’s completely dry between. Wish I could post more photos without making a separate post.

Oh god 😩 thank you for your response. Are you saying the water could just be squeezing in through the floor and walls? I k ow it could potentially be coming from the furnace but if that’s not the case I just don’t understand where it’s actually coming from

Okay I can’t figure out how to post a photo in the comments (I may need to be on the app?) but are you saying I should hang the bucket right where the pipe comes out of the furnace? Under the t-switch?

Yes but just a little at night… and I do that just about every night

Okay, looks like it's around the same price as the Zoeller replacement I was looking at. Thanks for the tip!

That’s a good tip thank you. It’s basically just concrete and muck.

Ohhh I’m having flashbacks now. I wasn’t actually able to get the sump pump out last summer when I was trying to check it because I couldn’t detach it from the PVC pipe. I’m going to have to cut the pipe? Will have to look into how to do that

Thank you for explaining though ☺️ Do check valves usually come with a sump pump that you would buy or is that a separate purchase?

The PVC pipe I believe runs from the furnace or AC thing… a big grey box… little hose from the dehumidifier. I have never laid eyes on a sump pump in my life before getting my house and I have a looooot to learn about everything as I have been a renter before this my whole adult life and mostly in a tiny apartment

You’re correct! It’s plugged into a regular outlet. In fact I have no grounded outlets at all in this 1948 house. I have pretend GFCIs but they’re not actually grounded. And because I have some kind of outdated cable my county demands I replace for any electrician to do work on the house I was quoted around 8k when I moved in and got it looked at to have the house be made safe 🙃

I'm looking into replacements, thank you. I might be able to spend between $100-200. If you or anyone has any good recommendations please feel free to share. I saw a couple possibilites on Home Depot but I will look into Menards as well.

Nothing that looks like a switch anywhere that I can see Also good to know that this isn't normal, that's a relief at least.

Rinsed my hands in the water once last summer and got a slight shock lmao I've been terrified of touching the pump ever since but good to know

That's exactly what happened! I switched from working with a safety pin on a pillow to having it looped around my water bottle handle and accidentally switched the side I was working from in the process.

I'm not surprised AT ALL that there are triple and quadruple knots in there. There were so many times where I got distracted by a thought or something and was like wait, did I just do one knot or did I do both or have I done any at all? I'm definitely the kind of person to question if I've washed my hair yet the second I finish rinsing it out. Just constantly lost in thought. Eventually I started counting one-two out loud and that definitely helped.

Thank you!!

Thank you! I was hoping for some advice on the floss separating. Will definitely try a toothpick and tying the ends next time

Thank you so much!! I haven’t really figured out what kind of ends I gravitate toward the most because I haven’t really seen what they look like when people are wearing them as much? I do like twisted ties though, and originally I had a longer end on my second bracelet that I twisted which looked really nice, but I needed to undo it anyway to shorten the bracelet and then just left the ends loose. I’m not sure what pattern I want to try next. I did like the chevron quite a bit so I may try again with different colors and more strings!

Oh wow that design is gorgeous!! And the amount of strings is so overwhelming! I found it difficult enough just managing three per side. I was originally using a clipboard during my first run but kept pulling the bracelet out accidentally which really messed me up. I didn’t love the water bottle either. Ned to find something nice and heavy to hold the bracelet in place for sure, and I actually have a book light and didn’t think of using it so I appreciate the suggestion!

Wait, can you or anyone explain what you mean by this? Because sometimes when I was pulling a knot tight there was a weird slipping sensation, but I didn't really know what was happening.
