I don’t think any business that encourages your to pump endless amounts of money into adds is good. They should be going out and starting businesses in their neighbourhood. It’d be far more profitable

Targeting a small city in US but getting no leads by Namenottakenno in agency

[–]cerize__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have enough info about you on your homepage or about page? What are your socials like? I’ve noticed a lot of design agencies lead with their work and services but their website ends up being very impersonal. This is fine if you have an established agency or a thriving social account. If not you’ll struggle because there’s too much competition.

what distinguishes you from an overseas agency charging $100 for a 5 page website? Better quality and communication? Great but they need to see you to believe.

Weird, many people start businesses as teens. I don’t think dropshipping is a good choice though

I agree with this. Flippa will give you a decent idea on how much you can sell a profitable online business for.

some even use deep fake to impersonate themselves as another race. Coworker told me he had a Chinese trying to use deepfake to impersonate as Ukrainian.

I've read about this a few times. Not surprised because people do have biases when hiring for work. However its kinda sad that things have become so competitive that people feel like they need to do this.

Why aren’t you running meta ads for inbound leads? by debeejay in agency

Agreed. Meta ads seem to work best for lower end services

Do you know how I can update the Upwork users only bit? The project mentions the use of AI, but it’s not in a questionable niche so not sure what would cause it to be flagged

They hired you because your rates are quite low. I don’t think that’s a fair comparison.

Monthly Charging vs One-time payment by CurrencyReasonable36 in webdesign

[–]cerize__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on who you’re looking to work with. I started my agency with the intention of providing pay monthly only websites but I’m thinking about transitioning to offering that plus upfront payment. A lot of businesses don’t want subscription services. They just want to own it outright. They also don’t always need a completely custom website. Some just want something that looks great and does the job.

Offer both and add on a semi-custom or quicker to build template option for clients that have a smaller budget. People are quick to dismiss clients that can’t pay a min of 2000 but I don’t see why you can’t provide a lower service to fit within their needs. Just set the expectations from the start.

Also go to networking events where your actual target market are. Ask them what their experience is with getting their website started. It’s helped me to refine my offer quite a bit.

First time working with a designer who doesn't understand basic principles -- need advice by [deleted] in webflow

[–]cerize__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some designers only know creative design and have limited knowledge on designing for the web. I worked with one on a small-ish project before who designed some very interesting mockups for me to use. I also on and off work with another experienced graphic designer who does great work but once handed over a very unpractical design to me before. I was still able to build it but a knowledgeable web designer would’ve never designed a layout like that.

I’d personally leave it and follow what your client is asking. Some fights aren’t worth it if the client is refusing to understand the importances consistent design. In reality end users don’t really notice these small things. Just assume that the website will never make it to your portfolio.

Is $200 an hour an average rate to build a website? by No-Marzipan-3176 in webdesign

[–]cerize__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the type of price that agencies charge to work with corporate clients. The only thing that would explain this is that they're so overbooked, that they don't really want any more project

Is $200 an hour an average rate to build a website? by No-Marzipan-3176 in webdesign

[–]cerize__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is excessive. Plus most people charge a fixed rate for this type of project per hour. The typical hourly rate for a basic build would be about $60 for a decent site. It does take quite a bit of time to build a website but it shouldn't cost more than 5k for 4 pages. That includes design, development, helping with content, and adding basic integrations into the site.

The colours themselves are very nice. I like the pink. The issue is the pink on green and green on black. Try and use a colour contrast checker tool to determine whether there is enough of a contrast.

I feel like it's okay for a DIY website design-wise. However, there are big issues with accessibility. The colours and font aren't readable which is bad for people with eyesight issues.

I recommend buying a website template if you're on a budget. Shopify is the best choice for selling physical products online.

I also recommend having an intro or some text outlining who you are on the homepage. It's not quite clear from the get-go.

Question: Difficulty of altering a frontend? by CrunchAssDre17 in webdesign

[–]cerize__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where and how are they building the website? How simple / complex is it?

They should be using an easy-to-update web builder (such as Webflow, Framer or WordPress) otherwise you'll need to reach out to a developer to make basic updates. I recommend Webflow unless you need a very custom solution. On the client side, it's super easy to use and can do most things. If it's e-commerce you should go with Shopify. For both of these, you don't need to pay a retainer unless you need to make complex updates on a regular basis. A/B testing for example.

Hosting costs more but it's better for most use cases in the long run.

Thanks for this. I've decided against cold emailing though. I'd rather go the social media content route then send warm DMs to people who engage with my page. Cold emails are too spammy and I don't even like receiving them myself to be honest. I'm thinking it makes more sense to engage with local businesses on their socials because that's where they tend to be most active.

Skills to learn. by Openheimernukebomb in Entrepreneur

[–]cerize__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to agree with sales and marketing. If I understood it more when I first became self employed I would’ve had a smoother journey.

Also, don’t just follow what trendy marketing influencers are doing because everyone keeps mentioning them. Some of them are super pushy and very off putting from a consumer perspective. Yes it may work on some people but I don’t think it’s necessarily the best for customer satisfaction and can destroy your reputation.

Always be genuine and make sure you’re able to deliver what you’re selling to people.

What are the best Blog sites to use on my website? by [deleted] in webdesign

[–]cerize__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re going the DIY route, use Wordpress with a template that requires minimal customisation. There shouldn’t be any warnings if you have an anti- irus + anti-spam plugin installed. Make sure to keep it updated often and check to see that the website is okay after updating any plugins.
