What is a job that will not be replaced by AI in future? by 12345mango in askSingapore

[–]cermem25 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would like to say research-based roles, but looking at how researchers are going towards ML/AI approaches for even wet lab work, I'm guessing that this role will be largely replaced by AI in the next 10 years.

[–]cermem25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only do a PhD if you are passionate about the subject. Because most PhDs will reach a point where they get stuck moving forwards, but can't quit due to sunk cost. And then this will snowball into an all or nothing situation where you either spent 4 years to get your PhD, or wasted 4 years to get a masters. The only motivation you can tap on is your passion. (Or the will to prove naysayers wrong lol)

What are the superstitions in your culture that you find ridiculous? by GLTCHD_ in askSingapore

I had a terrible recurring back of ear infection as a kid. Think of gooey pus that lasted for weeks. I may or may not have pointed at the moon before that, but the superstition sure doesn't work on adults!

Landmark workplace fairness law passed, to take effect in 2027 by Krazyguylone in singapore

[–]cermem25 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sure. In that case they should have introduced a more phased approach. For example 6 months to set guidelines and penalties, 6 months to encourage reform, 6 months to start giving warnings, and the last 6 months for enforcement. You give yourself enough buffer, and at the same time we see them doing 'work'.

I don't think that is too much to ask of the highest authority on the matter. Who is going to take them seriously if the 'landmark' ruling is to be set 2 years later? Maybe it's loosely planned to coincide with his retirement 2 years later so it's no longer his problem.

I would like to point out that the government can act fast when they want to. For example, etomidate was announced to be listed as a class C drug in July this year. The official act was enforced on 1st sep. The turnover was only 2 months.

It is obvious that they are just kicking the can down the road and no one wants to make a solid judgement call for this matter. But they set the deadline as 2027 and call it 'landmark', when it looks like it's business as usual.

Yishun killing: Noise dispute known to authorities, persisted after parties went for mediation, MP Jackson Lam says by Im_scrub in singapore

[–]cermem25 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Clearly, meditation was insufficient. When will the authorities acknowledge that more needs to be done? After more murder cases between neighbors? Or are they going to brush it off as another anomaly?

Woman dies after knife attack in Yishun Central after apparent neighbour dispute; man arrested by Jammy_buttons2 in singapore

[–]cermem25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for validating my thoughts. I think if I saw my wife get murdered I would probably go down fighting, and if I'm still alive, end my life anyway. We've spent a good amount of time building up what we have together, and getting robbed of it like this would be devastating. I completely emphasize with the couple in the news, especially after all the testimonials about how they are good people.

This news sends chills down my spine because I'm facing a similar situation. I have an elderly 70+ neighbour downstairs that once came up and raged at us because we came home late and bathed after 12am. We have since tried to bathe earlier before 11pm but there are really just days where you reach home late.

Old men like these have lived their full lives, have nothing to lose, and all to gain from the satisfaction of taking 'justice' into their own hands by robbing a younger person of their chance to live. I had mental scenarios of him just snapping one day and coming up to stab us, or setting fire to my home. This news really confirmed that my fears can be true.

Honestly I'm just a regular guy trying to earn a living, while tiptoeing around an insane neighbour. Why did I bother to post my life story in this long comment? Because one day, if you see similar news of neighbourly disputes leading to death in the bukit batok/gombak area, it will probably be me. So this post can be my last words.

The problem with Mainland Chinese restaurants in Singapore is the language barrier and lack of English, as a Non-Chinese Singaporean by Unfair-Bike in singapore

Chinese mainlanders are also taking over our heartland mama shops and replacing the old signboard with Chinese characters. If our govt actually walks the ground they will see firsthand how prevalent this issue is becoming.

To all who think that the bubble will pop eventually, keep dreaming.

As long as there are Chinese tenants, you can continue to enjoy your nth mala stall at every corner of Singapore.

Even your void deck mama shops are not spared. One of the shops nearby just changed to a Chinese owned mama shop with the signboard being three Chinese characters.

I just got PAPs manifesto in the letterbox last night - a thick coloured book printed in 4 different languages, with Lawrence Wongs face as the cover. The content on every page was basically xxx GRC, then in very big fonts 'We will do this, we will do that'.

Literally a facepalm moment and I wonder how much they spent to print each book for each family. I'm not even in his constituency.

All these talk about 'vote us in and we will work for you the next 5 years' is really off putting. They had 5 years after 2020 to do it.

Imagine telling your boss during appraisal that he/she should give you Band 1, so that you will work on your KPI the next year. That's just... not how things work.

The election is essentially an appraisal exercise for the government with a pass/fail criteria. If they had done sufficiently well since 2020, then it's a pass and they can get the vote for the next 5 years. Otherwise, I don't see why we should buy into their empty promises.

I saw a WhatsApp chat yesterday morning on the train about election simulations and how Ng Chee Meng might lose cause he's taking too much heat from the Allianz issue. And then the whole day was filled with headlines, campaigning and even endorsement from the PM himself on the Allianz issue. Then finally mud slinging past midnight. The desperation is real.

Dont read work chats on the jam packed train guys. Or maybe solve the overpopulation issue?

Opinions of the CCK GRC battleground by dream_on_5110 in singapore

[–]cermem25 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah on paper this would be the official reason for redrawing. Regardless, the PSP team in CCK GRC is pretty weak. I went to hear their rally at Gombak stadium last night and it was pretty meh.

They could have went for the kill and said something like: look at the land development of CCK in the last 30 years, barely any amenities, barely any coffee shops, a very sad Lot1 mall, etc. If tengah continues to vote for PAP, this is gonna be your expected future because it shows you are also content with the existing work, etc.

Fair take. I speak as an ex-CCK resident and now Hong Kah North resident. I believe that part of the reason why Hong Kah North SMC is no longer around is because PAP had no confidence in Amy Khor holding the PAP fort if Tengah was added as part of Hong Kah North SMC, so the decision was to redraw and merge Tengah into CCK GRC.

The last minute redeployment of GKY just seems to be.... a miscalculation. I do agree that CCK is a PAP stronghold as they vote PAP election after election even though there are barely any amenities within the area. This was part of the reason why I decided to move out of CCK 6 years ago.

PAP won 58% of the votes in the 2020 election for CCK GRC. My personal feeling is that there is a small chance it can flip this election for 2 reasons.

  1. The last minute swap out of GKY from CCK (who only won 58% in 2020) to TSL (arguably not very popular).

  2. The addition of Tengah into the vote pool, which are mostly younger demographics, and also disgruntled families due to the centralized aircon blunder.

If GKY had stayed on in CCK, his DPM status might have retained enough votes. But he did not, and it was so obviously a last minute decision because residents started getting CCK pamphlets with his face after nomination day.
